Camera-ready final papers due: April 9, 2004
OVERVIEW
MobiSys 2004 seeks to present innovative, significant research
in the area of mobile systems. This will be a 2.5-day conference,
featuring refereed paper presentations, tutorials, demos, videos,
and poster sessions. This conference builds on the success of
the first MobiSys conference held in San Francisco,
http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2003/, which featured 23 high
caliber research papers and many interesting posters and
demonstrations. The conference particularly values the practical
experience gained from designing, building and using mobile systems,
applications, and services.
TOPICS
The conference addresses broad systems issues in mobile computing.
Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Design, implementation, and evaluation of mobile systems
* Middleware and service architectures for mobile applications
* Data management for mobile applications
* Disconnected and weakly connected operation
* Proxies and data adaptation
* Mobile agents
* Operating systems for small devices
* Infrastructure support for mobility
* Security, privacy, authorization, and billing
* System-level energy management for mobile devices
* Wearable and handheld devices in the context of system design
* Personal mobility
* Personal-area networks and systems
* Resource discovery of mobile services
* Systems for location awareness and determination
* Application interfaces and services supporting the mobile user
* Systems support for mobile robots
* Experience with mobile systems
The ideal MobiSys submission should present novel research that
has resulted in the implementation or evaluation of running systems.
Papers that describe the design of and experience with mobile system
architectures are favored over those narrowly focused on low-level
components such as the device hardware or the routing, link, or
physical network layers. Please feel free to contact the Program
Chairs at mobisys_pcchairs(a)acm.org to determine appropriateness.
An award will be given at the conference for the best paper.
WHAT TO SUBMIT
Submissions should be full papers, 12?14 single-spaced 8.5" × 11"
pages, including figures, tables, and references, two-column format,
using 10-point type on 12-point (single-spaced) leading. Submissions
will be judged on originality, significance, interest, clarity,
relevance, and correctness. Accepted papers may be shepherded
through an editorial review process by a member of the program committee.
MobiSys, like most conferences and journals, requires that papers must
not be submitted simultaneously to any other conference or publication,
that submissions must not be previously published, and that accepted
papers must not be subsequently published elsewhere. Papers
accompanied by non-disclosure agreement forms are not acceptable
and will be returned to the author(s) unread. All submissions will
be held in the highest confidentiality prior to publication in the
Proceedings, both as a matter of policy and in accord with the
U.S. Copyright Act of 1976.
HOW TO SUBMIT
Authors are required to submit a title and abstract on October 31, 2003
(by midnight PST). Full papers are due November 7, 2003 (midnight PST).
All submissions to MobiSys 2004 must be electronic, in PDF format.
Detailed submission instructions are posted on the conference web
site: http://www.sigmobile.org/mobisys/2004/.
POSTER, DEMO, AND VIDEO SESSIONS
Do you have interesting work you would like to share, or a cool idea
that is not ready to be published? Poster sessions are for you!
Poster sessions, scheduled during the technical sessions, introduce
new or ongoing work. Demos and videos of working systems and
applications are also encouraged. The MobiSys audience will provide
valuable discussion and feedback. We are particularly interested in
presentations of student work. To submit a poster, demo, or video,
please consult the conference web site for instructions. Proposals
should be received by March 5, 2004.

Special Issue of the Journal of Computer Communications
on Sensor Networks
Guest Editors:
Guoliang Xue (Arizona State University, USA)
Hossam Hassanein (Queens University, Canada)
PUBLICATION: Fall 2004
Recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems technology and wireless
communications have enabled the development of low-cost low-power sensors.
These tiny sensor nodes, which can perform sensing, simple computation, and
communication in short distances, leverage the idea of sensor networks in
which the number of nodes can be a few orders of magnitude higher than the
number of nodes in a traditional ad hoc network. Applications of sensor
networks include military applications, environmental applications, health
applications, home applications, and many other commercial applications.
This special issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions describing
recent advances in all areas of sensor networks. Papers should describe
original and previously unpublished, and not currently under review by
another conference, workshop or journal. Topics of interest include, but are
not limited to:
* Architectures and protocols
* Applications
* Energy management
* Low-energy energy routing, including multicasting and broadcasting
* Survivable routing
* Data gathering
* Data fusion
* Positioning and tracking techniques
* Reachability
* Reliability and fault tolerance
* Management protocols
* Query and data dissemination
* Network security
* Performance evaluation
* Scalability
* Self-organization
* Operating system for sensor networks

Wireless access technology has created a new dimension for user access
over the past few years. This has opened up a number of issues, one of
which is QoS. The rapid adoption of wireless and IP based applications
has created a strong driving force towards ubiquitous data services. A
common understanding of the next generation of wireless systems that
will offer such services is that they will involve multiple technologies
and concepts that are still evolving. A major challenge in this
heterogeneous environment is to provide proper QoS for mobile and
stationary users using both customized and access agnostic applications
and the need to analyze latency as a function of traffic profiles. The
goal of this Special Issue is to collect high-quality scientific
contributions discussing QoS strategies and tradeoffs at the Physical,
Data Link, Network and Transport layers, for both already deployed as
well as innovative/emerging wireless technologies. Papers reporting
original, unpublished results on following topics are solicited:
- Service differentiation and current enhancements in wireless
LANs.
- QoS management and capacity optimization in multi-access,
multi-service networks.
- Resource management for QoS-sensitive services.
- Local versus end-to-end QoS provisioning, including QoS
issues in mixed cellular/WLAN environment.
- Software implementation and its robustness for QoS in
wireless networks.
- Performance models for multi-class wireless networks with
emphasis on latency, throughput and goodput for various offered traffic
profiles.
- Architectures and Protocols for QoS provisioning in
multi-access multi-service networks

IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine Special Issue on
Applications and Services for the B3G/4G era
The path towards 4G networks incorporates a number of critical trends.
Operators have already made huge investments in 2G, 2G+ and 3G
technologies. Moreover, future wireless infrastructures will have to
compete with multiple successfully deployed wired and wireless
communications' systems. Thus, the 4G era has to provide really
break-through technologies in order to persuade for its necessity.
Innovations in air interface technology, enhancements in signalling and
transport protocols, end-to-end QoS, worldwide seamless mobility of
terminals and personal bubbles will lead to next generation wireless
networks. Research on all these areas has been initiated, and it is
expected to provide impressive results in a couple of years.
Besides the system and network infrastructure advances, innovative steps
are also required in the applications and services domain. Evolution
towards 4G is expected to be similar to what happened to the Internet:
from a limited application environment to an integral part of average
person's life. Wireless services will shift from voice to packet data and
users will become more accustomed to conducting wireless business and
financial transactions. Many future wireless applications have already
been considered. Mobile Internet, mobile multiparty videoconference,
mobile office, mobile VPNs, mobile tele-presence, mobile e-commerce, etc.
are among the foreseen future applications, but none has already convinced
that it is the "killer" one.
This special issue of IEEE Wireless Communications aims to describe the
future service creation, execution and provisioning environments,
frameworks and platforms, trends in the direction towards new added value
applications and services, applications and services that will
enable new business models and new ways of working anywhere, anytime and
in any context,
and share this vision with the magazines' audience.
In more details, this special issue seeks unpublished papers in that
tackle the following areas:
· Applications and services for mobile users and professionals
· Interoperable mobile/ wireless technologies and convergence of fixed
and mobile communication infrastructures.
· Open, context and location aware middleware for heterogeneous mobile
networks
· Service creation environments for B3G/4G mobile/wireless systems
· Innovative, adaptive and self-configuring mobile and wireless applications
· Adaptive, polymorphic and reconfigurable systems for mobile environments
· Applications for mobile PANs
· End-to-end QoS issues for heterogeneous mobile networks
· Security and privacy of mobile/wireless systems
· Power management and control algorithms
