CALL FOR PAPERS
------------------------------------------------------------
PERVASIVE INFORMATION MANAGEMENT
International Workshop held in conjunction with EDBT 2004
March 18, 2004, Heraklion - Crete, Greece
http://www.dbs.ethz.ch/~tuerker/edbtpim/
------------------------------------------------------------
Wireless connectivity along with increasingly small and
powerful mobile devices and sensors enables a wide
range of new applications that will radically change the
way information is managed and processed today.
Information becomes ubiquitous, highly distributed and
at the same time accessible from everywhere at any time.
Information access takes place in highly dynamic and
instable networks. Nevertheless, users and application
developers will expect information processing to
continue under similar guarantees as those offered by
today's stationary and more or less centralized systems,
even if some nodes of the pervasive information network
are (temporarily) disconnected and/or are in motion.
Examples for these guarantees are the ones given by
database management systems, e.g., consistency and
durability of data. Additional challenges stem from the
fact that mobile devices, in particular embedded devices
and sensors, are less powerful than their stationary
counterparts; they are smaller (resulting, e.g., in smaller
in- and output devices and less available storage), have
restricted energy supplies and communicate via
expensive and unreliable wireless communication media.
This workshop aims to be a forum for presenting and
discussing ideas, challenges, and opportunities for data
management and data access technology in pervasive
information systems. New and existing concepts and
techniques shall be considered in the light of the rapidly
increasing mobility of users and the great advances in
system infrastructures, mobile devices, and sensor
technologies. Research papers presenting theoretical
results, perspective solutions, and practical
developments are welcome. Position papers are also
welcome and encouraged.

CALL FOR PAPERS
1st European Workshop on Security in Ad-Hoc and
Sensor Networks (ESAS 2004)
http://www.netlab.nec.de/esas/esas2004.html
EURESCOM, Heidelberg, Germany
5.-6. August, 2004
GENERAL INFORMATION
With more and more devices getting smart and interconnected, ad hoc and
sensor networks will open up a realm of new communication and data exchange
opportunities. These upcoming networks are characterized by their dynamic
structure, lack of a pre-established fixed infrastructure, and constrained
resources. In order to allow their successful deployment, various security
challenges must be met. Examples include missing `a priori' security
associations, no clear line of defense, the lack of a trusted infrastructure,
complex multiple domain relationships, as well as bandwidth, computing,
memory, and energy constraints.
Due to the pervasive nature of applications relying on ad-hoc and sensor
networks effective provisions for robust security solutions in a reliable and
power efficient way must be taken. This workshop seeks submissions presenting
novel research on all aspects of security and cryptography for ad-hoc and
sensor networks. ESAS 2004 will be a workshop where the cryptography, security
and wireless networking communities meet. Submission of papers based on work-
in-progress is encouraged.
The topics include but are not limited to:
* Cryptographic protocols
* Trust establishment, negotiation, and management
* Security in constrained environments
* Cooperation and fairness based protocols
* Key management
* Scalability evaluation of secure and reliable protocols
* Secure routing
* Secure hardware modules
* Implementations of secure protocols
* Deployment of secure protocols
* Privacy and anonymity
* Secure MAC protocols

======
The need for high computation power and advances in VLSI and communications
technology has led to the rapid development of cluster- and grid- super-
computers. Besides the technological advances, parallelism in all level of
computation (thread, instruction, task, and program) has been exploited in
such high performance network-based computing systems. Almost all of such
systems have their performance mainly dependent to the employed
interconnection networks for inter-node communication. Many factors affect
the efficiency and usabilityof such networks, including the topology, the
switching method, the routing mechanism, and the traffic load shape. This
special issue will cover various topics on networks in high performance
computing systems.
The topics of interest include (but are not limited to):
- Switching techniques
- Routing algorithms: unicast, multicast, broadcast, gossip,
fault-tolerant, ...
- Parallel and distributed algorithms and applications
- Resource placement, scheduling, and load balancing
- Topological properties, embedding, and VLSI layout of networks
- Novel network topologies
- Optical/Opto-electronic networks for high-performance system
- Mobile distributed systems
- Integrated design tool environments
- Innovative parallel simulation techniques and tools
- Mathematical performance modelling of network-based systems
- Performance analysis and evaluation
- Workload characterization and traffic modelling
- Performance-directed design of networks
- The impact of implementation technology on the design interconnection
networks
- Fault-tolerant architectures
- Networks in DSM systems
- Cache-memory support
- I/O Support
- Networks in SIMD and array processors
- Networks in pipelined and vector architectures

Special Issue of the Journal of Computer Communications
on Sensor Networks
Guest Editors:
Guoliang Xue (Arizona State University, USA)
Hossam Hassanein (Queens University, Canada)
PUBLICATION: Fall 2004
Recent advances in micro-electro-mechanical systems technology and wireless
communications have enabled the development of low-cost low-power sensors.
These tiny sensor nodes, which can perform sensing, simple computation, and
communication in short distances, leverage the idea of sensor networks in
which the number of nodes can be a few orders of magnitude higher than the
number of nodes in a traditional ad hoc network. Applications of sensor
networks include military applications, environmental applications, health
applications, home applications, and many other commercial applications.
This special issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions describing
recent advances in all areas of sensor networks. Papers should describe
original and previously unpublished, and not currently under review by
another conference, workshop or journal. Topics of interest include, but are
not limited to:
* Architectures and protocols
* Applications
* Energy management
* Low-energy energy routing, including multicasting and broadcasting
* Survivable routing
* Data gathering
* Data fusion
* Positioning and tracking techniques
* Reachability
* Reliability and fault tolerance
* Management protocols
* Query and data dissemination
* Network security
* Performance evaluation
* Scalability
* Self-organization
* Operating system for sensor networks

Call for Papers
===============
Cluster and Grid Systems (CGS) are becoming ubiquitous computing
infrastructure
for the coordinated use of shared resources in a distributed environment. The
key to making the CGS work well is the middleware technologies that can
efficiently allocate resources as well as manage the data, policies, securrity,
networks, and so forth. A tremendous effort has been made and is still underway
to provide and fine tune a number of middleware technologies allowing cluster
and grid users to access large resources in order to solve the most
challenging
computational problems. This sepcial session on Resource Management and
Scheduling Techniques for Cluster and Grid Computing Systems will serve as a
forum to present current and future work as well as to exchange research ideas
by researchers, developers, practitioners, and users in cluster and grid
computing. We are soliciting original high quality research papers on topics of
interest that include but are not limited to:
*Resource Management and Scheduling
*Data Access and Management
*Advance Resource Reservation and Scheduling
*Computational Economy Based Resource Management and Scheduling
*Policy and Security Management
*Performance Evaluation and Modeling
*Remote Data Access and Management
