Darüber hinaus ist aber die Fähigkeit zur semantischen Selbstorganisation notwendig, zur spontanen und automatischen Kooperation multimedialer Dienste und Geräte zur Erkennung und Erfüllung der Nutzerbedürfnisse. Die Entwicklung von hierfür geeigneten Software-Technologien ist Gegenstand aktueller Forschungs- und Entwicklungsaktivitäten. Ziel: Ziel dieses Workshops ist die Vorstellung und kritische Diskussion aktueller Lösungsansätze für selbstorganisierende Multimedia-Appliances vor dem Hintergrund der Einsetzbarkeit in der Praxis. Middleware is systems software that resides between the applications and the underlying operating systems, network protocol stacks, and hardware. Its primary role is to functionally bridge the gap between application programs and the lower-level hardware and software infrastructure in order to coordinate how application components are connected and how they interoperate. Furthermore, middleware enables and simplifies the integration of components developed by multiple technology suppliers. In this sense middleware systems are sets of services and abstractions that facilitate the development and deployment of distributed applications in heterogeneous, distributed, computing environments. Next-generation distributed applications and systems will increasingly be developed using middleware. This dependency poses hard challenges, including latency hiding, masking partial failures, information assurance and security, legacy integration, dynamic service partitioning and load balancing, and end-to-end quality of service specification and enforcement. To address these challenges, researchers and practitioners need to discover and validate techniques, patterns, and optimizations for middleware frameworks, multi-level distributed resource management, and adaptive and reflective middleware architectures. Following the success of past conferences in this series, the 5th International Middleware Conference will be the premier event for middleware research and technology in 2004. The scope of the conference is the design, implementation, deployment, and evaluation of distributed system platforms and architectures for future computing and communication environments. Highlights of the conference will include a high quality technical program, tutorials, invited speakers, poster presentations, and workshops. Information processing in sensor networks is an interdisciplinary research area, which spans the areas of signal processing/detection/estimation, networking and protocols, embedded systems, data bases and information management, as well as distributed algorithms. It opens up new research venues, which include sensor tasking and control, tracking and localization, probabilistic reasoning, sensor data fusion, distributed data bases, communication protocols and theory that address network coverage, connectivity, and capacity, as well as system/software architecture and design methodologies. Moreover, all these issues have to consider many cross-cutting requirements such as efficiency/cost tradeoff, robustness, self-organization, fault-tolerance, timeliness, scalability, and network longevity. Topics of Interest This special issue calls for articles that highlight technical issues from physical device design, signal processing, network protocols/algorithms, to revolutionary new applications enabled by sensor network technology. In particular, we are seeking contributions in all aspects of sensor networks. Of particular interests are (i) Articles that summarize the fundamental performance and behavior limits of sensor networks with respect to sensor network capacity, coverage, connectivity, and/or lifetime. As wireless sensor networks must operate under extreme resource constraints, an understanding of the fundamental performance limits of such networks will provide valuable insights into what designs make sense and can help identify areas in which theory promises performance much better than that attained by existing designs. (ii) Articles that outline algorithms which realize certain sensor network operation, such as localization, time synchronization and target tracking, and their theoretical base. Articles of this type should focus on comparing alternative algorithms/approaches with respect to the various sensor network requirements outlined above. (iii) Articles that deal with system implementations, experiments, and experiences in application domains. At an early stage of sensor network development, one can analyze and predict network behavior through simulation and theoretical reasoning. However, a true evaluation of system performance can only be obtained through implementation and direct measurement and experimentation of the prototype. Hence articles that report the system implementation issues with an emphasis on the cross-layer design tradeoffs will shed lights on how effective the overall system design is. These networks consist of battery-powered nodes that are endowed with a multitude of sensing modalities. The demand for these networks is spurred by numerous applications that require in-situ, unattended, high-precision, real-time observation over a vast area. Such networks are more than simply the next step in the evolution of the personal computer or the Internet. Instead, wireless sensor networks operate under a set of unique constraints and requirements that demand more than merely incremental improvements in, or modifications of, traditional technologies. In particular, although there have been significant improvements in processor design and computing, advances in battery technology still lag behind, making energy resource the ultimate bottleneck in wireless sensor networking. The purpose of this issue is to disseminate state-of-the-art approaches and novel techniques that will advance basic knowledge and understanding of wireless sensor networks. We are particularly interested in soliciting papers that study fundamental performance limits and tradeoffs that are brought about by energy constraints and that are unique to the wireless sensor networks. PAPERS: Authors are invited to submit full papers presenting new research related to the theory or practice of mobile computing and networking. All submissions must describe original research that is not published or currently under review by another conference or journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to: - Applications and computing services supporting mobile users - Architectures, protocols, and algorithms to cope with mobility, limited bandwidth, or intermittent connectivity - Database and data management issues in mobile computing - Operating system and middleware support for mobile computing and networking - Distributed systems aspects of mobile computing - New mobile and wireless applications - Integration and interworking of wired and wireless networks - Performance of mobile and wireless networks and systems - Location-dependent applications and protocols - Security and privacy of mobile/wireless systems - Mobile ad hoc and sensor networks - Wireless multimedia systems - Algorithms and protocols for power management and control - Service creation and management environments for mobile/wireless systems The program committee will referee all papers, and accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Selected papers will appear in a special issue of the ACM/Kluwer Wireless Networks (WINET) journal. CHALLENGES PAPERS: The conference also solicits short papers (maximum of 8 pages) that challenge the mobile computing community with revolutionary new approaches, new technologies, or visionary applications. Such papers should provide stimulating ideas or grand visions that may open up exciting avenues of far-reaching future research. Descriptions of new products or simple evolution of existing work are not appropriate as Challenges Papers. Challenges Papers will be reviewed and should be submitted using the normal submission procedure. The title of such papers must start with the word "Challenges," i.e., "Challenges: ... `rest of the title'." SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS: All paper submissions will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare a PDF or a PostScript version of their full paper. Papers must be no longer than 15 pages (8 pages for Challenges submissions), font size not smaller than 10 points, and must fit properly on U.S. "letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches) with reasonable margins. Detailed instructions for the paper submission procedure and format will be available on the conference web pages. The deadline for registering the title and the abstract of the paper with our electronic submission system is March 8, 2004 and the deadline for submitting the actual paper is March 15, 2004. All deadlines are 11:59PM EST. All submitted papers will be judged based on their quality through double-blind review process, where the identities of the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Authors should not be identifiable by any means from the paper or from the PDF or the Postscript file. Guidelines for preparing the paper for blind reviewing, as well as electronic paper submission instructions, will be available on the conference web pages. Submitted or substantially similar papers must not be currently under review for any other publication. Evaluation of tutorial proposals will be based on the expertise and experience of the instructors and on the relevance of the subject matter. Potential instructors are requested to submit a tutorial proposal of at most 5 pages, including a biographical sketch, to the Tutorial Co-Chairs, Andrew Campbell (campbell(a)ee.columbia.edu) and Taieb Znati (tznati(a)nsf.gov). The deadline for tutorial proposals is April 05, 2004. PANELS: Panel proposals are solicited that examine innovative, controversial, or otherwise provocative issues of interest. Panel proposals should not exceed 3 pages, including biographical sketches of the panelists. Potential panel organizers should contact the Panel Co-Chairs, Prathima Agrawal (pagrawal(a)eng.auburn.edu) and Tao Zhang (tao(a)research.telcordia.com). The deadline for panel proposals is April 26, 2004. RESEARCH DEMOS AND EXHIBITS: Proposals for research demos are solicited. Proposals should not exceed 3 pages and should include a description of the demo and equipment to be used. Send proposals to the Research Demo Chair, Elizabeth Belding-Royer (ebelding(a)cs.ucsb.edu). The deadline for demo proposals is July 12, 2004. We are also planning an Expo featuring exhibits of the latest mobile computing products and services. STUDENT POSTER SESSION: Student posters are solicited that present recent and on-going research by students on mobile computing and mobile and wireless networking topics. Student posters should not exceed 2 pages and should include a description of the student's research. See above for paper formatting requirements. Accepted posters will be put on the conference web page; however, they will not be printed in the conference proceedings. BEST STUDENT PAPER AWARD: Papers with a student as a primary author will be considered for the Best Student Paper Award, with a cash award of 1000 USD. Students must indicate with their submission that they would like to be considered for this award. The student author of the awarded paper is expected to present the paper at the conference.
