CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
INTELLIGENT SERVICES AND APPLICATIONS IN NEXT GENERATION NETWORKS
Next generation networks are expected to be very complex systems
interconnecting different technologies and architectures across various
software platforms. No single technology or architecture will be able to
smoothly glue together such complex systems into a single network of all
networks. DSL and Cable once dominating the access networks will be
challenged by new cheap alternatives such as optical ethernet, wireless
LANs, fixed wireless access systems such as LMDS, and even dark fiber.
Metro networks will also be dominated by an array of technologies from
multiple service protocol platforms (MSPP) to resilient packet rings (RPR)
to 10 GB-ethernet switches, and even OXC switching nodes. The backbone will
be superhighways utilizing DWDM, OXC nodes interconnecting Gigabit and
Terabit IP routers. 3G and beyond mobile networks will be a corner stone in
extending communications services to mobile users. New services and
applications will be supported on these complex systems through upper layer
middleware software platforms. These services will no longer be independent
static sources of content, rather will have intelligent software to adapt
those sources to varying networks conditions, technologies, and platforms.
This will be achieved through another intelligent layer of cognitive
middleware that is capable of interfacing these services to the underlying
network technologies. New services must be capable of receiving information
about the network and adaptively tune their transport parameters as well as
bit-rates according to the underlying networking conditions/technologies.
New services and contents will need to understand networking traffic
parameters, and react accordingly in order to maintain smooth traffic flows
in the network and avoid skewness behaviors.
The scope of this issue is to address the research and development efforts
of the aforementioned various issues in the area of intelligent services and
applications in next generation networks. In particular we are interested
in papers dealing with state-of-the-art design and analysis, implementation
and experimental results of cognitive and intelligent software
agents/services and applications as well as architectures for intelligent
content delivery. In this context, topics include:
· Cognitive middleware
· Cognitive software agents
· Cognitive services and applications
· Novel architectures for intelligent content delivery
· Adaptive QoS provisioning issues
· Peer-to-peer networking
· Adaptive rate video encoding
· Intelligent traffic management and control
· Experimental test-beds and results
· Programmable services interfaces
· Intelligent transport and routing protocols
· Adaptive, congestion controlled multicast / management and control
· Intelligent algorithms
· Service-aware congestion and traffic control protocols
· Wireless and mobile issues for intelligent services
· Adaptive security issues
· Case studies
Original, unpublished contributions prepared in accordance to the IEEE J-SAC
format will be considered. Papers NOT related to one of the above listed
topics WILL NOT be reviewed. Electronic submission in PDF format ONLY
should be sent to one of the guest editors listed below. The following
timetable shall apply:

IEEE Network Call for Papers
Protection, Restoration, and Disaster Recovery
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/net/ntwrk/cfpnetwork2003.pdf
Guest Editors:
Debanjan Saha, Tellium, Inc.
Satish Tripathi, University of California
James Manchester, Tellium, Inc.
Scope:
Technological innovations are enabling today's networks to
carry increasingly higher volumes of data, much of which
is mission critical. As networks grow and become an integral
part of our daily lives, the consequences of a failure
become more pronounced. Even a brief outage can result in
the loss of very large amounts of critical information and
disrupt our day-to-day life and business. Network protection
and automatic restoration can minimize the impact of network
failures. Such protection mechanisms are generally implemented
at several protocol layers and are the subject of this special
issue.
The objective of this special issue of IEEE Network Magazine
is to assemble a series of state-of-the-art articles on protection,
restoration, and disaster recovery in different layers of the network.
In particular, we are interested in tutorial, survey, and original
research articles on, but not limited to, the following topics:
* Traditional SONET/SDH Ring protection mechanisms
* Optical mesh protection, Resilient Packet Ring (RPR)
* IP network restoration - MPLS, fast convergence of routing protocols
* Protection and restoration in ATM and Frame Relay networks
* Restoration in wireless and wireline telephone networks
* Signaling network (SS7 etc.) protection and recovery
* Disaster recovery in OSS and network management systems
* Resiliency at the application layer, emergency services (e.g. 911)
* Multi-tier restoration and interaction of different layers
* Experimental studies, applications impact
Submission Guidelines: Interested authors should submit an electronic
version of the manuscript either in Postscript or PDF format as an
email attachment to one of the guest editors. Additional information
including "Guidelines for authors" is available at the IEEE Network Website:
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/net/ntwrk/authors.html
Important Dates
Submission Deadline: February 15, 2003
Notification of Acceptance: June 15, 2003

Call for Papers
Supporting Multimedia Multicast/Broadcast Services in 3G/4G Networks
Special Issue of IEEE Communication Magazine
Motivation
Current 3G system provides point to point service. There is a strong
interest to provide multimedia
broadcast/multicast service over 3G network. Such multicast services allow
unidirectional
point-to-multipoint transmission of multimedia data (e.g. text, audio,
picture, video) from a
single source point to a multicast group in a multicast area. An example of
a service using the
multicast mode could be a football results service for which a subscription
is required.
Work has started in 3GPP and 3GPP2 to investigate how to enhance 3G system
to provide multicast
service. Many design issues need to be worked out before multicast services
can be deployed in
3G systems. For an example, questions like how the 3G system admits
multicast services, how the
radio access network selects between the use of point-to-point and
point-to-multipoint radio
bearers to deliver MBMS services, how the network alert MBMS subscribed
users on the availability
of MBMS streams. Mobility management of MBMS users need to be considered
too. Handoffs from one
cell/Radio Network Controller to another need to be fast such that packet
losses for MBMS streams
are acceptable.
Since users are expected to be charged for such multicast issues,
authentication and security
issues related to MBMS needs to be worked out.
Scope
In response to the above momentum, this special issue aims at providing a
timely and concise
update of the current activities and findings in this area. In addition, it
aims to address the
key technical challenges associated with these services. In this context,
papers are solicited
reporting on representative topics such as:
* Enhanced 3G architecture design for MBMS services
* Radio resource management strategies for MBMS services
* Paging Strategy for MBMS services
* Overlay WLAN/3G architecture for providing MBMS services
* Airlink Scheduling for MBMS services
* Power control issues for MBMS services
* Security/Authentication Issues for MBMS services
* Performance Studies

PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
The First ACM Conference on Embedded Networked Sensor Systems
SenSys 2003
http://www.cens.ucla.edu/sensys03/
November 5-7, 2003, Los Angeles, California, USA
Sponsored by: ACM (Sigcomm, Sigmobile, Sigarch, Sigmetrics, Sigops), and NSF
SenSys 2003 introduces a high caliber forum for research on systems
issues in the emerging area of
embedded, networked sensors. These distributed systems of numerous
smart sensors and actuators
connecting computational capabilities to the physical world have the
potential to revolutionize a
wide array of application areas by providing an unprecedented density
and fidelity of
instrumentation. They also present a host of novel systems challenges
because of resource
constraints, uncertainty, irregularity, and scale. SenSys design issues
cut across multiple
fields, including wireless communication, networking, operating systems,
architecture, low-power
circuits, distributed algorithms, data processing, scheduling, sensors,
energy harvesting, and
signal processing, so a holistic approach is required. SenSys seeks to
provide a cross-disciplinary
venue for researchers addressing the rich space of networked sensor
system design issues to
interact and exchange recent results. It is the first of a planned
series of annual meetings with
a single-track technical program and a hands-on research exhibition.
This inaugural 2003 conference
shall take place in Los Angeles, CA.

*CALL FOR PAPERS*
ELEVENTH INTERNATIONAL WORKSHOP
on QUALITY of SERVICE (IWQoS)
http://iwqos03.cs.berkeley.edu/
June 2-4, 2003
Doubletree Hotel
Monterey, California
Supported by technical co-sponsorship by/in-cooperation with
IEEE Communications Society, ACM SIGCOMM and ACM SIGMOBILE
(approval pending).
Important dates:
----------------
Paper deadline: *February 14, 2003*
Notification of acceptance: March 24, 2003
Final paper due: April 8, 2003
IWQoS is a successful series of workshops providing an international
forum for the presentation and discussion of new research and ideas on
quality of service (QoS). The goal of the workshop is to bring
together researchers, developers, and practitioners working in this
area to discuss recent and innovative results, and identify future
directions and challenges, in developing practical systems where
predictable and controlled performance is a central requirement.
Papers are solicited on all aspects of architecture, algorithm, and
protocol design for systems in which QoS requirements are important.
In addition to traditional IWQoS topics such as service guarantees and
admission control, papers offering research contributions related to
robustness, resilience, security, and predictability in networking and
distributed systems are particularly solicited.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Scalable QoS architectures
* Analytical and simulation models for QoS
* QoS control for middleware
* QoS-aware programming models and languages
* QoS issues in overlay and peer-to-peer networks
* QoS issues in ad-hoc networks
* Robust and resilient systems
* Content delivery networks with service guarantees
* Service assurances in wireless and mobile environments
* QoS support for information appliances
* Modeling user and application QoS requirements
* Charging, accounting, and pricing for QoS
* Experiences with QoS (measurements, tests, evaluations)
IWQoS aims to allow rapid dissemination of research results and to
provide fast turnaround. The deadline for papers is therefore as close
to the conference as the publishers allow. In the past the workshop
has been cross-disciplinary, well focused, with the emphasis on
innovation. As a result, a considerable amount of time is devoted to
informal discussion.
