Call for Papers, MobiSys 2005: The Third International Conference on
Mobile Systems, Applications, and Services
June 6-8, 2005
Seattle, Washington, USA

Jointly sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE and The USENIX Association, in
cooperation with ACM SIGOPS
-----------------------------------------------------
Dear Colleague:
The Mobisys 2005 Program Committee would like to remind you that the
submission deadline for The Third International Conference on Mobile
Systems, Applications, and Services, is quickly approaching. Please
submit your paper titles and abstracts by 11:59 p.m. EST Wednesday,
November 3, 2004. Full papers are due November 8, 2004.
MobiSys 2005, to be held June 6-8, 2005, in Seattle, Washington, seeks
to present innovative, significant research in the area of mobile and
wireless systems. This will be a 2.5-day conference, featuring
refereed paper presentations, demos, and poster sessions; it will be
co-located with several closely related workshops. The conference
particularly values the practical experience gained from designing,
building, and using mobile systems, applications, and services.
MobiSys addresses broad systems issues in mobile computing. For a list
of potential topics and detailed submission instructions, see
http://www.usenix.org/events/mobisys05/cfp/sub_instrux.html
The ideal MobiSys submission should present novel research that has
resulted in the implementation or evaluation of running systems.
Papers that describe the design of and experience with mobile system
architectures are favored over those narrowly focused on low-level
components. Please feel free to contact the Program Chairs at
mobisys05chairs(a)usenix.org to determine appropriateness.
Workshop Proposals
As in the past, MobiSys will be co-located with several workshops for
highly focused discussions of new and emerging topics. This year, we
are accepting proposals for workshop topics. Proposals--no longer than
a few pages--should identify the workshop theme, potential program
chair(s), potential program committee members, and a list of focused
topic areas comprising the workshop's scope. See
http://www.usenix.org/events/mobisys05/cfp/wkshps_cfp.pdf for a PDF of
the complete Call for Workshop Proposals.
Important Dates:
Paper abstracts due: November 3, 2004, 11:59 p.m. EST
Workshop proposals due: November 1, 2004
Full papers due: November 8, 2004
Poster and demo proposals due: January 31, 2005
Notification of acceptance: February 7, 2005
Camera-ready final papers due: May 3, 2005
We look forward to your submissions.
On behalf of the MobiSys Organizing Committee,
Kang G. Shin, University of Michigan
MobiSys 2005 General Chair

Call For Papers
MULTIMEDIA TOOLS AND APPLICATIONS (MTAP)
An International Journal
Special Issue on Advances in Consumer Communications and Networking
The demand for networked consumer systems and devices is large
and growing rapidly. At home, in a car or truck, at work or at play,
Internet users want transparent internetworking of their systems and
devices to provide them entertainment, information, and
communications. This internetworking should be on-demand and should be
set up with whomever or whatever users want, regardless of time or
location. As a result, consumer networking is gaining increasing
attention from industry, spawning a range of dramatically different
solutions in different environments such as wireless, wireline, and
power-line communications systems. These environments have their own
strengths and challenges to overcome. The scope of consumer networking
spans from the body area and personal area networks to home and wide area
networks. In the not too distant future, we will see Ad hoc networks
augmented with sensors sharing network information that enables devices
and systems to seamlessly interact with Internet and wide area wireless
systems such as WiFi, 3G and future 4G networks. This phenomenon,
"Consumer Communications and Networking", has been attracting many
researchers in diverse areas from networking to consumer electronics.
The focus of this Special Issue is to present the latest approaches and
technical solutions in the area of consumer and home networking. We
solicit papers covering a variety of topics including, but not limited
to:
Ad-Hoc and Sensor Networks

Theme:
Future wireless networks will generally be characterized by
heterogeneity in architecture, protocols and air interfaces. The
wireless networking scene is dominated by two distinct networking
platforms: (a) cellular networks, which passed through multiple
generations -1G, 2G and 3G, and (b) Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs)
championed by the IEEE 802.11 networks. Recent trends indicate that 3G
networks and WLANs will co-exist to offer public wireless broadband
services to end users. The two platforms offer characteristics that
complement each other perfectly.
The 3G cellular systems such as Universal Mobile Telecommunications
System (UMTS) and Code Division Multiple Access (cdma2000) will support
real-time and non-real-time multimedia services with data rates from 144
kb/s to 2 Mb/s with wide coverage and nearly universal roaming. However,
the costs of acquiring the necessary radio spectrum and the required
network equipment upgrades are very high. This is in contrast to WLAN
systems such as IEEE 802.11 a/b/g, which provide affordable services and
bit rates surpassing those of 3G systems, up to 11 Mb/s with 802.11b and
54 Mb/s with 802.11a/g. However, the coverage offered by WLANs is quit
limited and lacks roaming support.
The complementary characteristics of 3G cellular systems (slow, wide
coverage) and WLAN (fast, limited coverage) make it attractive to
integrate these two technologies to provide ubiquitous wireless access.
The purpose of integrating 3G systems and WLANs is to make it possible
to use the best parts of both systems. High bandwidth WLANs are used for
data transfer where available and 3G systems can be used where WLAN
coverage is lacking. Development and standardization efforts are
currently underway for defining suitable architectures for 3G/WLAN
integration. However, designing a network architecture that efficiently
integrates 3G systems and WLAN is a challenge task that needs a lot of
research efforts.
In this special issue, we intend to publish a collection of high quality
papers by world leading researchers that present state-of-the-art
research in the area of 3G/WLAN integration.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
1. Mobility management
2. Seamless vertical handoff techniques between 3G and WLAN
3. Location management techniques
4. Architecture design scenarios for integrating 3G and WLAN systems
5. Network selection criteria
6. Bandwidth adaptation
7. Consistent quality of service across 3G and WLAN
8. Adaptive quality of service provisioning
9. Performance evaluation studies
10. Pricing and Billing Issues
11. Standardization activities
