LAST CALL FOR PAPERS
WWAN 2005
2nd International Workshop on Wireless Ad Hoc Networking
http://www.lifl.fr/RD2P/WWAN2005
to be held in conjunction with
The 25th IEEE International Conference on
Distributed Computing Systems (ICDCS-2005)
Columbus, Ohio, USA, June 6-9, 2005
http://www.cis.ohio-state.edu/icdcs05
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Purpose
Wireless networks and mobile computing research has until recently
concentrated on single-hop networks (network nodes communicating
directly to a fixed infrastructure), such as cellular or satellite
systems. Wireless ad hoc networking covers multi-hop scenarios
(network nodes communicating via other network nodes) such as
conference, hospital, battlefield, rescue, and monitoring
scenarios. Wireless ad-hoc networks are formed by a set of hosts
that communicate with each other over a wireless channel. Each node
has the ability to communicate directly with another node in its
physical neighborhood. They operate in a self-organized and
decentralized manner and message communication takes place via
multi-hop spreading. A packet is sent to its target node through a
set of intermediate nodes that act as routers. Particular ad hoc
network systems include packet radio networks, sensor networks,
personal communication systems, rooftop networks, and wireless local
area networks.
This workshop covers the area of ad hoc networking, from physical
issues up to applications aspects. In particular, it will cover
physical, data link, network and transport layers, as well as
applications, security, simulation and power management issues in
sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks. It is the
goal of this workshop to review ad hoc protocols and models and to
reflect the latest in the state of the art in ad hoc networks. It
seeks to provide up to date information on research and development
activities in the rapidly growing area of ad hoc networks.
The first edition of WWAN held last year during ICDCS-2004 (Tokyo,
Japan) was organized by David Simplot-Ryl and Ivan Stojmenovic. In
response to the Call for Papers, 42 papers from 20 different
countries had been submitted. Based on three review reports per
paper, they was classified as accept, reject or discuss. For those
papers in the discuss list, additional opinions were sought. As a
result, a total of 21 papers were selected for presentation at WWAN
2004 and were organized in 7 sessions.

Topics of Interest
We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished
contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc
networking. Possible topics of interest include, but are not limited
to:
- Applications and history of ad hoc networks,
- Physical layer of ad hoc networks,
- Pervasive and wearable computing,

Special Section on “Medium Access and Call Admission Control Algorithms
for Next Generation Wireless Networks”
ACM Mobile Computing and Communications Review (MC2R)
Theme
With the pervasive presence of mobile personal wireless computing
devices, wireless communication technologies are rapidly evolving and
influencing our daily way of life. The new wireless data and multimedia
services that are added and supported on wireless networks alongside the
traditional voice services pose formidable challenges to these networks
in their effort to satisfy strict Quality of Service (QoS) requirements.
These challenges are further exasperated by the inherent transmission
impairments of wireless links (fading, noise) and user mobility.
To cope with the challenges related to supporting both the existing and
the ever increasing new services, next generation wireless technologies
will need to fine tune and/or incorporate new sets of traffic control
procedures. This special section will be focusing on two such control
procedures related to wireless medium sharing and network overload.
A well designed Medium Access Control (MAC) protocol reduces system
costs by maximizing system capacity while successfully integrating
different classes of traffic (e.g., voice, data, multimedia) and
optimally allocating the limited radio channel bandwidth among them.
Congestion control poses yet additional set of challenges to wireless
network providers. Network congestion is difficult to resolve when
real-time traffic, sensitive to both latency and packet loss, is
present, without jeopardizing the QoS expected by the users of that
traffic. Call Admission Control (CAC) is a strategy used to limit the
number of call connections into the network in order to reduce network
congestion, therefore enabling the system to provide the desired QoS to
newly incoming as well as existing calls. The mobility of users adds
challenging requirements to the Call Admission Control Mechanism. When
mobile users change their point of attachment, the end-to-end path may
be changed while they still expect to receive the same QoS. This implies
that the new end-to-end path should also support the existing QoS (i.e.,
a reservation on the new path may be required).
Topics of interest
This highly selective special section of the ACM MC2R aims at providing
a state-of-the-art reference of the current research in the fields of
Medium Access Control Protocols and Call Admission Control Algorithms
for next generation wireless networks.
Previously unpublished, original papers of very high quality that are
not currently under review by another conference or journal are
solicited focusing on representative topics related to this special
section, such as:
> Medium Access Control Protocols and Transmission Scheduling
Mechanisms.
> Call Admission Control and Traffic Policing Mechanisms for wireless
networks.
> Channel Allocation.
> CDMA/TDMA wireless systems.
> QoS issues for multimedia traffic over wireless networks.
> Performance evaluation of wireless networks.
> Mobile service and QoS management.
> Wireless multimedia services.
> Handoff algorithms for mobility support.
> Protocols and algorithms coping with limited bandwidth and
intermittent connectivity of wireless networks.
Important Dates
Paper submission deadline: February 28, 2005.
Notification of acceptance: June 15, 2005.
Submission of final version: July 15, 2005.
Submission Instructions
Prospective authors should submit their paper electronically to the
email address of one of the three guest editors.
All material submitted must be in PostScript or PDF format. If using
PostScript, only version 2 or later should be used, and reference only
Computer Modern or standard Adobe fonts (Courier, Times Roman, or
Helvetica); other PostScript type 1 and type 2 fonts may be used but
must be included in the PostScript file. Type 3 fonts should not be used
as they reproduce poorly in the digital library and on many printers.
Paper length should be the equivalent of no longer than 12 pages in MC2R
format (two columns, 11pt font).

Video Processing, and Multimedia (PDIVM'2005)
in conjunction with the
International Parallel and Distributed Processing Symposium IPDPS
Denver, Colorado, USA, April 8th, 2005
The special session constitutes one of the sessions of the PDIVM 2005
workshop, organized as part of the 2005 IPDPS Conference. There will be
no separate registration for the special session or the workshop.
Accepted papers will be published by IEEE CS Press (a CD-ROM with a
printed abstracts book).
**************
TOPICS
**************
Even though many multimedia applications are ideally suited for parallel
execution, most researchers in multimedia do not benefit from the many
commodity clusters and wide-area Grid systems available around the world
today. Primarily, this problem is due to the lack of user-friendly tools
that can effectively help non-expert parallel programmers in creating
high performance multimedia applications. Clearly, the key to effective
application development by non-experts in parallel computing lies in the
availability of high-level programming models for multimedia processing.
This special session brings together researchers and developers working
on all aspects of the design of user-friendly programming models, tools,
and frameworks for multimedia computing. Issues of interest include, but
are not limited to:
*) domain-specific programming models
*) languages for multimedia computing (object-oriented, functional, ...)
*) multimedia server-based approaches
*) domain-specific compiler directives
*) automatic parallelization
*) automatic performance optimization
*) performance modeling
*) skeletons and algorithmic patterns
*) evaluation of user-friendly tools and frameworks
*) applications in user-friendly multimedia computing
**************
SUBMISSION
**************

HOW TO SUBMIT
=============
Information on how to submit electronically will be available at:
http://www.podc.org/podc2005/
SUBMISSIONS FORMAT
==================
All submissions must be in Postscript or PDF format. On the cover
page, include:
(1) contact person's name, phone, fax, email and complete postal
mail address,
(2 title of paper,
(3) names and affiliations of all authors,
(4) a brief abstract,
(5) keywords, and
(6) the number of pages.
In addition, please indicate in boldface whether any author is a
member of the program committee, and, for a regular presentation,
whether it is eligible for the best student paper award (see
details below), and whether it should be considered a brief
announcement (if not accepted as a regular presentation).
All submissions must report on original research. A submission
for a regular presentation must be no longer than 10 pages on
letter-size paper using at least 11-point font. Additional
details may be included in a clearly marked appendix, which
will be read at the discretion of the program committee. Papers
submitted for regular presentations must not have previously
appeared in a journal or conference with published proceedings
and must not be concurrently submitted to any other conference.
Any partial overlap with any such published or concurrently
submitted paper must be clearly indicated.
A submission for a brief announcement must be no longer than 3
pages on letter-size paper using at least 11-point font. Such
submissions may describe work in progress or work presented
elsewhere. If requested by the authors, a submission that
is not selected for regular presentation may also be considered
for a brief announcement. Such a request will not affect
consideration of the paper for regular presentation.
Posters and demonstrations are also solicited; details will appear
on the conference web page.

3rd International Conference on Advances in Pattern Recognition
----------------------------------------------------------------
The third international conference on Advances in Pattern Recognition
will showcase the latest research in the area of pattern recognition and
machine learning. The focus will be on new and emerging techniques in
pattern recognition and machine learning. The conference has three
specific goals: (a) The description and discussion of new techniques
that will make a step change in the area; (b) The use of unconventional
and often off-the-mainstream techniques to solve complex tasks; and (c)
A theoretical understanding of how the nature of data impacts upon known
techniques, their limitations, and comparison to each other. The
conference will focus on both applied work as well as theoretical
advances. It is however theoretical contribution that will underpin
research and will be emphasised in the review process.
The conference will be organised in Bath which is the best-preserved
Georgian city in Britain, a showpiece of Georgian architecture with
picturesque streets and stone-fronted houses. The Romans were captivated
by the area of Bath over 2,000 years ago, when Bath was a vast green
valley with a miraculous stream of endless hot water. The Roman bath and
temple complex are still a world-class attraction. Beautiful and
elegant, Bath enjoys many thousands of tourists from all over the world.
The conference will be organized at the University of Bath.
The ICAPR conference will be co-located with the International
Postgraduate Conference on Pattern Analysis for Applications in Physical
and Life Sciences (http://www.ipc2005.org.uk), which will be organised
on the same dates at the same location. The demonstrations of any
software will take place jointly.
We invite you to attend and publish at ICAPR 2005.
