20th ACM Symposium on
Operating Systems Principles
October 23-26, 2005
The Grand Hotel,
Brighton, United Kingdom
General chair Andrew Herbert, Microsoft Research
aherbert(a)microsoft.com, +44 1223 479818
Program chair Ken Birman, Cornell University
ken(a)cs.cornell.edu, +1 (607)-255-9199
Sponsored by ACM SIGOPS
Authors are invited to submit papers to the 20th SOSP reporting on
original research related to the design, implementation, analysis,
evaluation, and deployment of operating systems. We seek submissions
of high quality that significantly further the knowledge and
understanding of the systems community. In keeping with SOSP
tradition, we will favor work that explores new territory, continues a
significant research dialog, or reflects on experience with practical
applications of the community's knowledge. Papers of particular merit
will be forwarded to ACM Transactions on Computer Systems for possible
publication in a special issue.
The symposium attracts attendees with diverse backgrounds. We solicit
papers in the traditional core of the OS field, as well as in the
interfaces to areas such as computer architecture, networking,
programming languages, and databases. Topics of interest include, but
are not restricted to:
Robustness of complex systems Mobile computing
Scalability and performance Fault tolerance and high-availability
Security Power management
File systems Sensor Networks
I/O architectures Support for Web systems
Overlay networks Empirical studies
Submissions will be done electronically. Detailed instructions for
the submission process can be found at the conference web site.
Submitted papers must be no longer than fourteen (14) 8.5"x11" or A4
pages in a typeface no smaller than 10 point. The page limit includes
everything: references, title page, figures, appendices, etc.
Additional formatting guidelines for submissions can be found on the
web page. Papers should include new contributions; substantially
identical results must not have been published previously or be under
consideration for publication elsewhere. Authors must not be identified
in the submissions, either explicitly or by implication
(e.g., through the references or acknowledgments). Submissions
violating these rules or the formatting guidelines on the web page will
not be considered for publication.
Blind reviewing of full papers will be done by the program committee,
with limited use of outside referees. Papers will be provisionally
accepted subject to revision and approval by a program committee
member acting as a shepherd. On acceptance, authors will be required
to sign an ACM copyright release form. Your submission indicates that
you agree to this. Papers will be held in full confidence during the
reviewing process. Authors of accepted papers will be encouraged to
supply electronic versions of their papers, as well as source code and
raw data to help others replicate and better understand their results.
There will be a scholarship programme to support student registration
and attendance. Details can be found on the web site http://www.sosp-20.com.

Call for Papers:
1st International Workshop on Services and Infrastructure for the
Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet
SIUMI 2005
In conjunction with the 25th Int. Conference on Distributed Computing
Systems (ICDCS'05)
Columbus, Ohio, USA, June 6th, 2005
( Web site: http://lia.deis.unibo.it/siumi/
pdf version of the SIUMI'05 cfp:
http://lia.deis.unibo.it/siumi/cfp.pdf )
Advances in mobile and wireless communication are enlarging and enhancing
the services provided by the Internet infrastructure towards any time, any
place and any device features. Ubiquitous services impose new requirements
to the entire infrastructure, from the system to the middleware and the
applications that should be able to adapt traditional services to different
mobile user terminals and profiles, and embed new functions and tools to
support the new services and new requirements of the future scenario.
The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of a
strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless
devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow the
requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile
counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such as
discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource
shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity
property, are challenging issues that call for a re-examination on the
design of the middleware of both the fixed and the mobile counterpart. Only
a new methodology to produce a synergic design of an integrated and unified
middleware can permit the deployment of all viable and available services
that make possible to consider new properties for fruition, mainly
connected with the new features of context-awareness. Many different
provisioning scenarios are on the way, from the possibility of providing
non-strict real-time data streaming adapted to very different wireless
devices, by taking advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to
a possibility of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common
current locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by
taking into account different resources and energy consumption limitations.
This first workshop intends to put together different experiences by
providing a forum for researchers and engineers in academia and industry to
compare and exchange new ideas, research results, experiences, and products
about different aspects related to Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. Topics
of particular interest include, but are not limited to:
* Distributed platforms
* Content delivery architectures
* Caching and replication
* Peer-to-peer schemes
* Context-based services and applications
* Middleware and software supports
* Mobile-enabled middleware mechanisms
* Personalization and transcoding
* Mobile code and mobile agent technology
* Service deployment and adaptation
* Resource discovery algorithms
* Performance evaluation
* Resource and network monitoring
* Security issues
* QoS-based protocols and servers
* Resource and service management

[Fwd: Call for proposals: Special session "Adaptive Video Streaming" at ICIP05]

-------- Original Message --------
Subject: Call for proposals: Special session "Adaptive Video Streaming" at
ICIP05
Date: Wed, 17 Nov 2004 15:29:38 +0100
From: Markus Kampmann (AC/EDD) <markus.kampmann(a)ericsson.com>
To: 'special-session-icip05-recipients(a)ericsson.com'
> Dear colleagues,
>
> I am currently planning for a special session about "adaptive video streaming" at the next IEEE International Conference on Image Processing ICIP'05, Genova, Italy, 11-14 September 2005 (see http://www.icip05.org/call.htm).
>
> While video streaming is likely to become one of the most important services for mobile terminals in the near future, obtaining satisfactory quality from an end user perspective is still a challenge because of the varying conditions typical for wireless links and the limited capabilities of the mobile terminal. In order to avoid quality degradations caused by varying link rates, delay variations or cell updates, a streaming solution requires capabilities commonly referred to as > "> Adaptive Streaming> "> .
> Adaptive Streaming means that during the streaming session the transmission link characteristic is monitored and the streaming server changes its behavior if needed. Reaction to changed link conditions can include a multitude of different techniques, e.g. adjusting the rate at which the server transmits packets (transmission rate control), deciding which packets of the pre-encoded content to send or drop (packet scheduling) or switching to a stream with a content bit rate better suited to the current available bandwidth of the wireless link (stream switching). Recently, adaptive streaming features are included into Release 6 of the 3GPP streaming standard PPS. However, concrete reactions of the streaming server to changed link conditions are out of the scope of PSS.
>
> The special session about "adaptive video streaming" should describe the current status of research within this area. Therefore, I would appreciate it very much if you could contribute to this special session with a proposal for a paper.
> Your paper proposal should include the author names, paper title and a short abstract of around 100 words. Please send it to me until November 25th. I will forward it to the ICIP program committee for approval. Please note that a special session at ICIP contains a maximum of eight papers.
