Standardization activities within the IEEE 802.11 working group are already underway for evolving the dominant WLAN standard in several aspects, including security, mobility and quality of service (QoS. In addition, alternative physical and MAC layer proposals are being considered for improving bit rates to ranges in excess of 100 Mbps. Similar activities are taking placing within the ETSI BRAN project to further evolve the HIPERLAN/2 standard. At the same time, the core representative of WPANs, i.e. Bluetooth, is being further evolved by IEEE 802.15 TG1. Other task groups within IEEE 802.15 develop specifications for high- and low-rate WPANs, known as IEEE 802.15.3 and IEEE 802.15.4 respectively. Moreover, interworking mechanisms are being investigated for combining WLAN/WPANs and second-/third-generation cellular networks into hybrid data networks, capable of very high bit rates in strategic locations (hotspots). 3GPP is one notable standardization body that currently standardizes such interworking mechanisms. Last but not least, it is important to note the numerous research projects worldwide that address a vast collection of issues related to WLANs and WPANs, ranging from the seamless mobility across UTRAN and WLAN (see for example the IST EVOLUTE project at _http://evolute.intranet.gr/)_ to heterogeneous multihop wireless networks consisting of combinations of WPAN and WLAN technologies (see for example the IST 6HOP project). All these activities combined with market forecasts, which report that WLANs and WPANs will encounter a tremendous growth in the next years, demonstrate that WLAN and WPAN technologies will play a significant role in the future and will severely impact our business and personal life styles. However, several issues still need to be efficiently addressed, including power consumption, physical and MAC layer architecture, radio resource management, interworking, QoS, security, co-existence with other unlicensed technologies, self configuration, etc. The goal of this special issue is to address the above issues and provide a timely and concise reference of the current activities and research findings in the fields of WLANs and WPANs. In addition, it aims to address the key technical challenges associated with these technologies. In order to use such services, users of wireless devices need to locate them; they can be located on remote servers or even on peers' devices in a mobile ad hoc setting (or MANET). Therefore, one of the fundamental challenges is the discovery of relevant services in mobile ad hoc networks, but more importantly, selecting a suitable service and interacting with it to accomplish a useful task. Several available service discovery protocols are not suitable for MANETs simply because they have been designed for infrastructure-based networks. In addition, such protocols offer no location-based and context-aware selection mechanisms, and feature minimal interaction models that are not suited for wireless devices with limited capabilities in terms of storage and processing power. The aim of this special section is to present most recent research findings on "discovery and interaction of mobile services". We are seeking papers that address discovery, selection, and interaction issues of mobile services. New paradigms in the areas of network design, transmission technology, hardware and software solutions, applications, services, and business models will be necessary to realize such interactive environments. The arising challenges are currently being addressed in a number of research projects within the European Information Society Technologies (IST) framework. The 14th IST Summit focuses on bringing together experts from the worldwide wireless industry and research communities, with a special emphasis on providing a forum for European research initiatives. Recent advances in all fields related to mobile and wireless communications will be presented, thereby facilitating the identification of future trends, illumination of business opportunities, and discussion on the future roles of various bodies from academia, industry, and research centres in helping to form the vision of an ambient, truly intelligent communications environment. ACM/SIGMOBILE MobiCom 2004, the Tenth Annual International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking, will be held from September 26 to October 1 2004, in beautiful, historic Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. MobiCom is the premier international forum focusing on all areas of mobile computing and mobile and wireless networking at the link layer and above. Technical paper submission and selection for MobiCom 2004 is now complete, but if you are a student working on MobiCom topics of interest, it is not too late to present your work at the conference, since MobiCom 2004 solicits posters for the Student Poster Session. *** STUDENT POSTER SESSION *** MobiCom 2004 solicits student posters that present recent and on-going research by students on mobile computing and mobile and wireless networking topics. Presenting a poster at MobiCom is a great chance for students to obtain interesting and valuable feedback on their on-going work from a knowledgeable crowd at the conference. Poster proposals should be a maximum of 2 pages in length. Although posters do not need to describe completed work, the work should be advanced beyond the initial stages. The primary author of all poster submissions must be a student. Poster abstracts will not be published in the conference proceedings but will be published on the web before the conference.
