www.mucs2006.org
Autonomic Pervasive Computing & Communications
In cooperation with Pervasive 2006
Venue: National Maritime College, Cork Institute of Technology, Cork,
Ireland
Date: May 4th and 5th 20
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
Ubiquitous and Pervasive Communications, as evidenced in pervasive
computing and smart space applications present significant management
challenges for successful delivery of highly adaptive services across
heterogeneous networks, middleware, applications and devices. Today’s
management systems are unable to cope with the complexity, heterogeneity
and automation required by the pervasive computing vision. New
paradigms, models and technology need to be developed to allow computer
systems manage themselves in accordance with high-level guidance from
humans. This workshop seeks to explore the theoretic, technological and
organizational challenges in managing ubiquitous communications and
application services.
The workshop provides a single-track scientific programme containing a
blend of keynote presentations from leaders in the research of
communications and services management systems, peer-reviewed papers and
a small selection of invited presentations. The goal of the workshop is
to investigate the state of the art in managing ubiquitous
communications and services from a broad perspective. Submissions are
invited for original, and previously unpublished research in all aspects
of management techniques in ubiquitous communications, including:
• Context Aware Self Management and Self Configuration Management
• Policy Based Management
• Autonomic Communication Management
• Wireless and Fixed Network Integrated Management
• Management of Smart Spaces and Applications (Smart Home/Office)
• Adaptive Service and Network Management
• Security, Privacy, and Trust Management in Ubiquitous
Communications
• Management and Control of Mobile Ad-hoc and Wireless Sensor
Networks
• Content Oriented Network & Service Management
• Distributed Self Management & Collaborative Governance
• Context Identification, Retrieval, Prediction and Management
• Service and Network Management for Optimised Personalisation
• Managing Collaborative Ubicomp Applications
• Provisioning and Maintenance of Quality of Service in Ubicomp
environments
• Knowledge Representation Techniques and Ontologies for
Distributed Management Services
• User Interaction with Self-Managing UbiComp Systems

*Call for Papers: IEEE Communications Magazine*
*Special Issue on “Advances in Visual Content Analysis and Adaptation
for Multimedia Communications”*
*Background*
Modern multimedia communication applications such as mobile television,
video telephony, streaming and gaming over wired and wireless networks
have had different economic success and societal impact to-date. Such
successes depend, to a large extend, on their abilities to surpass
technical challenges related to visual content adaptation and delivery,
which rely on solutions provided by visual content analysis. On the
other hand, current communications networks consist of channels with
various throughputs, quality of services (QoS) and protocols, and
heterogeneous terminals with wide range of capabilities, accessibilities
and user preferences. The rapidly increasing gap between the richness of
multimedia content and the variations of the channels and terminals
urges the development of techniques for universal multimedia content
access, which heavily relies on the visual analysis tools to understand
the data from all perspectives including network conditions, terminal
capabilities, coding and transmission efficiencies and user preferences.
Therefore, to effectively improve the usability, efficiency and
robustness of multimedia communications in general and visual content
access, adaptation and delivery in particular, visual analysis and
processing methods must be able to provide automatic or semi-automatic
solutions for:
* High accuracy content segmentation and representation
* Adapting or transcoding data for various channels and terminals
* Scalability across the visual content
* Content-aware robust coding and transmissions
*Scope of contributions*
The goal of this special issue is to collate and disseminate recent and
relevant contributions in the area of visual content analysis including
content representation, understanding, access, adaptation, protection
and transmission, with focus on their impact on visual communication
systems. Tutorial papers are solicited that cover the topics including
but not limited to:
* Channel-aware visual content adaptation
- Visual content repurposing
- Visual content transcoding
- Visual content protection
* Terminal-aware visual content adaptation
- Object segmentation and tracking
- Model-based and object-based representations
- Layered and scalable representations
* Visual content access and delivery
- Resource-efficient content-aware adaptation and transmission policies
- Robust content-based coding and transmissions
- Content-adaptive cross-layer system design and optimization
* Applications
- Video game repurposing for wireless transmission
- Video content indexing and retrieval for mobile appliances
- Visual analysis for mobile broadcasting
*Schedule:*
Full article submission: April 1, 2006
Acceptance/rejection/revision: July 1, 2006
Final manuscript due: September 1, 2006
Publication date: January 1, 2007

_________________________________________________________________________
Call for Papers:
2nd International Workshop on Services and Infrastructure for the
Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet
SIUMI 2006
In conjunction with the 26th Int. Conference on Distributed Computing
Systems (ICDCS'06)
Lisbon, Portugal, July 4th, 2006
( Web site: http://lia.deis.unibo.it/siumi/
pdf version of the SIUMI'06 cfp:
http://lia.deis.unibo.it/siumi/cfp.pdf )
Advances in mobile and wireless communication are enlarging and
enhancing the services provided by the Internet infrastructure towards
any time, any place and any device features. Ubiquitous services impose
new requirements to the entire infrastructure, from the system to the
middleware and the applications that should adapt traditional services
to different mobile user terminals and profiles, and embed new functions
and tools to support the new services and new requirements of the future
scenario.
The new Internet service infrastructure can only succeed on the basis of
a strict synergism between the heterogeneous variety of mobile wireless
devices and the fixed network organization that should suite and follow
the requirements and constraints imposed by the wireless and mobile
counterpart. The specific limitations of mobile wireless devices, such
as discontinuity in connections, disconnection, and energy and resource
shortages, connected with the new location- and context-sensitivity
property, are challenging issues. Only a new methodology to produce a
synergic design of an integrated and unified middleware can permit the
deployment of all viable and available services that make possible to
consider new properties for fruition, mainly connected with the new
features of context-awareness. Many different provisioning scenarios are
on the way, from the possibility of providing non-strict real-time data
streaming adapted to very different wireless devices, by taking
advantage of caching and multicast wherever possible, to a possibility
of creating dynamic and impromptu communities based on common current
locality and on presently available heterogeneous devices, by taking
into account different resources and energy consumption limitations
After the encouraging answer to the first edition, this second workshop
intends to offer a renovated opportunity of putting together different
experiences by providing a forum for researchers and engineers in
academia and industry to compare and exchange new ideas, research
results, experiences, and products about different aspects related to
Ubiquitous and Mobile Internet. Topics of particular interest include,
but are not limited to:
* Distributed platforms
* Content delivery architectures
* Caching and replication
* Peer-to-peer schemes
* Context-based services and applications
* Middleware and software supports
* Mobile-enabled middleware mechanisms
* Personalization and transcoding
* Mobile code and mobile agent technology
* Service deployment and adaptation
* Resource discovery algorithms
* Performance evaluation
* Resource and network monitoring
* Security issues
* QoS-based protocols and servers
* Resource and service management

New Trends in Network Architectures and Services:
International Workshop on Self-Organizing Systems
(IWSOS 2006)
September 18 - 20, 2006
University of Passau, Germany
http://www.fmi.uni-passau.de/iwsos
Prospective technical co-sponsors:
EuroNGI, IFIP, IEEE, ACM, GI, IEE, IEICE, KICS
Overview:
The evolution of the Internet reveals surprising turns and obstacles.
Centralized approaches of introducing new services and architectures
consistently failed to materialize at large scale. Quality of Service,
group communication, or mobility support are only some examples for
the difficulty with orchestrated approaches.
The success story of the Internet, on the other hand, is strongly linked
to decentralization. Robustness to failures or flexibility in introducing
new applications such as the World Wide Web or Peer-to-Peer systems have
been key momentum to technological advancements and economics. Future
networks are envisioned to be highly complex and difficult to manage due
to heterogeneity of networks, spontaneous set-up of networks, and the
envisioned number of interconnected devices, appliances, and artifacts.
The question that poses itself is whether self-organization can be
exploited to a larger scale for solving some of the pending problems for
such future networks. Self-organization may even play a key architectural
role of the future Internet for enhanced flexibility and evolvability.
It is the goal of this workshop to bring together leading international
and multi-disciplinary researchers to create a visionary forum for inves-
tigating the potentials in self-organization and the means to achieve it.
