PRELIMINARY ANNOUNCEMENT AND CALL FOR PAPERS
MED HOC NET 2006
The Fifth Annual
MEDITERRANEAN AD HOC NETWORKING
Workshop
http://www.medhoc.diit.unict.it/2006/
June 14-17 2006
Lipari, Italy
************************************************************
Ad hoc networks have attracted the attention of the research
community in the last several years. Now that some of the
fundamental issues and challenges of ad hoc networking have
been clearly assessed, the focus is partially shifting to
new issues, which include application scenarios (road
safety, disaster recovery, sensors and actuators, etc.),
autonomous Organization and operation, optimization and
control, service creation and support, middleware. Moreover,
wireless MESH networking is emerging as an "ad hoc spin-off"
aimed at extending and integrating the multi-hop paradigm
with more traditional networking, which poses new and
exciting technical challenges.
Med-Hoc-Net 2006 is the major annual international workshop
aiming to serve as a platform for researchers and
visionaries from academia, research labs, and industry from
all over the world. Sharing ideas, views, results, and
experiences in the field of wireless multi-hop networking is
what Med-Hoc-Net 2006 intends to be about. Anything from
theoretical and experimental achievements, to innovative ad
hoc systems, prototyping efforts, and case studies is of
interest to the Med-Hoc-Net community.
The papers solicited in Med-Hoc-Net 2006 cover a variety of
topics related to ad hoc and MESH networks, including but
not limited to:
- Novel multi-hop wireless network architectures
- Routing algorithms and protocols
- MAC protocols, scheduling, power control and radio
resource sharing
- Transport layer protocols for multi-hop networks
- Middleware for ad hoc networks
- Application driven architectures and protocols
- Sensor network applications and protocols
- Vehicular networks
- Integration of ad hoc networks with wireless access
networks
- Implementations, testbeds, and prototypes
- Technology related issues (IEEE 802.11, Bluetooth, ZigBee,
IEEE 802.16, IEEE 802.20, etc.)
- Self organization and network reconfiguration
- Optimization models and algorithms
- Resource and service discovery
- Call admission and traffic shaping policies for ad-hoc
networks
- Use of advanced antenna technologies (MIMO, beam forming,
etc.)
- QoS support
- Security and privacy
The members of program committee will referee all papers,
and accepted papers will be published in the conference
proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be published in
the Elsevier Ad Hoc Networks journal.
Manuscripts must be formatted according to the IEEE
double-column standard format, with the exception of the
font size, which must be 11pt. Authors should use only
standard fonts, i.e., Times Roman, Courier, Symbol, and
Helvetica, or their equivalent. The maximum length of the

CALL FOR PAPERS
************************
SECOND INTERNATIONAL SYMPOSIUM ON MULTIMEDIA OVER WIRELESS
(in conjunction with IWCMC 2006)
Sheraton Wall Centre, Vancouver, Canada
July 3-6, 2006
http://www.ece.northwestern.edu/~haohong/ismw2006/index.html
The rapid growth in interactive multimedia applications, such as video
telephonies, video games and TV broadcasting has resulted in spectacular
strides in the progress of wireless communication systems. The current third
generation (3G) wireless systems and the next generation (4G) wireless systems
in planning support higher bit rates. However, the high error rates and
stringent delay constraints in wireless systems are still significant
obstacles for these applications and services. On the other hand, the
development of more advanced wireless systems provides opportunities for
proposing novel wireless multimedia protocols and new applications and
services that can take the maximum advantage of the systems.
The symposium aims to provide an excellent forum for all experts working in
these areas to join together and to discuss various important issues on
multimedia over wireless. The timing of this symposium is set such that the
ideas that come out of it can affect the evolution of 4G. The papers submitted
to this symposium should focus on the state-of-the-art research in various
important areas related to emerging technologies and standards on the coding
and transmission of multimedia information over wireless networks. We solicit
papers covering a variety of topics that include, but not limited to the
following subjects:
Advanced multimedia coding algorithms
Error resilient and error concealment
Video quality assessment
Rate control for wireless video
Scalable and multiple description multimedia coding and transmission
Joint source-channel coding
Efficient transport protocols for wireless
Optimal resource allocation for energy-efficient wireless multimedia
Cross-layer multimedia communication system design and optimization
Proxy-based systems for video transcoding and content distribution
Lightweight video encoding methods based on distributed source coding
Quality of Service issues

************************************************************************
Through recent technological development researchers are now able to embed
sensing, computation, communication and actuation in personal devices and
everyday artefacts giving them the possibility to create large scale systems
of interacting smart appliances, physical objects and wearable computers.
This penetration of computation in all aspects of everyday life and work
requires thorough exploration of new kinds of embedded and smart devices and
software infrastructures and architectures that support such large-scale
scenarios beyond the lab environment.
The diversity of systems, devices, services and applications and their
distributed nature raises important questions about collaboration between
system components. Appropriate solutions often have to take potential resource
limitations of connected devices and appliances into account.
Contextual awareness, digital representations of physical system components as

__________________________________________________
With the shift towards the knowledge society, changing working
conditions and the continuous evolution of information and
communication technologies, peoples' knowledge and skills need
continuous development. Technology enhanced learning is one of the
strategic objectives of the EU/IST Work Programme, with the goal of
"improving the efficiency and cost-effectiveness of learning, for
individuals and organizations, independent of time, place and pace."
Innovative infrastructuctures, methods and approaches are needed to
reach this goal, and will facilitate transfer and sharing of
knowledge between individuals and in organisations. For e-learning,
as in e-commerce and
e-business, systemic changes wrought by emerging technologies are
also changing the relationships between consumption and production -
in this case of knowledge - as what many call 'Web 2.0' becomes more
interactive and user-generated content becomes more widespread.
The First European Conference on Technology Enhanced Learning
provides a unique forum for all research related to technology-
enhanced learning, as well as its interactions with knowledge
management, business processes and work environments. It will provide
a competitive yet broad enough forum for technology enhanced learning
research in Europe and world-wide through specialized workshops and
the main conference. The conference will provide unique networking
possibilities for participating researchers throughout the week and
include project meetings and discussions for several EU/IST projects
funded within the 6th framework program under the action line of
"Technology-
Enhanced Learning and Access to Cultural Heritage".

We define 'Intelligent Environments' as those that seamlessly incorporate the
thoughtful and insightful use of computer technology to improve and enrich
everyday life. We want to promote discussions that take a completely fresh
view of the interaction between society and technology; rethinking how
computer technology should be used in the future to maximise the benefits to
individuals and society. We look forward to receiving insightful views on the
significant research opportunities and challenges that we face, the effects on
society and the way we live our lives, the possibilities, the limitations,
what we have achieved so far and what challenges we have failed to address.
The format of the event will include refereed papers, posters, demonstrations,
workshops and panel discussions.
Keynotes speaker include:
Don Norman, François Pachet, Naoko Tosa
