Call for Papers and Announcement
SPIE/ACM MMCN 2006
Multimedia Computing and Networking 2006
Part of the IS&T/SPIE International Symposium on Electronic Imaging
In cooperation with: ACM SIG Multimedia
15-18 January 2006
San Jose Marriott and San Jose Convention Center
San Jose, CA, USA
The objective of this conference is to bring together researchers and
practitioners contributing to all facets of multimedia computing and
networking. We especially encourage full and original papers on emerging
technologies such as residential broadband networks and digital appliances,
multimedia and QoS support for 3G and ad hoc networks, multimedia in P2P
environments, sensor networks and grids, power-aware computing and
communications, mobile and fixed wireless multimedia networks and content
distribution networks. We will specially feature industrial design
experiences and showcase tools for next-generation multimedia systems and
applications. Presenters will be encouraged to make multimedia
presentations and demonstrate their solutions in person.
Papers are solicited in all areas of multimedia, including, but not
limited to:
Multimedia Networking
. home, mobile and broadband networks
. QoS control and scheduling
. push technologies, content distribution and other emerging access
technologies
. Internet data streaming, delivery and wide-area caching
. sensor networks for multimedia
. grid use for multimedia
Measurement and Modeling
. performance measurement of multimedia systems
. statistical modeling of server traffic and server software
. multimedia system simulations and benchmark comparisons
Multimedia Computing
. multimedia OS services
. power-aware systems
. video-on-demand services
. peer-to-peer media systems
. development tools
Case Studies and Applications
. entertainment and networked games
. distributed virtual reality
. multimedia authoring
Authors are invited to submit both research and industrial papers on
original, unpublished work describing current research and novel ideas in
the area of multimedia computing and networking. Papers whose contributions
are supported by experimental evaluations are strongly encouraged. Paper
submissions should not exceed 15 single-spaced, single column pages
including figures, tables, and references, using a typeface no smaller than
10 points. The full paper and a 500-word text abstract must be electronical-
ly submitted by the submission deadline. For details about the submission

===========================================================
Aug 29 - Sept 3, 2005, Schloss Dagstuhl, Germany
www.vs.inf.ethz.ch/events/dag2005/
+ + +
Wireless sensor networks and smart objects are two instances of
networked embedded sensing systems, which can perceive and control
many aspects of the real world, and which may interact with humans.
These technologies are currently receiving significant attention by
researchers, potential users, and by people interested in the
implications of the induced paradigm shift in the way we use
computers. The goal of this summer school is to
- survey the most relevant subfields
- present perspectives and underlying technologies
- identify pertinent issues and important research themes
- establish contacts among people working in the field
The intended audience are post-graduate students, PhD students, and
young researchers from universities and industrial laboratories
around the world. We expect about 60 participants.
PROGRAM
- Lectures: Usually, each day will feature lectures and discussions
around a broad theme. Three to four lectures will be presented per
day (morning and late afternoon). Lecturers include Jan Beutel,
Holger Karl, Koen Langendoen, Marc Langheinrich, Pedro J. Marron,
Friedemann Mattern, Kay Roemer, and Albrecht Schmidt.
- TinyOS Hands-On Tutorial: Participants can learn to program sensor
nodes using TinyOS. This tutorial will be given by Joe Polastre and
Rob Szewczyk, two experienced TinyOS developers and trainers.
- Participants Workshop: Some time will be reserved for a workshop
where participants can present their own work and involvement in
the field.
- Application Competition: Participants can submit their ideas about
application scenarios involving sensor networks and smart objects.
Marcelo Pias will take care of the competition.
- Excursion: One day is scheduled for an excursion and other social
activities which should help to form a community among the young
researchers.
VENUE
The summer school will take place in the relaxed and inspiring
atmosphere of Schloss Dagstuhl (Dagstuhl manor house), Germany, close

Subject: [Tccc] ACM VANET 2005 - Deadline Extended
Date: Thu, 5 May 2005 17:59:48 -0700
From: Chen-Nee Chuah <chuah(a)ece.ucdavis.edu>
To: <tccc(a)cs.columbia.edu>
In response to numerous requests, the submission deadline for
ACM VANET 2005 has been extended to May 16, 2005.
===========================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
VANET 2005
The Second ACM International Workshop on Vehicular Ad Hoc Networks
In conjunction with ACM MobiCom 2005
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
September 2, 2005
Cologne, Germany
Web site: http://www.sigmobile.org/workshops/vanet2005/
Important Dates:
Paper Submission Deadline: May 16, 2005
Notification of Acceptance: June 20, 2005
Camera-Ready Deadline: July 13, 2005
The goal of this workshop is to explore the development of wireless
vehicular ad hoc networking (VANET) technologies. Enabled by short- to
medium-range communication systems (vehicle-vehicle or
vehicle-roadside), the VANET vision includes vehicular realtime and
safety applications, sharing the wireless channel with mobile
applications from a large, decentralized array of commercial service
providers. VANET safety applications include collision and other
safety warnings. Non-safety applications include real-time traffic
congestion and routing information, high-speed tolling, mobile
infotainment, and many others.
Following the success of VANET 2004 held last year in Philadelphia,
VANET 2005, the Second ACM International Workshop on Vehicular Ad Hoc
Networks, will be held in Cologne, Germany, September 2, 2005, in
conjunction with MobiCom 2005. Authors are invited to submit papers
presenting new research related to the theory or practice of vehicular
ad hoc networks (VANET). All submissions must describe original
research, not published or currently under review for another
workshop, conference, or journal. Areas of interest include, but are
not limited to:
* Safety and commercial applications
* Protocol design (including low-power, cross-layer, etc.)
* Security and privacy
* Power control
* Multi-channel organization and operation
* Network management
* Modulation and coding
* Channel modeling
The opportunities for VANET are growing rapidly. In December 2003, the
U.S. FCC approved 75 MHz of spectrum for Dedicated Short Range
Communications (DSRC), and the resulting DSRC system is expected to be
the first wide-scale VANET in North America. In Japan, two DSRC
standards have been adopted (the ARIB STD-T75 in 2001, the ARIB
STD-T88 in 2004), and Japanese auto manufactures are working with the
Ministry of Land, Infrastructure, and Transportation in the third
phase of an ambitious Advanced Safety Vehicle project. The German
Ministry of Education and Research has sponsored the Fleetnet and
Network on Wheels projects. Throughout the world, there are many
national/international projects in government, industry, and academia
devoted to VANETs.
Creating high-performance, highly scalable, and secure VANET
technologies presents an extraordinary challenge to the wireless
research community. Yet, certain limitations commonly assumed in ad
hoc networks are mitigated in VANET. For example, VANET may marshal
ample computational and power resources. Mobility patterns are
constrained by road paths and driving speed restrictions. As opposed
to sensor networks, VANET represents high resource/performance
wireless technologies.
Submission Instructions All paper submissions will be handled
electronically. Papers must be in PDF format, no longer than 10 pages
(single- or double-column), in font no smaller than 11 points, and
must fit properly on US Letter-sized paper (8.5 inch × 11 inch) with
reasonable margins. Submitted papers will be judged based on their
quality through a double-blind review process, where the identities of
the authors are withheld from the reviewers. Detailed instructions for
paper submission will be posted on the VANET 2005 web page at
http://www.sigmobile.org/workshops/vanet2005/
Please email questions related to paper submission or the technical
program to vanet2005-pc-chairs(a)monarch.cs.rice.edu . Please email
general questions about VANET 2005 to vanet(a)path.berkeley.edu.

CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications
MOBILE ROUTERS AND NETWORK MOBILITY
http://www.argreenhouse.com/society/J-SAC/Calls/mobile_routers.html
Network mobility support is concerned with managing the mobility of an
entire network that is changing its point of attachment to the Internet
and thus its reachability in the Internet topology. If network mobility
is not explicitly supported by some mechanisms, existing sessions break
and connectivity to the global Internet is lost. A mobile network is
composed of Mobile Router(s) (MR) and Mobile Network Nodes (MNN) that
can be fixed or mobile. There has been rapid development in network
mobility support, i.e., providing Internet connectivity to the networks
that move using mobile routers since the inception of Mobile IPv4 in
1996. Seamless Internet access in public transportation such as in
trains and busses can be possible if mobile routers are used. Cars with
low-power sensors seamlessly connected to the Internet constitute yet
another example of networks which move. To date, some airline companies
announced Internet connectivity support during commercial flights and
this trend is expected to accelerate and cover most if not all flights.
This issue is focused on modeling, analysis, and simulation of network
mobility support protocols. We solicit papers presenting original and
unpublished work including, but not limited to the following topics:
* Modeling and Analysis of Network Mobility
o Modeling, analysis and simulation of mobile router
o Protocols for route optimization
o Mobility issues inside a mobile network
o Mobile IPv6 extensions for route optimization
o Nested mobile networks
o Multihomed mobile networks
o Operational issues to deploy mobile networks
o Auto-configuration for mobile networks
o Mobile router support on cellular phone platforms
* Services in the Networks that Move
o Service advertisement and discovery protocols in networks that
move
o Specifications nad models of services for network mobility
o Encryption and authentication in service access for network
mobility
* Security Issues in Network Mobility
o Security analysis of present network mobility support protocols
o Applications of AAA and EAP to network mobility
o Interaction with security-enhanced modules in other layers
(vertically) or other middle boxes (horizontally)
Prospective authors should follow the IEEE J-SAC manuscript format
described in the Information for Authors. Authors MUST submit their
draft manuscripts through the EDAS peer review website, together with a
short abstract (approximately 150 words) in the EDAS website form.
Please note potential authors should create their own accounts through
the EDAS peer review website before submitting manuscript(s). EDAS will
accept manuscripts in PDF format only. There will be one round of
reviewers and acceptance will be limited to those papers requiring only
moderate revisions. The following timetable applies:
Manuscript Submission: JUNE 1, 2005
Acceptance Notification: December 1, 2005
Final Manuscript Due: March 1, 2006
Publication: 3rd Quarter 2006
