The proliferation and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. The design of data communication techniques in multi-hop ad hoc networks has challenges at all layers of communication. This workshop concentrates on the network layer problems like data communication (routing, QoS-routing, geocasting, multicasting, broadcasting, etc.) and topology control (neighbor discovery, power adjustment, neighbor elimination, etc.). Additionally, sensor networks are currently recognized as one of the priority research areas by NSF. The area of sensor networking is gaining momentum within the researh community. This workshop will address ongoing research on this field, including problems such as: physical properties, sensor training, security through intelligent node cooperation, medium access, sensor area coverage with random and deterministic placement, object location, sensor position determination, energy efficient broadcasting and activity scheduling, routing, connectivity, data dissemination and gathering, sensor centric quality of routing, temporal message ordering, path exposure, tree reconfiguration, topology construction, and transport layer. The main paradigm shift is to apply localized (or greedy) schemes as opposed to existing protocols requiring global information. Localized algorithms are distributed algorithms where simple local node behaviour achieves a desired global objective. Localized protocols provide scalable solutions, that is, solutions for wireless networks with an arbitrary number of nodes, which is the main goal of this plan. Sensor and rooftop/mesh networks, for instance, have hundreds or thousands of nodes. The main objective of the workshop is to present state of the art research results on data communication and topology control in rapidly growing area of ad hoc and sensor networks, with emphasizes on localized techniques. Thanks. --Nirwan Wireless Technology Advances and Challenges for Telemedicine Background Telemedicine employs telecommunications to provide medical information and services via secured communication channels. Telemedicine systems can utilize well established and developing wireless technologies and standards such as various Wi-Fi based networks for the reliable delivery of medical information and provision of life-saving services. A wide range of medical applications can be supported by technological advancements in wireless communication systems in conjunction with biosensors. These systems often operate in harsh outdoor environments, especially when accidents are often caused by heavy rainfall, where the wireless communication link can be severely affected by various conditions. Under any situation, they must operate reliably at all times in order to support mission-critical services. Such diverse range of services can only be reliably supported by having the appropriate quality assurance methodology and information security in place. As a result, advancements in wireless networking technology provide a vital link to enhancing telemedicine services. Scope of Contributions We solicit papers covering various aspects of telemedicine system including, but not limited to, the following: * Wearable medical devices and sensors * Reliability and quality assurance for telemedicine * Optimization of various stages of communications systems, such as source coding and channel coding, for telemedicine * Medical data coding and compression * Biometrics for telemedicine * Standards activities in support of telemedicine * Security/privacy issues in sensor networks and the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) for telemedicine Papers should be of tutorial nature or contain state-of-the-art research and development materials.
