CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd IEEE International Workshop on Networking Issues
in Multimedia Entertainment (NIME'06)
CCNC 2006 - Satellite Workshop
January 7-10, 2006, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society
The growing availability of digital contents and the simultaneous cost
reductions in storage, processing, and networking is driving the growth
of the entertainment technology. While in the past entertainment
technology traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences,
continual advances in network and computer technologies are providing
tools for implementing greater interactivity and for enabling consumers
to enjoy more exciting experiences, such as, for example, interactive
digital TV, interactive theatre and orchestrated music and sound design.
This phenomenon is pulling together an extremely diverse group of
experts specializing in different technical areas, such as networking,
computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games, animation, multimedia
design, human-computer interaction, educational media and software
engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes
interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired
communication is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of
building a large interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum
entertainment value to millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect,
there is a great hope that the wired and wireless may take over this
complex scenario for fulfilling the consumer expectations. The second
IEEE International Workshop on Networking Issues in Multimedia
Entertainment provides an open forum for researchers, engineers and
academia to exchange the latest technical information and research
findings on next-generation networked multimedia concepts, technologies,

CFP: IEEE MHWMN'2005
The IEEE International Workshop on Heterogeneous Multi-Hop Wireless and
Mobile Networks 2005 (IEEE MHWMN'05)
To be held in conjunction with the 2nd IEEE International Conference
on Mobile Ad-hoc and Sensor Systems (IEEE MASS 2005) Washington DC, USA,
November 7-11, 2005
=========================================================================
AIM and SCOPE
-------------
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are based on
single-hop architecture and rely on the existing fixed infrastructure
such as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment
of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, and Wireless
PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power,
mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and ubiquitous
access across these various networks. Such an integrated heterogeneous
environment enables a user to access a particular network depending upon the
application needs and the types of radio access networks (RANs) available
(e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop
wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility
and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic
network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc
networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack.
Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture
and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks
(e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers
from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and
technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions
in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking
original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical
and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks.
TOPICS
------
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:

*BOUNDARIES BETWEEN LEARNING, ENJOYING AND WORKING*
People learn (only) in school, are productive (only) at work and enjoy
themselves (only) elsewhere, right? No? That's the impression often
imparted by information technology: entertainment software is distinct
from productivity tools and both differ from educational technology.
Blurring the boundaries between learning, enjoying and working will be
increasingly critical as information technology matures, becomes more
diverse and enters new dimensions of human existence. This need is
already evident, for example, in efforts to incorporate "fun" as a
design value for productivity tools, or to support understanding and
solving of real-world problems in educational technologies.
Research and design communities also reflect these boundaries, differing
in values, practices and expertise. For instance, educational designers
emphasize "reflective design" (stressing interpretation, understanding
and reasoning), whereas productivity designers emphasize "behavioral
design" (stressing use and experience), while entertainment designers
emphasize "visceral design" (stressing appearance, touch, and feel).
Development of boundary-blurring technologies will require understanding
ways and implications of crossing the boundaries in both research and
design settings.
The purpose of the workshop is to examine, systematically, opportunities
for and implications of research, design and development of integrated
technologies, and explore ways of helping designers and researchers to
cross boundaries. The objectives of the workshop are to develop an
understanding of the opportunities for, limitations of and issues raised
by blurring boundaries, and to outline a research agenda for
technologies that allow people simultaneously to learn, enjoy themselves
and be productive, and to do so across all the settings -- work, home,
play -- in which they conduct their lives.
*DISCUSSION TOPICS*
Topics for discussion will primarily be derived from participants'
suggestions and interests. However, they might include:
Implications and Opportunities for Integrated Technologies
o Are there venues for integrated technologies that are particularly
appropriate or inappropriate?
o Do integrated technologies pose special social or ethical concerns?
o What conflicts might blurring boundaries present? E.g., automating
subtasks to increase productivity vs. exposing them to increase
learning.
o Do integrated technologies introduce new or specialized
computational problems?
Benefits of Integrating Technologies
o How might research or design communities benefit from looking across
boundaries?
o What do different research and design communities have to offer each
other?
Process and Methodological Changes
o Do design processes and methodologies differ for different spheres
of purpose or types of design, and what changes are needed for
integrated technologies?
o Do research questions and methods differ by purpose or type of
design, and what changes are needed for integrated technologies?
Research Agenda
o How might viewing technology across boundaries affect research,
design and development?
o What research questions might be raised or answered by integration?
o What research questions must be answered to achieve integration?
o How can opportunities for research, design and development across
boundaries be created and supported?

*Call for Papers*
*Second Workshop on Ubiquitous Home*
*-*Ubiquitous Society and Entertainment-**
Following the International Conference on Entertainment Computing 2005
(ICEC 2005) held at Kwansei Gakuin University in Sanda, we will move to
Kyoto, the ancient capital of Japan, and there we will have Second
Workshop on Ubiquitous Home on September 21 and 22, 2005. The theme of
this year’s workshop is “Ubiquitous Society and Entertainment.”
As more and more computers have been introduced into our life and our
society, our society is rapidly changing into a ubiquitous society.
What kind of technologies will play important roles in the ubiquitous
home and/or society? What kind of new entertainment will emerge? What
will our life style be like in the ubiquitous society? What will be the
relationship between entertainment, society, and culture? It is
important for even researchers/engineers to consider and to discuss
these issues. The main topic of the workshop is technologies for the
ubiquitous home/society as well as entertainment. At the same time it
is strongly encouraged to submit interdisciplinary papers focusing on
the psychological and sociological aspect of ubiquitous home/society as
well as entertainment.
The main sponsor of the workshop, National Institute of Communications
and Technologies (NICT) cordially invites you to attend this
interdisciplinary workshop. Basically, the main part of the workshop is
complementary, but attendees should cover accommodation fee and special
event fee (optional).
*Conference Topics*
Suggested research topics include, but are not limited to:
* Key devices for ubiquitous home
* Distributed architecture of ubiquitous home
* Wearable computers and sensors for entertainment
* Pet robots and home robots
* Entertainment robots
* Network technologies for ubiquitous home/society
* Media art in ubiquitous home
* Avatars and virtual characters
