Please accept our apologies if you receive multiple copies of this announcement. ------------------------------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------- Call for Papers IEEE GLOBECOM 2005 Workshop 2nd IEEE International Workshop on Adaptive Wireless Networks (AWiN) November 28th, 2005, St. Louis, Missouri, USA http://www.ieee-globecom.org/2005// Adaptation in mobile wireless networks is motivated by several factors such as time-varying channel conditions, network traffic, mobility, resource constraints, vulnerability to attacks etc. An adaptive algorithm/protocol makes decisions for the future based solely on past and current information. These decisions could be, for example, choosing the transmission band in a spectrum agile wireless network, user scheduling and/or routing depending on link and traffic conditions, wake-up/sleep decisions in a battery constrained sensor network etc. Adaptive protocols have been observed to improve the throughput, utilization and other performance factors. The intent of this workshop is to provide a forum for researchers and practitioners to present their ideas on using adaptive/online/real-time algorithms for optimizing mobile wireless computing and networking. The topics of interest include (but not limited to): Adaptive link layer error control Dynamic spectrum access Cognitive radio Online algorithms and competitive analysis Intelligent resource allocation (e.g., battery power-aware techniques) Dynamic routing protocols Mobility based adaptation Wireless security Application layer rate control (e.g., image/video streaming) Ad hoc and sensor network applications Adaptive scheduling algorithms Adaptive cross-layer optimization Middleware support Test beds, experimentation and standards Submission Instructions: Authors must submit original, not previously published contributions via email to mouli(a)stevens.edu with subject line "AWiN Submission". Its already-high demand is even on the rise as the Internet users have started to be familiar with peer-to-peer (P2P) technologies which enable them to share contents between one another directly. Streaming in the P2P manner, in contrast to the traditional client/server approach, takes advantage of existing end-system computational and networking resources, thus allowing economical clients to leverage their collective power to benefit the entire service community. However, multimedia content is resource demanding while user computing devices are not as powerful as are content servers. Consequently, designing a good decentralized streaming scheme in a large-scale peer-to-peer environment is challenging. The problem becomes more of a challenge due to the ad hoc behavior of peers; they can leave and join the system freely at any time. As people tend to work beyond their office desk, it is also expected that the next generation of communication networks includes rapid deployments of independent mobile users. With the emergence of wireless technologies such as IEEE 802.11 and Bluetooth, mobile users are enabled to connect to each other directly without any networking infrastructure such as the Internet and infrastructure-based wireless LANs. In other words, the users form a mobile ad hoc network (MANET). As multimedia streaming becomes an integrated part of an increasing number of applications and wireless networks are emerging to dominate the communication environment of the future, it is interesting and worthwhile to investigate multimedia streaming solutions for MANETs. There are many open issues regarding this investigation due to the deviation between the resource, energy, and bandwidth availability of ad hoc networks and the quality of service desired by multimedia streaming users. This special session seeks original contributions of high-quality papers that address novel systems challenges towards the success of multimedia streaming deployment in peer-to-peer, content distribution, and wireless ad hoc networks. Additionally, WSNs are evolving from simple data transportation networks to functionally rich distributed systems, e.g., because actuators in the network have to be supported. The goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers from different backgrounds, from hardware to applications, to create a forum where cross-layer integration, novel solutions for specific problems, and the future development of WSN functionalities can be discussed. Network traffic measurements are invaluable for a wide range of tasks such as network capacity planning, traffic engineering, fault diagnosis, application and protocol performance profiling, and anomaly detection. This large and diverse set of applications raises the question of how to monitor the Internet in an efficient and scalable way. In the case of active monitoring (where probe packets are sent across the network to infer specific properties) the scalability issue arises from the size of the Internet and the potentially large number of end systems that one needs to instrument, as well as the number of probing experiments that one must conduct. Intuitively, sampling is an essential component of scalable Internet monitoring. Broadly speaking, sampling is the process of making partial observations of a system of interest, and drawing conclusions about the full behaviour of the system from these limited observations. The observation problem is concerned with minimising information loss whilst reducing the volume of collected data. It is this reduction that makes the collection process scalable. The way in which the partial information is transformed into knowledge of the system as a whole is the inversion problem. The inversion is in general imperfect and error-prone. The aim of this issue is to bring together work from researchers and practitioners devoted to the understanding of the practical and theoretical issues related to all aspects of sampling the Internet. In this context, sampling may take various forms. A classic example is to observe only a subset of the packets carried over a link, and then estimate traffic parameters which apply to all packets. Alternatively, one could target a subset of routers with packet probes in order to infer network characteristics such as the topology or routing matrix. Examples abound from a wide variety of application areas within Internet measurement, management, and analysis. Independent of subject area, papers will be in scope if they focus substantially on the sampling aspects of the problem under study, for example by exploring the tradeoff between observation and inversion processes, revealing the limitations of inversion techniques, analysing their properties, or proposing new ones, or by providing new insights by explicitly recognizing the impact of implicit sampling in many measurement studies. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g., cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks. The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile networks. A wireless sensor network (WSN) consists of a large number of inexpensive and small nodes with sensing, data processing, and communication capabilities, which are densely deployed in a region of interest and collaborate to accomplish a common task, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and industry process control. Distinguished from traditional wireless networks and ad hoc networks, WSNs are characterized of dense node deployment, unreliable sensor node, frequent topology change, and severe power, computation, and memory constraints. These unique characteristics and constraints present many new challenges to practical realization of WSNs, such as energy conservation, self-organization, fault tolerance, etc. In particular, sensor nodes are usually battery-powered and should operate without attendance for a relatively long period of time. In most cases, it is very difficult and even impossible to change or recharge batteries for these sensor nodes. For this reason, energy efficiency is of primary importance for the operational lifetime of a sensor network. To prolong the lifetime of a sensor network, energy efficiency must be considered in almost every aspect of sensor network design, not only at the physical layer but also at the link layer and the network layer. From the networking perspective, energy efficiency must be considered in the design of various network protocols and algorithms, including those for topology discovery, self-organization, medium access control, routing, data aggregation, fault-tolerance, etc. An energy-efficient network protocol or algorithm can provide significant power savings in individual sensor nodes and thus prolong the lifetime of the entire network. However, most existing network protocols and algorithms for traditional wireless ad hoc networks cannot effectively address the power constraint and other constraints of sensor networks. To realize the vision of sensor networks, it is imperative to develop various energy-efficient network protocols and algorithms in order to efficiently use the limited power in each sensor node and prolong the lifetime of the network. The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that focus on energy-efficient network protocols and algorithms for WSNs. We are soliciting original contributions that were previously unpublished and are currently not under consideration by any other journal.
