One of the main challenges to the operations of first responders and critical infrastructures is to deploy a communication network that is dependable, secure, and rapidly deployable. In order to operate effectively, the deployed network supports services such as location determination, audio and video communication, and in site and remote sensing. Another key feature for first responders and critical infrastructures networks is to support interactions among multiple heterogen- eous networks. This workshop provides a forum for researchers, industry, and government agencies to discuss the challenges facing the design, deployment and operation- al issues for next generation network support for first responders and critical infrastructure. The SOSP PC reserves the right to ask authors to provide copies of related simultaneously-submitted papers. Submissions will be done electronically. Therefore, in recent years a growing number of effective solutions for problems related to networked systems have been proposed by taking inspiration from the observation of natural systems and processes such as natural selection, insect societies, immune systems, cultural systems, collective behaviors of groups of animals/cells, etc. The aim of the workshop is to provide a forum to present the cutting edge research on Nature-inspired approaches to network-related problems. The workshop sought to provide a deep insight into the effective potentialities of Nature-inspired design to tackle the numerous problems arising in networked systems, and, in particular, in modern telecommunication networks. ------------------------------------ Areas of Interests and Contributions ------------------------------------ EvoCOMNET 2007 solicits contributions dealing with the application of ideas from natural processes and systems to the solution of problems of practical and/or theoretical interests in all domains related to the analysis, design, control, management, protection, and testing of network systems. The 7th International Conference on Next Generation Teletraffic and Wired/Wireless Advanced Networking NEW2AN 2007 http://www.new2an.org/ September 3 - 7, 2007 St.Petersburg, Russia CALL FOR PAPERS About the Conference Next-generation mobile networks will evolve out of existing wired and wireless networks of different nature by means of convergence, fusion and mutual penetration; next-generation multimedia services in turn pose new requirements and challenges on treatment of traffic within communication networks. This forms a framework on harmonization of results obtained separately in different areas of network research like network performance evaluation, architecture and protocol design, and low layer network design. The conference goal is in the identification, investigation and integration of new algorithms, approaches, architectures, methods and mechanisms to enable proper and efficient operation of a next-generation IP-based wireless network. Special emphasis will be given to next-generation traffic issues, it indeed remains true that much uncertainty surrounds the future traffic features and volumes, mainly because of converged type of traffic resulted from converged network operation under converged services and applications. Moreover, wireless access networks and their interaction shall be widely examined and addressed throughout the conference. Since the middle of the 1990s a sequence of seminars and conferences sponsored by International Teletraffic Congress (ITC) have been successfully organized in Saint-Petersburg. In addition to regular papers, we also solicit submissions of position papers articulating high-level architectural visions, describing challenging future directions, or critiquing current design wisdom. Along with the widespread adoption of broadband residential access and the increasing demand of multimedia service over the Internet, we are now witnessing the emergence of a new class of popular P2P applications, namely, P2P audio and video streaming. Popular P2P video streaming applications have successfully demonstrated the support of thousands of concurrent peers per channel at bit rates in excess of 400 kbps. While traditional P2P file distribution applications are targeted for elastic data transfers, P2P streaming focuses on the efficient delivery of audio and video content under tight timing requirements. Still in its infancy, both live and on-demand P2P streaming present many research challenges. To date, a number of architectures have been suggested by using either the tree-based push approach (e.g., Narada and SplitStream) or the mesh-based pull approach (e.g., CoolStream) which basically divides the media content into blocks for trading among peers. Further improvements are possible by taking advantage of advanced source and channel coding techniques such as layered coding, multiple description codes, fountain codes, and network coding. Given the initial success of P2P live streaming, questions still remain about how to extend the existing peer-to-peer models for more advanced applications with more stringent requirements such as video-on-demand services and how to support live and on-demand streaming in the same P2P network. Furthermore, with the wide deployment of wireless networks (WLAN, ad hoc, and 3G networks) and various wireless backhaul technologies (wireless mesh networks and WiMax), there are still open research challenges on how to realize a large-scale P2P media streaming over highly dynamic wireless channels and with user mobility. This special issue solicits original state-of-the-art works addressing all aspects related to supporting peer-to-peer multimedia content distribution service from both theoretical and implementation aspects. It aims at putting together a collection of the latest high-quality research results in this area.
