CALL FOR PAPER
The Fourth Workshop on Wireless Ad hoc and Sensor Networks (WWASN2007)
in conjunction with the International Conference
on Distributed Computing Systems (IEEE ICDCS 2007)
Monday, June 25, 2007 in Toronto, ON, Canada
http://www.cs.umanitoba.ca/~softart/WWASN2007.html
CONFERENCE THEME
This workshop covers the area of ad hoc and sensor networking,
from physical issues to applications aspects. In particular,
it will cover physical, data link, network and transport layers,
as well as applications, security, simulation and power management
issues in sensor, local area, personal, and mobile ad hoc networks.
Among the goals of the workshop is to review ad hoc and sensor
network protocols and models, and to reflect the latest advances
in the state of the art in modeling, design, and deployment of
such networks.
Typical topics include (but not limited to):
Key communication abstractions for ad hoc and sensor networks
Topology construction and maintenance
Physical, media access, and routing layers
Routing, broadcasting and multicasting
Energy-efficient protocols
Quality of service in medium access control and routing
Fault tolerance and redundancy schemes
IEEE 802.11 and 802.15.x-based medium access control
Hybrid networks and wireless internet
Models for analysis, performance assessment, mobility, and validation
models
Methods and tools for ad hoc and sensor networks simulation
Heterogeneous networks and challenges in analyzing and designing them
Pervasive and wearable computing
Security, trust, and other security-related issues
Data management issues, query processing, and data delivery
Applications and history of ad hoc and sensor networks
IMPORTANT DATES
Manuscript Submission: December 15, 2006
Acceptance Notification: February 10, 2006
Final Manuscript Due at IEEE: around March 15, 2006
SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS
Papers should be submitted via email to program chairs. Papers should
be submitted in PDF format, using either the IEEE Computer Society
proceedings format (two column, 10 point, single-spaced) or a
single-column, 12 point, at least 1.5 line spacing format. There are
no page lenth restrictions on the length of submitted papers, but note
that the paper length for accepted papers will be limited; the exact
details to be determined later. (For your guidance, last year's limit
was 6 pages in the IEEE CS proceedings format.) Number each page in
the manuscript. Include an abstract, five to ten keywords, the technical
area(s) most relevant to your paper, and the corresponding author's
e-mail address. Accepted papers will be published by IEEE Computer
Society Press as part of the proceedings of ICDCS'2007 workshops,
provided that each paper has at least one accompanying registration.

Call for Papers - IEEE Communications Magazine
Feature Topic on Peer-to-Peer Multimedia Streaming
In recent years, peer-to-peer (p2p) multimedia streaming has aroused much
interest both in research communities and in industries. By allowing peers
serving each other in the network, p2p technology overcomes many
limitations in traditional client-server paradigm to achieve user and
bandwidth scalabilities. It has been shown that performance of a
properly-designed p2p network actually improves, rather than deteriorates,
with the increase of population size. Peer-to-Peer technology is promising
for large content distribution as demonstrated by a number of
proof-of-concept prototypes in both academia and companies.
In a p2p multimedia streaming system, multimedia contents are delivered to
a large pool of distributed users with low delay, high quality and high
robustness. Fueled by advances in networking and compression technologies,
p2p multimedia streaming has experienced much initial deployment success
for applications such as Internet TV (IPTV), video conferencing, and
surveillance. It is the key to address the emerging needs of large-scale
digital IPTV, interactive videos, interactive games and other
next-generation broadcast-based or personalized multimedia services. A
scalable peer-to-peer multimedia system should support many hosts,
possibly in excess of hundreds or even millions, with diverse
heterogeneity in bandwidth, capability, storage, network, and mobility. It
should also be able to support various applications under dynamic user
arrival and departure, frequent host failures and unavailability, and
unpredictable user behaviors, network traffic and congestion. In a p2p
streaming networks, users should be able to share, search, and access
contents in a distributed and efficient manner. To achieve these goals, it
is particularly important to address the challenges in architecture
design, network/transport support, resource discovery and content delivery
mechanisms.
Scope of Contributions
This feature issue is devoted to original surveys and tutorials on these
emerging issues in P2P streaming. Authors are invited to submit complete
unpublished original articles that are not under review in any other
conference or journal. Topics of interest include, but not limited to the
following:
Peer-to-peer media distribution, systems and infrastructures
Novel peer-to-peer streaming applications and services
Overlay networks and application-level multicast for media streaming
Robustness in peer-to-peer streaming networks
Scalability, reliability, accessibility, manageability, and availability
for P2P streaming systems
Resource discovery and location in peer-to-peer streaming
Performance measurement and monitoring of peer-to-peer streaming systems
Deployment experience and application of peer-to-peer media distribution
systems
Peer-to-peer streaming prototypes and their implementation
Reputation, trust and incentives in peer-to-peer streaming systems
Peer-to-peer based content distribution
Business models for P2P media distribution
Mobile P2P streaming
Schedule
Submission Deadline: November 15th, 2006 <===========

Call for Papers
IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
Special Issue on "Medium Access Control Protocols for Wireless LANs"
The field of Wireless Local Area Networks (WLANs) is experiencing a
tremendous growth in the last years. One of the key points is the design
of performance-efficient WLANs. However, there are fundamental
differences between wireless and wired LANs that pose difficulties in
the design of medium-access control (MAC) protocols for WLANs. WLANs
utilize wireless transmission for information exchange, which is
characterized by bit-error rates (BER) having an order of magnitude even
up to ten orders of the magnitude of wired transmission. Furthermore, in
WLANs, errors occur in bursts. Moreover, a fully connected topology
between the nodes of a WLAN cannot be assumed due to the inherent
mobility of WLAN nodes. Thus, WLANs are characterized by unreliable
links between nodes, resulting in bursts of errors and dynamically
changing network topologies. These problems obviously impact both the
performance of a WLAN and its ability to support QoS applications.
Desired properties for a WLAN MAC that have been identified in the
literature include the following:
* Throughput. The capacity of WLANs should ideally approach that of
their wired counterparts. This should be done by efficiently utilizing
the scarce spectrum resource.
* Dynamic topology. In a WLAN, fully connected topologies cannot be
assumed. A WLAN MAC should take this issue into consideration.
* Number of nodes. WLANs often need to support tens or hundreds of
nodes. Therefore the WLAN MAC should pose no limit to the network's
maximum number of nodes.
* Interference and Reliability. Interference, (due to collisions,
"hidden terminal" problem, collocated network operation or wireless
medium unreliability) should not degrade the reliability of data transport.
* Robustness-Security. In a WLAN, the transmission range of a station
cannot be confided in a certain geographical area. Thus, WLANs are more
prone to security attacks and eavesdropping. This should be taken into
account by the MAC.
* Power Consumption. Wireless devices are power-limited as they are
typically battery powered. Therefore, energy-efficient MACs are
desirable. This may result in a tradeoff between performance and energy
efficiency.
* Quality of Service. In today’s wireless networks, there is a great
need for QoS, because of the time-bounded voice, audio and video
traffic, which have to be efficiently transmitted along with the
traditional data traffic.
This special issue aims at providing a timely and concise,
tutorial-oriented reference of the current activities and new findings
in the field of WLAN MACs. In this context, papers are solicited
reporting on representative topics regarding new and innovative MAC
protocols. Such protocols should not be based upon or improve already
proposed work (especially the work addressing the IEEE 802.11 MAC), but
should constitute an advancement by widening the field of eligible MAC
protocols for future WLANs. Topics of interest include, but are not
limited to, the following list:
* MAC for multimedia applications over WLANs
* Energy efficient WLAN MACs
* WLAN MACs with QoS support
* Adaptive WLAN MACs
* Power controlled WLAN MACs
* Directional/adaptive antenna WLAN MACs
* MACs for multihop WLANs
* Standardization activities
* Performance studies of WLAN MACs.
Submitted papers, which should not be considered elsewhere for
publication, should be of tutorial in nature and the authors must follow
the IEEE Wireless Communications guidelines for preparation of the
manuscripts. For further details, potential authors should refer to
"Information for Authors" in IEEE Wireless Communications website at
http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. Papers should have
no more than 4500 words, a total of 6 figures and tables, 15 references
and 3 simple equations. Please send PDF (preferred), Microsoft Word, or
PostScript formatted papers to Mohammad S. Obaidat
(obaidat(a)monmouth.edu) or Petros Nicopolitidis (petros(a)csd.auth.gr) no
later than 28 February 2007.

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION
==============================
CALL FOR PAPERS
Distributed sensor systems have become a highly active research area due
to their potential for providing diverse new capabilities. Such systems
allow intelligent dense monitoring of physical environments, which makes
them immensely useful for data collection and analysis. While much
ongoing research has addressed networking, communication and low-level
self-configuration issues in such systems, there are also significant
challenges pertaining to systematic design, algorithm development and
analysis, and abstract modeling in order to achieve efficient and robust
realizations of large-scale distributed sensor systems. The large number
of sensor devices involved, severe power, computational and memory
limitations, resource heterogeneity, dense deployment and frequent
failures pose novel challenges to design, algorithms, analysis and
implementation.
The focus of the conference is on distributed computing issues in
large-scale networked sensor systems (including algorithms, applications,
and systematic design techniques and tools), but networking-related
contributions that support high level abstractions are also welcome.
Authors are invited to submit original unpublished manuscripts that
demonstrate current research on computational aspects of distributed
sensor systems. Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Computation and programming models
- Energy models, minimization, awareness
- Distributed algorithms for collaborative information processing
- Theoretical performance analysis: complexity, correctness,
scalability, fault-tolerance
- Abstractions for modular design
- Languages, operating systems
