Call For Papers
Feature Topic on Wireless Mesh Networks
IEEE Communications Magazine
http://www.comsoc.org/dl/commag/cfpcommag307.htm
Next generation communication networks are facing the challenge
of providing adaptive, flexible, and reconfigurable architectures
capable of catering to the dynamics of the network, while providing
cost effective solutions for service providers. Wireless mesh
networking (WMN) has emerged as a promising concept to meet such
challenges of next generation networking. In WMN, no cabling is needed
to connect the routers together. All routers self-organise and
auto-configure themselves wirelessly, and form a rich radio mesh
connectivity among themselves that is difficult to provision in wired
networks. While wireless router connectivity significantly reduces the
up-front deployment and subsequent maintenance costs, the rich mesh
connectivity helps delivering high level of reliability and robustness.
Due to these attractive features, WMN is being considered for a wide
variety of application scenarios such as backhaul connectivity for
cellular radio access networks, high-speed metropolitan area mobile
networks, community networking, building automation, intelligent
transport system networks, defence systems, and city-wide surveillance
systems. Despite significant advances in the last few years, many
challenging research issues, such as sharp drop in available throughput
as the number of wireless hop increases, remains to be resolved.
Industry, academia, and standard bodies are all actively working
together on bringing this technology to its maturity.
The aim of this Feature Topic is to feature the recent advances in
theory and application of wireless mesh network. Articles from both
academia and industry are solicited. Topics of interests include,
but are not limited to:
- Throughput enhancing techniques for paths with many wireless hops
- Latency reduction techniques
- Multipath routing in wireless mesh networks
- Advanced antenna technologies
- Manageability and interoperability issues
- Self organization and network configuration
- Test-bed design, experimental results, implementation and prototypes
- Novel application and deployment scenarios
- Standardisation activities (e.g. IEEE 802.11s)
- Security architectures and protocols for wireless mesh networks
- Mobile mesh networks

Multimedia System Journal (published by the Springer Verlag, and
sponsored by the ACM SIGMM)
Special Issue on: Collaborative Haptic Audio Visual Environments and Systems
Multimedia and Information technology are reaching limits in terms of
what can be done in multimedia applications with only sight and sound.
The next critical step is to bring the sense of “touch” over network
connections, which is commonly known as Tele-haptics. Haptics, a term
which was derived from the Greek verb “haptesthai” meaning “to touch”,
introduces the sense of touch and force into the human-computer
interaction. Virtual Environments (VE) are usually referred to as
computer generated 3D worlds wherein users can interact through various
human-computer interfaces and experience the so called “virtual world”.
Collaborative Virtual Environments (CVE) are VEs that, in addition to
the virtual experience, provide the ability for users to collaborate,
such as co-manipulation of shared objects and tele-mentoring. A special
case of a CVE is the collaborative haptic virtual environment (C-HAVE)
where, in addition to traditional multimedia such as image, audio, and
video, this new haptic media plays an important role. C-HAVEs allow
multiple users, each with his/her haptic device, to collaboratively
manipulate shared objects in a virtual environment. The potential of
such technology is quite significant for many applications such as
tele-presence, tele-learning, tele-medicine, tele-operation in hazardous
environments, industrial design and testing, gaming, and interactive
virtual reality.
This particular special issue will target articles related to the
directions and advances made on the scientific, engineering, and
commercial fronts for C-HAVEs. Some potential topics relative to this
special issue include:
* Perception of Haptic systems
* Architecture of C-HAVE systems
* Haptic-based input/output methods and user-environment interactions
* Cross-disciplinary collaborative Haptic applications
* Medical C-HAVEs, such as tele-surgery training or tele-medicine
* Tele-operation of robots/vehicles in C-HAVEs
* Issues in the design of cross-cultural collaborative virtual environments
* Haptic as a new media for Internet Gaming

CALL FOR PAPERS
DIWANS 2006
2nd Workshop on Dependability Issues
in Wireless Ad Hoc Networks and Sensor Networks
URL: http://www.iit.cnr.it/~diwans06/
Sponsored by ACM SIGMOBILE
In participation with
IEEE Technical Committee on Fault-Tolerant Computing
To be held in conjunction with MobiCom 2006
(12th ACM International Conference on Mobile Computing and Networking)
September 25, 2006
Los Angeles, California USA
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Submission Deadline Extended!!!: June 30, 2006
------------------------------------------------------------------------
MOTIVATION AND THEME
Widespread proliferation of wireless RF technology has brought the
possibility of infrastructureless networking to the forefront.
Infrastructureless networks include both wireless ad hoc
networks and sensor networks as important classes. Dependability
issues such as reliability, availability, quality of service and
security are made more challenging by the wireless and
infrastructureless environment. Reliability and availability
challenges include the varying characteristics of a wireless channel,
which is subject to interference, fading, and multipath effects.
General quality of service mechanisms become even more important due
to bandwidth and other resource limitations. Challanges such as
dealing with partitioned operation have led to new research areas
such as delay-tolerant networking. The presence of mobile nodes in
many of these settings complicates further the dependability issues.
Clearly, these dependability challenges must be met before the full
promise of ad hoc and sensor networks can be realized.
GOAL AND TOPICS
The main goal of this workshop is to bring together researchers to
focus exclusively on the important topic of dependability issues in
ad hoc and sensor networks, to outline its specific and unique
research challenges, and to identify some of the most promising
candidate solution methods and techniques to address those challenges.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Adaptive network protocols
- Distributed algorithms for dependability
- Network lifetime modeling and evaluation
- Impact of mobility on dependability
- Dependability case studies
- QoS adaptation
- Fault-tolerant and/or secure routing
- Dependability techniques for resource constrained environments
- Space-time routing
- Network-level techniques for mitigating unreliable wireless links
- Countering denial of service and energy-draining attacks
- Dependable and secure services
- Coverage and connectivity problems
- Security against physical attacks
- Data availability and consistency
- Error-tolerant data aggregation in sensor networks
- Handling network partitions
- Delay-tolerant networking
- Mobility-assisted routing

2nd IEEE International Workshop on Heterogeneous Multi-Hop Wireless and
Mobile Networks 2006 (IEEE MHWMN'06)
Website: http://www.ececs.uc.edu/~qzeng/MHWMN2006/CFP.htm
In conjunction with IEEE MASS 2006 (www.ieee-mass.org), Vancouver,
Canada, October 9-12, 2006
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
AIM and SCOPE
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks
are based on single-hop architecture and rely on the existing fixed
infrastructure such as base stations or access points. The proliferation
and deployment of radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless
LANs, and Wireless PANs with distinguishing characteristics of data rate,
coverage range, power, mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need
for seamless and ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an
integrated heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular
network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio access
networks (RANs) available (e.g., cellular network, ad hoc, WLAN, WPAN
etc). The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile networks, on the
other hand, provide unlimited mobility and greater flexibility but
introduce a number of challenges due to dynamic network topology. The
design of efficient and scalable protocols for existing multi-hop wireless
and mobile networks such as wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue
to pose challenges at all the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is
necessary to investigate a global heterogeneous architecture and services
that together provide seamless integration of single-hop networks (e.g.,
cellular, WLAN, WWAN) and multi-hop mobile ad hoc networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum for
discussion and technical presentations on the latest research and future
research directions in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless and mobile
networks. We are seeking original and previously unpublished research
papers addressing theoretical and application issues in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless mobile networks.
TOPICS
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following areas:
Multi-hop architectures and protocols for resource management

Peer-to-peer computing has quite conspicuously emerged as one of the
most innovation rich areas in computer networking. P2P has emerged out
of user community but it is increasingly finding its base on rich
foundation of computing.
Various aspects of peer-to-peer systems are now being modeled,
formalized, and even engineered based on distributed hashing, complex
search models, self-organization, complex networking, and graph theories.
The objective of this special issue of the Journal of Computer &
Communication is to highlight recent innovative research results which
will strengthen the formal foundation of this area.
________________________________________
The special issue invites papers from diverse P2P community ranging from
practitioners, system builders, networking researchers, computing
engineers, as well as social scientists. Authors from these divergent
communities are encouraged to submit high-quality and original works.
The review process of this special issue will be respectful to the
difference in the scientific methodologies used by the communities.
Topics of particular interest include but are not limited to the following:
P2P systems, practice & performance
• Case study architectures
• Performance analysis of existing systems
• Distributed hashing, routing, advanced & special search
• Self-organization neighborhood optimization
• Fault tolerance, stability, churning
