Journal of Visual Communication and Image Representation Special Issue: Resource-Aware Adaptive Video Streaming Modern multimedia applications such as mobile television, movie on demand, IPTV, multiview video, distributed video conferencing, streaming and gaming over wired and wireless networks have stimulated research for new technologies in the area of multimedia architectures, processing, and networking. Current communications networks exhibit a wide range of capabilities, including various architectures, throughputs, quality of service and protocols; interconnection of different networks provides several advantages, but also poses major technical challenges. On the other hand, users employ heterogeneous terminals with a wide range of computational and display capabilities, energy resources, features, accessibilities, and user preferences. The variety of possible scenarios has escalated the need for efficient and effective techniques for streaming and adapting compressed videos in such heterogeneous environments. Considerable amounts of research activities in industry and academia have been devoted to developing the enabling technologies that are needed to make this vision reality. The goal of this special issue is to provide an up-to-date picture of state-of-the-art research in the field of video streaming, emphasizing the two key aspects of adaptation and resource-awareness. Adaptability has been described as a characteristic of autonomous behavior and is often related to possessing learning capabilities through analysis of past behaviors and interactions. Adaptability has been intensely studied by various areas of engineering including artificial intelligence, control systems and human centered systems. Adaptability has been set as an important requirement for systems devised to work in new generation global networked and distributed environments like wireless networks, P2P networks, Web systems, multi-agent systems, grids, etc. Such systems are expected to pose new challenges for the development and application of adaptation techniques, due to their special characteristics including: interconnectivity, interactivity, distribution, heterogeneity and fault-tolerance. It encompasses ad hoc radio networks, sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to the industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4, 802.16j, etc. Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative communications and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field. The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability of other nodes or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the delay caused by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well as coverage extension of plain radio networks. Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many researchers are noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants, birds, and fish, trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team of robots with their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate each other, sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this respect, wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot information exchange. The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless multihop communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to meet and exchange their ideas. Papers must be submitted electronically. The maximum size of papers should be 5000 words including tables and figures, according to the formatting standard for a 12-page manuscript of Springer-Verlag LNCS. The cover page must contain an abstract of about 150 words, 3-5 keywords, name and affiliation of author(s) as well as the corresponding author's e-mail and postal address. Best, Andrew ==== Call for papers Special issue of IEEE Network Magazine on Composable context aware services Wireless networks are revolutionizing the world around us. Imagine going about your day, only carrying a small mobile “companion” device. Your companion is small but the world around you is replete with a variety of displays, IO peripherals, sensors, and storage devices. As you near these resources, your companion “borrows” some of them and instantly morphs itself into a full fledged computer. All this happens without the hassles of wires, with utmost simplicity, and robust security. Beyond connectivity, your companion knows you, understands your preferences, tracks your calendar, and even learns your habits. It's capable of taking actions appropriate to your current situations, with little or no inputs from you. The device provides uses that you need and makes use of what is around to provide a higher-level of computing experience. Scope of special issue The purpose of this special issue will be to present a landscape of the state-of-the-art in research and practice of networking for composable context aware computing and connectivity. This special issue will present a collection of articles which discuss (a) high-level software, applications, and middleware that are needed to create and support composable services, (b) design of network protocols and software stacks for automatic composition, (c) the impact of context awareness to simplify network configuration, and (d) Implications for network system architecture and design. Papers should bridge the gap from academic research to early experience or deployment of monitoring infrastructure as embedded network management entities. In particular, papers must fit the target audience of IEEE Network and, therefore, have content that has tutorial value and be comprehensive. Submissions should preferably address one of the following topics: Topics of interest include · High-level software and applications needed to support and provide composable services · Security and privacy issues in the context of composable services · Middleware infrastructure needed to bridge the gap between connectivity provided by underlying network protocols and high-level software that creates composable services. · Communication protocols and architectures for device ensembles/collection of devices (set up, discovery, performance optimizations) · Security architectures for device introduction and setup · Wireless device composition – system architecture, design, and implications of communications of wireless devices for such environments (except the physical layer aspects of such devices such as antenna design) · Integration of location awareness into communications stack and mobility · Application of context-based inferencing to adapt in the presence of accessibility to multiple communication networks · Architecture and structure of applications that use collaborative network sensing to create context-aware applications · Challenges and solutions in constructing applications that can dynamically compose and provide a service based on the resources available in the immediate vicinity · Novel approaches to network management and operation esp. in the context of mobile, wireless networks · System architecture tradeoffs of communication vs computation to support a variety of devices and form factors in the composable/context aware environments · Implications of context awareness to WPAN-, WLAN-, WMAN- and cellular-based networks · Sensory issues such as composing or inferring user context from multiple sensor data Manuscript submission Authors must submit their manuscript (single column, double-spaced) electronically in PDF format by email to Raj Yavatkar (raj.yavatkar(a)intel.com) before the deadline.
