Special issue on "Collaboration and Optimization for Multimedia
Communications"
===============================================================================
The advances of internet and wireless access technologies have opened up
new opportunities to serve high quality, on-demand multimedia
applications. Applications like mobile TV, IPTV, on-demand streaming,
and peer-to-peer video sharing have fundamentally changed the content
distribution landscape, and have been accelerating a social and
engineering revolution in media distribution and consumption.
To achieve the ultimate goals of total freedom in self-expression,
seamless mobile access, and any time anywhere media consumption,
technology advances in various areas need to be reexamined and joined
utilized under a coherent optimization framework to reach an efficient
end-to-end media delivery solution. New models, metrics, and
methodologies in both source, and channel coding, distributed and
collaborative communications are needed to intelligently adapt the
multimedia content to suit user preferences, meet device and network
constraints, and achieve better communication resource utilization. The
source coding and adaptation decisions of media sources need to be
reconciled with the limited network resources, end-user preferences, and
resource allocation schemes at network nodes. Distributed optimization
schemes like pricing and game theoretical approaches are needed to
improve resource allocation and management efficiency.
This special issue seeks original contributions of highquality papers
that report the recent advances in multimedia coding, adaptation, and
transmission approaches that support multiuser collaboration and
optimize the network performance for multimedia communications. Topics
of interest include but are not limited to:
* Source/channel coding/adaptation techniques for increasing the
elasticity of multimedia traffic
* Collaborative multicast schemes utilizing source and channel
diversity for efficient multimedia distribution
* Distributed resource allocation and management for multimedia
communication
* Network utility maximization based on collaborative multimedia
communication
* Pricing models for collaborative multimedia transmission
* Game theoretical models for multimedia contents interactions

Scope
-----
Recent advances in the wireless communications and networking
technologies will significantly impact the design of automobiles to
make automobile operations safer and more efficient, and thereby,
result in significant progress in the evolution of Intelligent
Transportation Systems (ITS). The Dedicated Short Range Communications
(DSRC) band has been allocated in the USA at 5.9 GHz for vehicle-to-
roadside (V2R) and vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communications, while the
IEEE 802.11p working group is developing enhancements of 802.11
standards to support ITS, vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs),
vehicular telematics, and infotainment applications. It is anticipated
that a single wireless access technology may not suit the needs of all
vehicular communication applications, but a heterogeneous wireless
networking platform needs to be developed and optimized. Numerous
exciting research challenges exist for designing wireless networking
protocols for vehicular communication applications. Significant
advancements in these research areas are expected in near future.
The objectives of this workshop are to discuss the challenges in
designing wireless networking protocols for vehicular networks and
ITS, different ITS applications and services based on wireless
communications and networking technologies, and present the recent
advances in these areas.
With the objective and a very timely topic, the workshop is expected
to attract lot of interest from the researchers in the area of
wireless communication networks as well as from ITS designers and
planners.
The technical issues which will be addressed in this workshop include
- Vehicular wireless communications applications and services for
ITS
- Vehicular telematics based on emerging wireless technologies
- Multimedia content distribution in vehicular networks
- Architectures for V2R communications
- Heterogeneous wireless network architecture for V2V and V2R
communications
- Physical, medium access control , radio link, and routing protocols
- Cross-layer wireless protocol analysis, design, and optimization for
vehicular networks
- Cognitive radio protocols for vehicular networks
- Security protocols for vehicular networks
- Privacy issues in vehicular networks
- Vehicular network management
- Performance modeling and simulation
- Field experiments and test-bed results
Accepted papers will be published in the ACM International Conference
Proceedings Series and will be made available in ACM Digital Library,
as well as indexed by EI and ISI Index.

technology both for entertainment and serious games.
The journal is a peer-reviewed full "Open Access" journal, i.e., the
journal enables
world-wide, barrier-free, online access to the full text of published
research articles.
All interested readers can read, download, and/or print any articles
without requiring
a subscription to the journal. In addition, we allow our open access
authors to retain
their own copyright as long as they sign a Creative Commons Attribution
License, which
allows readers to freely access, print and redistribute an article as
long as it is
properly cited.
The journal has distinguished editorial board members with extensive
academic
qualifications, ensuring that the journal will maintain high scientific
standards
and have a broad international coverage.
Another important aspect is the review and publication speed of the
journal since
the publisher's electronic Manuscript Tracking System (MTS), which is
located at
http://www.hindawi.com/mts/, helps reduce the review time significantly.
We are
then aiming for an average publication time of a few weeks following
acceptance.
Furthermore, the articles of the journal are now published on an
accelerated
article-by-article basis to reduce the publication delay of accepted
manuscripts.
I would like to take this opportunity to invite you to submit your
research paper
to the journal and maximize the readership and impact of your research.
For more
information about the journal, please visit the following URL:
http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijcgt/ .
Please don't hesitate to contact me if you have any questions about the
journal.
Many thanks and best regards.
Sincerely yours,
Prof. Edmond Prakash

3rd International Mobile Multimedia Communications Conference
(M O B I M E D I A 2 0 0 7)
Supported by ACM, EURASIP
Nafpaktos, Greece, August 27 - 29, 2007
http://www.mobimedia.org
SCOPE
The successful development of multimedia services and applications in
mobile environments requires adopting an interdisciplinary approach where
both multimedia and networking issues are addressed jointly. Multimedia
semantic characteristics, Human Interpretation of audiovisual information,
extraction and usage of semantic information, coding standards and its
interaction with networking, mobility and security protocols are research
issues that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions.
Many are the applications that will be enabled by the new standards for
mobile networking, such as triple services for mobile networks, digital
television, video streaming, interactive gaming, navigation services,
context aware services, and immersive communications in virtual
environments. The efficient delivery of multimedia applications and
services over emerging diverse and heterogeneous wireless networks is a
challenging research objective. The research effort for the 3G/4G vision
of interworking among heterogeneous technologies to achieve multimedia
session continuity, retain multimedia QoS characteristics etc., amplifies
the need to evaluate the conditions and restrictions under which delivery
of such services can be accomplished.
Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international
forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia
coding, and mobile networking fields to study new applications, solutions,
and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can
improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient
technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia
applications.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Multimedia semantic characteristics in wireless, mobile and ubiquitous
environments
* Multimedia QoS in wireless networks
* Extraction and usage of semantic information
* Performance evaluation of multimedia services
* Multimedia Retrieval in wireless and mobile environments
* Mechanisms supporting triple-play services in emerging wireless
networks
* Scalable Coding of multimedia in wireless and mobile networks
* Cross-Layer techniques for multimedia communications over wireless
networks
* Joint source-channel coding
* Multimedia services over ad-hoc and wireless sensor networks
* Rate Control and Adaptation for wireless multimedia
* P2P multimedia streaming in wireless and mobile networks
* Transport protocols for multimedia in emerging wireless networks
* Mobile Content Delivery Networks
