Betreff: [Tccc] CoNEXT'07 Student Workshop News: Deadline EXTENSION and
ACM Digital Library

Due to several requests, we have EXTENDED the deadline for abstract
registration and paper submission to the CoNEXT 2007 Student Workshop
from September 28th 2007, to OCTOBER 1st 2007 (5pm EDT).
==============================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
CoNEXT 2007 Student Workshop
Columbia University, New York, USA http://edas.info/W.php?page=21
===============================================
* NEW * The best posters will be published in the ACM Digital
Library.
The CoNEXT 2007 Student Workshop, following in the footsteps of the
well received CoNEXT'06 Student Workshop, aims to provide a platform for
graduate students in the areas of computer networks and data
communication to publicize their ongoing research work through posters,
obtain feedback and learn what problems are being tackled by fellow
students. More importantly, it also provides a venue for them to
"network" with their peers and established network researchers, obtain
valuable guidance tips in the form of informative panels and participate
in a forum designed specifically to benefit graduate students. We
invite submission of 1-2 page abstracts from graduate students worldwide
describing their ongoing research work for potential presentation at
the CoNEXT 2007 Student Workshop. As always, research work that
addresses "non-standard/controversial" problems and approaches are
particularly encouraged (even if they are only in a nascent stage).
Selected abstracts will appear in the CoNEXT 2007 proceedings and the
related posters displayed in the workshop program. A few selected "top
posters" will be recommended for publication in the ACM Digital Library.
IMPORTANT : Several student travel grants, courtesy of NSF, Cisco and
Thomson, will be provided to selected candidates to attend the CoNEXT
2007 Student Workshop and main conference in New York.

IAMCOM 2008
Workshop on Intelligent Networking: Adaptation, Communication, and
Reconfiguration
January 10, 2008. Bangalore, India
http://www.iamcom.org
Paper submission deadline: 10 October, 2007, Friday Midnight, CET
Workshop co-Sponsored by:
IEEE Communications Society (www.comsoc.org <http://www.comsoc.org>)
CreateNet (www.create-net.it <http://www.create-net.it>)
[held in conjunction with IEEE/ACM conference COMSWARE 2008,
with a large participation from industries and government labs]
*******************************************************************
SCOPE
======
The topic of assured communications between the application end-points
in a distributed embedded system is quite important for the military,
automotive, aerospace, and E-Commerce domains. It synergizes three
sub-areas of research: adaptation of system operations to the network
resources & environment conditions, reliable communications between
end-points in the presence of failures, and self-reconfigurations at
various system levels for increased resilience. The topic has spurred
the need for Intelligent Networking at various layers of the system
architecture to support these critical functionalities.
IAMCOM 2008 will thus offer a unique and focused forum for researchers
from academia, government and industry to share ideas and disseminate
new results in this important area..
*******************************************************************
CALL FOR PAPERS
===============
Intelligent Networking has become popular in the context of distributed
embedded systems for aerospace, automotive, military, E-commerce, and
eco-surveillance applications. Unlike the telecom-centric networks of
the 90's that had an inward focus on network signaling & control today's
intelligent networks are designed from an application perspective. Here,
networks could mean a set of collaborative data processing nodes that
serve as application proxies ( e.g., airborne nodes in a police
surveillance network).
The goal of contemporary Intelligent Networking is to improve
application-level reliability & performance, security, QoS assurance,
and the like. The need for intelligent networking arises because the
target application systems are too complex to be studied in isolation. A
holistic approach to design that addresses both application and network,
can result in performance gains. Often, mathematical models and/or
closed-form representations of target application systems do not exist
or are too unwieldy to allow offline analysis. For instance, network
outages can have a profound impact on the application reliability in
many military applications, but can be tolerated in certain commercial
application domains. The mapping relationship between the network events
and the application activities are deeply buried in the system
operations, with no apparent mechanism for the system designers to track
these cross-layer relationships.
The complex nature of modern day embedded systems applications provides
a new dimension to the concept of intelligent networking --- and hence
opens a set of new research directions. This new dimension covers three
aspects: adaptation to resources & environment, reliable communications
between nodes, and reconfigurations at various system levels. The
purpose of this workshop is to provide a forum for the presentation of
ongoing work in embedded systems control & management pertaining to the
three pillars of adaptation, communication, and reconfiguration. Papers
are solicited on the following topics:
1.QoS assurance architectures
2.Network state fusion, monitoring
3.Utility-based QoS adaptation
4.Vehicular network security
5.Capacity provisioning
6.Survivable links: restoration & routing
7.Dynamic resource allocations
8.Distributed management & control
9.Self-healing networks
10.Cross-layer approaches in system design
11.'Control-Theoretic' approaches to performance management
12.Embedded systems applications --- aerospace, automotive, military &
sensor networks
13.Latency-sensitive data streaming & fusion
14.Service-level specification & verification
15.Energy-aware wireless operations
16.QoS stability in wireless networks
17.MAC-layer optimizations in wireless networks
18.Incentive based QoS models for wireless networks
19.Reliable communications in vehicular networks: Emergency Response
20.GPS based location & tracking
21.Location-sensitive data fusion
Accepted papers will be published in the workshop proceedings and

Call for Papers
The First IEEE International Workshop on Opportunistic Networking (WON-08)
to be held in conjunction with The IEEE 22th International Conference
on Advanced Information Networking and Applications (AINA-08),
GinoWan, Okinawa, Japan, Mar 25-28, 2008
http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/WON08/
==================================================================
Aims and Scope
---------------
With the explosive deployment of mobile wireless devices recently,
Opportunistic Networking is becoming an increasingly popular area in
networking research, in which the assumption of having end-to-end
paths between the source and the destination is relaxed. Such networks
fall into the fields of mobile ad-hoc networking (MANET) and
delay-tolerant networking (DTN).Opportunistic Networks enable user
communication in an environment where disconnection and reconnection
are common and link performance is extremely dynamic. They are very
suitable to support the situation where network infrastructure has
limited coverage and users have "islands of connectivity". By taking
advantage of device mobility, information can be stored and forwarded
over a wireless link when connection 'opportunities' arise (e.g. an
appropriate network contact is met). In this view, traditional
Internet connectivity can be considered as a special case of
connection opportunity. With numerous emerging applications,
Opportunistic Networks allow a huge number of devices to communicate
end-to-end without requiring any pre-existing infrastructure and are
very suitable to support pervasive networking scenarios.
Topics of Interest
-----------------
Original papers addressing applications and architecture, systems
and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas related
to Opportunistic Networking are solicited. Papers that bring out
interesting and novel ideas at an early stage are favored over
highly-polish journal-style results. Topics of interest include, but
are not limited to:
* Advanced technologies for enabling opportunistic communication
* Architectures for opportunistic networks
* Applications for opportunistic networks
* Biological and social models for opportunistic communication
* Middleware services in opportunistic networks
* Dissemination and replication techniques for opportunistic networks
* Network and resource management techniques for opportunistic networks
* Trust and cooperation in opportunistic networks
* Security issues in opportunistic networks
* Transport and reliability issues in opportunistic networks
* Routing issues in opportunistic networks
* MAC layer issues and physical layer for opportunistic networks
* Simulation and modeling of Opportunistic networks
* Tools and techniques for designing, analyzing and building
opportunistic networks
* Opportunistic networks testbeds and measurements

Call for Papers
The wireless multihop communication has been one of key research issues in
recent
years both in academia and wireless industry. It encompasses ad hoc radio
networks,
sensor networks, wireless mesh networks and mobile multihop relay related to
the
industrial and standardization activities such as IEEE 802.11s, 802.15.4,
802.16j, etc.
Further the multihop communications can be combined with cooperative
communications
and network coding, which attracted more researchers in this field.
The idea behind such multihop communications is to utilize the availability
of other nodes
or to borrow their transmission capability. This in many cases exceeds the
delay caused
by the multihop relay, the gain from which is capacity enhancement as well
as coverage
extension of plain radio networks.
Now we turn our attention to the robotics area. In these days, many
researchers are
noticing group behaviors found in small insects or animals such as ants,
birds, and fish,
trying to realize such behaviors into the control and coordination of a team
of robots with
their local interaction. The multiple (usually small) robots communicate
each other,
sharing the same mission, naturally through wireless communications. In this
respect,
wireless multihop communication is an excellent candidate for inter-robot
information
exchange.
The main idea of this workshop is to bridge the above two areas (wireless
multihop
communications and networked robotics) by opening a place for researchers to
meet
and exchange their ideas. The workshop welcomes submissions on all aspects
of the
themes, which include (but not limited to) the following topics:
- Communication architecture for collaborative robot systems
- Biologically inspired swarm robotics with networking functionality
- Multiple robot networking with mutihop- and cooperative communications
- Network coding and wireless relay technologies for cooperative robotics
- Learning and adaptation in cooperative environments
- Applications of multi-robot network systems
- Ad hoc robot networks
- Cognitive communication technologies for inter-robot team work
- Exploiting robot mobility in wireless relay networks
- QoS support in networked robotics
- Wireless multihop networks under node mobility

CALL FOR PAPERS - WONS 2008
The Fifth International Conference on Wireless
On-demand Network Systems and Services
January 24-25, 2008. Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Germany
http://www.tm.uka.de/wons2008
----------------------------------------------------------------------
Scope of the conference
-----------------------
With the increasing variety of wireless technologies, ubiquitous
connectivity and service provisioning more and more complements
traditional, infrastructure-based cellular networks. WLANs, WiMax,
Mobile Ad-hoc networks as well as vehicular networks and sensor
networks are popular examples. The goal is to provide services "on
demand" with minimal planning and management effort as well as with
little dependency on existing network infrastructures.
On-demand provisioning of services in such infrastructure-less
environments is a challenge in itself. Methods for self-organisation
are strongly required to enable this vision. Other challenges are
posed by the architectures suited for different networks and
applications (e.g., specialized architectures for sensor networks)
also raising issues with respect to interoperability.
WONS is now at its fifth edition and is still confronted with new
technical challenges and new application demands. As such it provides
a premier forum for high quality paper presentations and lively
discussions.
For this conference we request submissions of high quality research
papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on
protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation,
pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical
implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of
wireless networks.
Topics related to wireless ad hoc networks, mesh networks, vehicular
networks and sensor networks comprise, but are not limited to: *
Architecture and Design * Analysis through simulation and experimental
evaluation * Modeling * Internet integration * Social and economic
aspects * Pervasive / ubiquitous computing * Localization and mobility
management * Security * Energy-efficient protocols and power
management * Applications and Service Support * Data dissemination
and Peer-to-Peer systems * Middleware aspects * Self-X and network
management
Manuscript submissions
----------------------
Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere nor currently
be under review by another conference or journal. Authors are invited
to submit double-column full (8 pages) and short papers (4 pages) in
PDF format having a font size no smaller than 10pt. Short papers
should present future research directions, ongoing work, visionary,
innovative ideas. Further submission instructions will be published on
the conference web site.

********************* CALL FOR PAPERS ********************
IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine
Special Issue on
"Practical aspects of mobility in
wireless self-organizing networks"
**********************************************************
Wireless and mobile computing advanced significantly in
the last decade. In particular, we now face the
possibility to spontaneously establish wireless self-
organizing networks, such as ad hoc, disruption-tolerant,
sensor, and wireless mesh networks. These spontaneous
self-organizing networks have been the focus of intensive
research activity in recent years. Spontaneous networks
arise from the cooperation of mobile devices in an ad hoc
fashion requiring no previous infrastructure in
place. A key point to couple research and real-life
applications in this context is to understand how mobility
(of devices, users, and applications) impacts practical
networking aspects.
The knowledge accumulated so far in the area of wireless
self-organizing networks is in general supported by either
simulation or theoretical analysis relying on strong
assumptions. The research community needs a step forward
and should definitely consider real aspects of mobility in
their protocols and algorithms. Such a situation is to be
compared with the one found for infrastructure-based
networks (e.g., cellular networks), in which mobility has
been thoroughly investigated (both theoretically and
through measurements) and properly incorporated in their
management architecture. In wireless self-organizing
networks, contrary to common belief, much is still to be
done in this domain, and definitive solutions are still
to emerge.
Mobility can no longer be seen as an issue to be hidden
from higher layers of the protocol stack, but as an
expected characteristic of today's communication systems.
In this context, it is of utmost importance to address
issues related to the impact of mobility as seen in
practice, covering characterization, modeling, and
applications of mobility in modern wireless networks. The
research community working on wireless self-organizing
networks has recently started giving more attention to
the practical mobility issues in this area. This may be
attested by the increasing number of initiatives worldwide
like the many measurement campaigns and the considerable
body of developed theoretical background work supported by
practical arguments (e.g., mobility models, mobility
increasing network capacity, relationship between node
mobility and wireless channel conditions).
The goal of this special issue is to help filling this gap
by presenting contributions ranging from the impact of
mobility on self-organizing networks to mobility-aware
architectures for self-organizing networks. As we intend
to focus on the practical impacts of mobility in wireless
self-organizing networks, papers presenting insights from
the applicability of mobility measurements and realistic
mobility models in this context are also expected. We will
be particularly interested in contributions that explore
mobility to improve the behavior of network protocols and
algorithms.
We are soliciting papers covering, but not limited to, the
following topics:
* Mobility-aware architectures for self-organizing
networks.
* Impact of mobility on self-organizing networks.
* Practical applicability of wireless testbeds and
mobility measurements.
* Realistic mobility models for self-organizing networks.
* Mobility-centric killer applications.

HotMobile 2008
The Ninth Workshop on
Mobile Computing, Systems and Applications
Silverado Resort, Napa Valley, CA, USA
February 25-26, 2008
http://www.cs.umass.edu/hotmobile2008
+-------------------------------------------------------------+
HotMobile 2008, the Ninth Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and
Applications continues the series of highly selective, interactive
workshops focused on mobile applications, systems, and environments,
as well as their underlying state-of-the-art technologies. HotMobile's
small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing
new directions or controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on
applications and systems and that propose new directions of research,
advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate
controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers
containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although
papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility
are also welcome:
* Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing
* Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices
* Novel applications and environments supporting mobility
* HCI issues related to mobile computing
* Security and privacy of mobile computing
* Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility
Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they
focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system
or application.
HotMobile 2008 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be
judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and
likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop.
To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be
limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo
proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register
on a space-available basis.
Paper submissions are due on Oct 16, 2007 at 23:59:59 EST.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format.
Papers should be single column using 12pt font. The conference proceedings
will be published by the ACM. Preliminary proceedings will be made available
to workshop participants online ahead of the workshop. Printed proceedings
will be published and mailed to participants after the workshop.
As is customary, papers must not have been published elsewhere and may not
be simultaneously under submission at another venue.
Poster and demo submissions are due on January 14th, 2008 at 23:59:59 EST.
Submissions must include an extended abstract limited to one
8.5x11-inch page in 12pt font.
The important dates, as well as the organizing and program committee
members are listed below.
We look forward to seeing you at HotMobile 2008.
Sincerely,
Alex Varshavsky <walex(a)cs.toronto.edu>
