Call for Papers
PRESTO'08: Workshop on
Programmable Routers for Extensible Services of TOmorrow
August 22, 2008
Co-located with ACM SIGCOMM 2008 in Seattle, WA, USA.
http://www.sigcomm.org/sigcomm2008/workshops/presto/
Recently, there has been renewed interest in the networking
research community in re-architecting the distribution of
functions in an IP network. These efforts can be described
as a dis-aggregation of router functionality into various
components and well-defined interfaces, to enable deployment
of richer services and easier management of the network.
In addition, researchers and practitioners in industry have
been exploring the notion of open routers, which allows new
functionality to be easily added into routers, as well as
exploring router virtualization as a way to support a diverse
set of applications and users. These efforts span the range
from building open-source routing software, to making
routers third-party-developer friendly by exposing
router APIs, as recent industry announcements indicate.
Programmable network elements hold the promise of accelerating
innovation and service deployment. At the same time
programmability could exacerbate already challenging network
management tasks. This workshop will provide a forum
for the exchange of ideas between researchers and industry
practitioners with a goal of driving service innovation in IP
networks using novel extensible router architectures.
Specific areas of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Architectures for open/programmable network elements,
including transport, wireless and packet forwarding devices.
- Abstractions for open/programmable network elements.
(Programmability versus extendible configuration. Is programmability
really needed? How close to the 'metal' should programmability be?
E.g., do-it-yourself versus open APIs. )
- Efficient and flexible data plane programmability. (E.g.,
firmware versus multi-core platforms.)
- Cross-layer aware programmability.
- Network element virtualization.
- Network composition, configuration and provisioning in
virtualized environments.
- Architectures, services and/or service features enabled by
programmability.
- The impact of programmability on network management and
operations.
The workshop solicits original papers on completed work, position
papers, and/or work-in-progress papers on the challenges raised
above. Papers that bring out new and interesting approaches at an
early stage of their development are very welcome.
Instructions for Authors

3rd IEEE Workshop on advanced EXPerimental activities ON WIRELESS networks &
systems --- EXPONWIRELESS 2008

in conjunction with IEEE WoWMoM 2008 (http://wowmom08.ics.uci.edu/)
CALL FOR PAPERS
---------------
Wireless networks represent a challenging and ever growing research area. In
these systems
the interactions among the different network layers are very complex and
their effects on
the overall performance are not easy to accurately identify. Additionally,
many simplifying
assumptions considered in analytical studies do not hold in practise.
Experimental activities
involving the development of systems and device prototypes and the
collection and analysis
of measurements from actual networks can provide insight on the behaviour of
such systems
in realistic environments, which can be beneficial for understanding how
cross-layer
interactions impact in practise the overall performance, for deriving
realistic simulation
models, for analyzing particular phenomena and evaluating algorithms and
protocols, and for
exploring the design choices in building actual wireless networks. Such
activities are
pivotal for researchers, developers, service managers and providers, as well
as for end users
involved in the evolution of these networks.
After successful events in the last years, EXPONWIRELESS 2008 aims to again
bring
together all the aspects related to experimental activities on wireless
networks,
creating a forum where researchers, vendors, providers and users can
exchange ideas on
past experience, current requirements, and future visions, that are
important for the
development of new protocols, algorithms, devices and systems.
High quality papers discussing original and innovative experimental
activities
on wireless networks are solicited for submission. The main topics of the
workshop
are (but are not limited to):
* Algorithms for self-configuration and self-management of beyond-3G systems
* Deployment and experience with multi-radio multi-channel wireless mesh
networks
* Device prototypes for wireless BANs, PANs, LANs, and MANs
* Differentiated services in wireless multimedia networks
* Energy-efficient protocols and power management algorithms
* Experiences/lessons from recent wireless testbed deployments
* Handoff and mobility management in beyond-3G systems
* Location-aware services
* Middleware platforms for wireless/mobile environments
* Mobility models of wireless/mobile networks and systems
* Positioning and tracking technologies
* Power control and channel assignment
* Prototype implementation of wireless/mobile networks and systems
* QoS for real-time voice/video in wireless networks
* Seamless internetworking and architectures for beyond 3G systems
* Systems and methods for collecting and analyzing measurements in wireless
networks
* Security and privacy issues in wireless networks
* Wireless/Mobile applications and services (e.g., vehicular networks,
underwater networks, opportunistic networks, etc.)
PAPER SUBMISSION AND PUBLICATION
--------------------------------
Submitted manuscripts should adhere to the IEEE double-column standard
format with
10pt font size for texts. Authors should use only standard fonts, i.e.,
Times Roman,
Courier, Symbol, and Helvetica, or equivalent. The maximum length of
the manuscript is 5 pages. This limit includes figures, appendix,
bibliography,
etc. Papers significantly exceeding this limit will be automatically
rejected. All
papers must be submitted in PDF format using the ISAS Conference Manager
http://nrl.iis.sinica.edu.tw/EXPONWIRELESS08/ISAS/ . Any question can be
