CALL FOR PAPERS 1st International DisCoTec Workshop on Context-aware Adaptation Mechanisms for Pervasive and Ubiquitous Services Tuesday 3rd June 2008 Oslo, Norway http://discotec08.ifi.uio.no/Campus08 Overview. There is a huge market potential for mobile applications in Europe today. Most people already carry a mobile device of some sort wherever they go, and an increasingly diverse set of devices (PDAs, smart phones, GPS, etc.) are becoming widely available. Recently, service- orientations (e.g., OSGi) have evolved to address these highly dynamic environments. However, it is still technically difficult, using existing method and tool supports, to create such services-oriented applications. For example, the very large range of devices, types of infrastructure, ways in which it can change, situations in which users can find themselves, and the functions they want, introduce great complexity and pose considerable technical challenges. To overcome these difficulties, and promote the development and widespread deployment of innovative mobile applications, more and more projects are addressing the development of context-aware adaptation mechanisms for leveraging the development of mobile applications. These projects aims at providing simple but powerful integrated approaches to support the development of applications interacting in pervasive and ubiquitous environments. Thus, the CAMPUS workshop will focus on the promising approaches in the domain of context-aware adaptation mechanisms supporting the dynamic evolution of the execution context (e.g., network/device/service failures). Research Topics The workshop will address an extensive set of topics related to adaptation mechanisms for context-aware services. The following contributions will be particularly welcome:- Context-awareness mechanisms for distributed systems: - How to capture the relevant contextual properties of a distributed system? - How to support the distribution of the context information in an efficient manner? - How to enforce the security and privacy issues for context data? - How to describe ontologies for context management? - How to map context-awareness to situation-awareness using context reasoning? - Adaptation mechanisms for distributed systems: - How to represent the adaptation knowledge of a distributed system? - How to reason about pieces of software that need to be adapted in a distributed manner? - How to reconfigure a distributed system with respect to the dynamic nature of the environment? - How to deal with anticipated versus unanticipated adaptation? - How to integrate human/computer interaction issues in adaptive systems? - How to ensure robustness and transactional adaptations? - Innovative applications of context-awareness and adaptation mechanisms: - Experiences in developing context-aware and adaptive applications and services, - Testing and validation of adaptive applications and services, - Development methodology for adaptive applications and services, - Tool support for context-aware adaptation mechanisms and adaptive services, - Design of platforms and infrastructures supporting context-aware adaptation mechanisms, - New domains of applications for context-aware and adaptive applications and services. Important dates Paper Submission: March 20, 2008 Paper Notification: May 01, 2008 Camera Ready: May 15, 2008 Workshop: June 03, 2008 Workshop Format The workshop will be organised as a one-day event, consisting of a series of sessions, each devoted to the presentation of papers belonging to a common domain. Each session will end with a mini-panel between the presenters, led by the session chair or a pre-selected devilâEUR^(TM)s advocate. This format has been found to lead to lively and productive discussions. The workshop will include a special session for the presentation of posters and demos of ongoing research efforts and software prototypes. The workshop will conclude with a panel, moderated by one of the organizers, to discuss open issues and future trends in the field, with the aim of wrapping up the overall contributions of the event. Submission & Publication Selection of workshop participants will be based on the submission of a paper, poster or demo. Moreover, other participants may be invited by the organizing committee. Thus, the CAMPUS program committee seeks: - Technical papers, describing concrete results achieved, in no more than 12 pages (EASST style), - Position papers, describing on-going work and interim results, in no more than 6 pages (EASST style). Papers will be peer-reviewed, and selected based on their originality, technical strenght and topical relevance. 1st Workshop on Urban Networks and Applications (UNA 08) Lakeshore Hotel, Hsinchu, Taiwan, August 4-6, 2008 http://una.cs.ucc.ie held in conjunction with the 13th IEEE Asia-Pacific Computer Systems Architecture Conference http://www.ccrc.nthu.edu.tw/acsac2008 Urban settings are host of diverse networking technologies, from cellular and wired broadband to WiMAX, WiFi, Bluetooth and, more recently, mesh and sensor networks. While this rich environment offers opportunities for connectivity, inter-operability and sharing of services and resources, the co-existence of these heterogeneous technologies, competing for the same resources and offering similar services, poses difficult engineering and legal problems. For example, network planning is a major issue that can determine the effective use of each network and, when possible, inter-operability of the networks. Cities administrations are keen to deploy and take advantage of public service networks, whereas citizens are interested to use public or private services at home, at work or while driving or walking. Private initiatives may selectively focus on certain niche services. Overall, urban networks can increase the quality of life in cities and can make the distinction among cities. In achieving this goal, many technical challenges have to be tackled. This workshop will be a forum for discussion of new and interdisciplinary ideas on new architectures, paradigms, concepts, service models and novel applications for urban networks. The topics for submission include but are not limited to: cognitive radio technologies congestion control micro- and pico-cell control architecture hybrid cell configuration sensor networks in urban settings personal area networks vehicular networks mesh networks mobile ad hoc networks networks planning networks inter-operability data mining of a large volume of data in urban networks database support for urban networks network and service discovery mobility supporting services context awareness mobile middleware ubiquitous and urban computing urban network systems and applications locative media and applications access, security and privacy in urban networks Submissions Both research and industry papers are solicited. Submitted papers should be original, unpublished work and not currently under review for any other conference or journal. Papers reporting work in progress are welcome. Questions about the submission process should be directed to the workshop chair. All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed by members of the international program committee. Accepted papers will appear in the Proceedings of ACSAC 2008, which is to be published by the IEEE Computer Society Press. [Apologies for multiple postings] 1st CALL FOR PAPERS IEEE PIMRC 2008 - VoIP Technologies Workshop VoIP Technology: Research and Standards for reliable applications http://www.cs.uoi.gr/~voippimrc08/ Aim of the workshop ------------------------ The trend to all IP-based networks has been fuelled by the Internet’s flexibility that allows the development of innovative services. In this context, the integration of heterogeneous infrastructures as well as applications is of paramount importance. Voice over IP (VoIP), also referred to as Internet or IP telephony, is an example of application that brings the well-known circuit-switched service to the context of IP-based networks. Over the last years, VoIP has received the wide acceptance of users and network operators due to its countless benefits. While users enjoy the flexibility and the monetary savings that VoIP provides, service providers take advantage of its cost-effectiveness. Although VoIP has evolved rapidly, recent advances provide new opportunities for meeting numerous daunting challenges for reaching the quality of traditional telephony service. To this end, he VoIP community is taking advantage of new networking technologies (i.e., WiMAX, Wireless Mesh networks, overlay networks, etc) and innovative design trends and technologies (i.e., cross-layer architectures, QoS advances, network coding, etc). The aim of this workshop is to serve as a forum for scientists and engineers from academia, industry as well as from regulatory and standardization authorities, where they could share recent advances and design trends in VoIP technology. Topics of Interest ------------------------ The aim of this Workshop is to cover a wide spectrum of topics related to VoIP communications, ranging from QoS mechanisms to the design and performance evaluation of different VoIP components. Original papers are solicited that present research, development and deployment issues and challenges, as well as experimental results and applications in the area of Internet Telephony. Different type of semantic characteristics of media, human interpretation of audiovisual information, coding standards and interaction with networking, mobility and security protocols are research issues that need to be carefully examined when proposing new solutions. The efficient delivery and deployment of multimedia applications and services over emerging diverse and heterogeneous wireless networks is a challenging research objective. The research efforts e.g. for the 3G/4G and 3G LTE visions of interworking among heterogeneous technologies to achieve multimedia session continuity, retain multimedia QoS characteristics etc., amplifies the need to evaluate the conditions and restrictions under which delivery of such services can be accomplished. The demand for eff! icient multimedia communications can be also seen as one of main driving forces towards the Future Internet and Post-IP solutions. The interoperability of applications, transport and network protocols and radio access, as well as the demand for improved quality of service and user experience, security and mobility support creates a challenging study field and also possibilities for research of novel communication protocols and methods towards the Future Internet. In addition for the technical challenges caused by the increased amount of multimedia usage and delivery through different community services, peer-to-peer networks, Web, Internet IPTV etc. the multimedia delivery is also affecting to industry value chains, commerce transactions between businesses (B2B), and business and customers (B2C). Within this scope, MobiMedia is intended to provide a unique international forum for researchers from industry and academia, working in multimedia coding and mobile networking fiel! ds to study new applications, solutions, and standards. Original unpublished contributions are solicited that can improve the knowledge and practice in the integrated design of efficient technologies and the relevant provision of advanced mobile multimedia applications. Submissions of proposals on workshops and special sessions on emerging topics are invited Paper submission and publication -------------------------------- MobiMedia 2008 invites manuscripts that present original materials not previously published in, or currently under review by, another conference or journal. Submissions should be full-length papers of up to 7 pages (including all figures and references) formatted according to ACM publication template. Full-length papers should report on completed work and will be considered for oral presentations. A separate abstract of no longer than 200 words should be submitted as well. Submissions will be judged by their originality, significance, interest, clarity, relevance, and correctness. Accepted papers will be published in the ACM International Conference Proceedings Series and will be made available in ACM Digital Library, as well as indexed by EI and ISI Index. Poster sessions and demonstrations ---------------------------------- MobiMedia 2008 invites the poster and demonstration session parallel with the main conference event. These short papers should report on work in progress or discuss open problems, and will be considered for poster presentations. A maximum of 4 page proposal for poster/demonstration presentation for the session should be submitted to the Poster Session co-chairs. One important environment for this diffusion is the domestic environment, or Oikos as it was known in ancient Greece. Peoples’ living environments are particularly important when one takes into account the world’s aging population and the fact that as people grow older they are increasingly relying on technology. People will however, have differing levels of computer knowledge and assisted living needs. As a result of these differences the first key area of PETRA is: how to build pervasive technologies for assistive environments that are non-intrusive and easy to use for the end user. The second key area is the technology, as it is now increasingly possible to assist people who have health care needs in their homes by using sensors, databases, personal area networks, ubiquitous connectivity, distributed intelligence and adaptive easy to use interfaces and interactions. However in order to provide such support it is necessary to combine efforts from many areas of engineering and computer science e.g. security, embedded systems, distributed systems, data management and networking.
