In this scenario, mobile multimedia is expected to be one of the key services of future wireless mobile networks. Meanwhile, recent advances in digital communications have paved the way to a variety of standards aimed at providing multimedia services over terrestrial broadband networks. To cite but a few, DVB-H, T-DVB, T-DMB, wireless LANs, and wireless MANs are some of the most recent standards enabling such technology. Iterative decoding techniques for both source, channel, and joint source-channel coding and decoding and cross-layering techniques have proven to be very effective for providing a viable means of achieving capacity-approaching performance at very reduced computational burden. The main aim of this special issue is to highlight state-of-the-art techniques on the most recent research advances enabling digital multimedia services over broadband wireless networks, focused on physical and cross-layering solutions. Novel contributions, previously unpublished, that are not being submitted to any other journal, are sought. Ad hoc wireless networks allow anywhere, anytime network connectivity with complete lack of control, ownership, and regulatory influence. The last few years have witnessed a wealth of research ideas on ad hoc and sensor networks that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. Such networks can be randomly and rapidly deployed and reconfigured and easily tailored to specific applications including entertainment, civilian, military, etc. Moreover, an ad hoc architecture is highly robust to node failure and can provide a high-level of fault tolerance due to nodal redundancy and its distributed nature. Furthermore, energy efficiency can be achieved through multi-hop routing communication. Bandwidth reuse can also benefit from dividing the single long range hop to multiple short hops with each hop having a shorter range. Several challenges face are standing in the way to achieving ubiquitous deployment of ad hoc and sensor networks. These include variable topology, device heterogeneity, limited power supply and the lack of effective energy-efficient design, lack of QoS and application support, etc. This symposium aims at providing a forum for sharing ideas among researchers and practitioners working on state-of-the-art solutions to the challenges above. We are seeking papers that describe original and unpublished contributions addressing various aspects of ad hoc and sensor networks. MSWiM is an international forum dedicated to high level discussion of Wireless and Mobile systems, networks, algorithms and applications, with an emphasis on rigorous performance evaluation. MSWiM is a highly selective conference that is recognized as one of the most prestigious sources of innovative ideas and breakthroughs in the field. MSWiM 2008 will be held October 27-31, 2008, in beautiful Vancouver, British Columbia in Canada. Authors are encouraged to submit full papers presenting new research related to the theory or practice of all aspects of modeling, analysis and simulation of mobile and wireless systems. Submitted papers must not have been published elsewhere nor currently be under review by another conference or journal. Through the use of mobile devices embedded in the surrounding physical environment, users can be provided with transparent computing and communication services at all times and in all places. The complexity of providing such services stems from the fact that the communication devices and the objects with which they interact may both be mobile. Their implementation requires advances in wireless network technologies and devices, development of infrastructures supporting cognitive environments, discovery and identification of ubiquitous computing applications and services, and an understanding of the cross-layer interactions between all of these components. The Fifth Annual International Conference on Mobile and Ubiquitous Systems: Computing, Networking and Services (MobiQuitous 2008) will provide a forum where practitioners and researchers coming from many areas involved in ubiquitous solutions design and deployment will be able to interact and exchange experiences needed to build successful ubiquitous systems. Areas addressed by the conference include systems, applications, service-oriented computing, middleware, networking, agents, data management and services, all with special focus on mobility and ubiquitous computing. TOPICS OF INTEREST Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference or journal, are solicited. Technical papers clearly identifying how the specific contributions fit to an overall working system are particularly of interest. Topics include, but are not limited to, the following: - Ubiquitous architectures, systems and applications - Wearable computing and personal area networks - Wireless technologies (Bluetooth, ZigBee, 802.15.x, WiFi, WiMAX) - Wireless Internet access in ubiquitous systems - Ad hoc and sensor network support for ubiquitous computing - Reconfigurability and personalization of wireless networks - Wireless/mobile service management and delivery - Security, privacy and social issues of mobile and ubiquitous systems - Service and knowledge discovery, matching and composition mechanisms - Location-based services and tracking in ubiquitous environments - Context- and location-aware applications - Agent technologies in ubiquitous, wearable, and mobile systems - Context modeling, services and frameworks - Toolkits, testbeds, development environments, and languages for ubiquitous computing - Rapid prototyping of ubiquitous applications - Ontologies for mobile and ubiquitous computing - Mobile and ubiquitous data management and processing - Data replication, migration and dissemination in ubiquitous environments - Queries, transactions and workflows in mobile and ubiquitous environments - Multimodal interfaces (speech, video kinetic, tactile) SUBMISSION INSTRUCTIONS Paper submission will be handled electronically (see the conference web page for details). Authors should prepare an Adobe Acrobat PDF version of their full paper. Papers must not exceed 10 pages double column (US Letter size, 8.5 x 11 inches) including text, figures and references. The font size must be at least 10 points. PUBLICATION All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed by the international technical program committee. Accepted papers will be published in the conference proceedings. Papers of particular merit will be proposed for publication in the ACM/Kluwer Mobile Networks and Applications (MONET) journal. WORKSHOPS Several workshops will be run in conjunction with the conference. The purpose of these workshops is to discuss work in progress and explore opportunities for new research related to mobile and ubiquitous systems. Proposals for workshops should be at most four pages in length and should be submitted to the workshop co-chairs by March 1, 2008.
