Workshop on
Real-Time Online Interactive Applications (ROIA) on the GRID
at the
Euro-Par 2008,
Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Island/Spain, August 26-29, 2008
http://www.gup.uni-linz.ac.at/roia
Through recent advancements in network technology, graphics cards, and
displays a new type of applications - real-time online interactive
applications (ROIAs) - has become more and more popular.
Everyday life has been affected and transformed not only by the use of
web technology, but also by collaborative multimedia applications,
networked computer games, cooperative scientific visualisations,
networked virtual environments and real-time graphical displays. Users
dislocated all over the globe are enabled to work with a variety of
tools and graphical user interfaces to communicate and jointly solve
problems using sophisticated graphical interfaces. Computer-Supported
Cooperative Work (CSCW) is a hot topic which will most likely increase
the impact on ROIAs. The grid and its technologies is known to provide a
sophisticated basis for ROIAs and collaborative work.
This event encourages paper submissions concerning the application and
usage of real-time online Gird applications, as well as the technologies
supporting them in scientific and industrial context. Authors are
expected to emphasize the benefits of their real-time online
applications for human users with focus on up-to-date characteristics of
hard-, soft and middleware aspects.
This workshop offers the possibility to discuss the different approaches
Real-Time Online Interactive Applications (ROIA) on the GRID and
supportive technologies, to show the latest results, products, or
research prototypes to potential users, and to establish connections
between developers and users of associated technologies.
The following areas and related topics are of interest:
* Interactive grid tools and environments
* Development of associated parallel and distributed computing
solutions
* Integration of networking and grid computing technology
* Gaming approaches on the Grid
* Approaches using novel interaction techniques
* E-learning applications using Grid technology
* Requirement studies for future Grid tools
* Evaluation of existing ROIAs and practical experiences
Paper Submission:
--------------------
We invite you to submit an extended abstract of 1 page (A4), describing
new and original results, for oral presentation. Submission implies the
willingness of one of the authors to register and present the described
work.
After the presentation at the workshop a paper for the workshop
proceedings is to be prepared by the authors. The submitted paper must

[Tccc] CFP: Special Issue on Secure Multimedia Communication (deadline: 30 May)
by Yan ZHANG 07 May '08
by Yan ZHANG 07 May '08
07 May '08
[Apologize if you receive multiple copies of this CFP]
Wiley Journal: Security and Communication Network (SCN)
Call for Paper
Special Issue: Secure Multimedia Communication
Background
==========
With the rapid progress in information technology and an enormous amount of
media appearing over Internet, e.g. text, audio, speech, music, image and
video, guaranteeing information security is becoming increasingly
important. Several pivotal challenges include copyright protection,
integrity verification, authentication, and access control etc. As a
consequence, the subject of security protection in multimedia communication
has attracted intensive research activities in academia, industry and also
government.
Multimedia data like images, audios or videos are different from plain
text. They are often of large volumes and are compressed in order to save
the storage cost and bandwidth. Due to such requirement and property, the
media protection mechanisms for images, audios or videos are significantly
different from the ones for text or binary data. With the recent advances
in network and multimedia technology, the applications in commercial
scenario become increasing crucial. There is an increasing trend in the
multimedia content distribution from the central service provider to the
individuals, e.g. video-on-demand, IPTV and p2p sharing. In these
applications, piracy is becoming a critical issue. Solutions are needed to
protect the copyright of multimedia content. During the past decades,
schemes have been reported for secure multimedia communication, e.g., key
management, multimedia encryption, authentication, digital watermarking,
digital fingerprinting, access control and digital rights management. These
techniques are able to protect multimedia content's confidentiality,
integrity, ownership, traitor traceability. In addition, in different
networks such as Internet, 3G wireless, DVB-H and p2p, different secure
protocols and algorithms are required to provide the system security. All
these topics are in active development.
This special issue aims to expose the readership of SCN to the latest
research results on secure multimedia communication. The issue focuses on
secure transmission or distribution of multimedia content.

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue on Service-oriented Computing
Praxis der Informationsverarbeitung und Kommunikation
Fachzeitschrift für den Einsatz von Informationssystemen
SCOPE OF THE SPECIAL ISSUE
A recent trend in software and enterprise engineering is Service-oriented
Computing (SOC), which can be used to design and develop complex and distributed
systems. The core concept of SOC is a "service", a self-describing encapsulation
of domain-specific functionalities. Business processes and applications
supporting SOC can be built based on compositions of distributed and loosely
coupled services. SOC relies heavily on existing open Internet standards and
protocols like HTTP and XML (e.g., Web services), which allow easy integration
and cost-effective adoption of SOC using an existing infrastructure.
Currently, it can be observed that SOC-related technologies and approaches
become more and more mature and widespread, both in research and in real-life
projects. Therefore, this special issue of the PIK magazine covers ongoing
research as well as reports from SOC projects in the industry.

Call for Demos
Third Workshop on Challenged Networks (CHANTS 2008)
Co-located with Mobicom 2008, 15 September 2008, San Francisco, CA, USA
Workshop URI: http://wavedesk.usc.edu/chants/
Important Dates:
Demo submission deadline: 5 June 2008
Demo acceptance notification: 16 June 2008
Camera-ready due: 29 June 2008
Workshop date: 15 September 2008
Challenged networks are characterized by a heterogeneous mix of nodes
and widely varying network conditions. Nodes in today's challenged
networks often include mobile nodes, space-based nodes,
sensor/actuator nodes and other devices. Performance of the network
paths interconnecting such nodes can be highly varying in terms of
bandwidth, latency, disruption characteristics and security
requirements. Conventional Internet access in performance-limited
environments such as developing countries can also be regarded as
challenged networks as can be ad-hoc communication between personal
devices.
The Internet protocol architecture suffers some problems when used in
a challenged network setting. For example, when disconnection and
reconnection is common or link performance is highly variable or
extreme, one or more of the traditional Internet protocols do not work
well. In this workshop following CHANTS 2007, CHANTS 2006 and WDTN
2005, we wish to explore ongoing efforts in dealing with physical
networks that operate significantly differently from wired, connected
networks and the protocol architectures and algorithms used to deal
with such situations. Techniques for making applications tolerant to
disruptions and/or high delays are also in scope.
CHANTS 2008 Demonstration Program offers an excellent way to showcase
to attendees from academia and industry tangible results from research
and development in the exciting area of challenged networks. Demos
have the ability to communicate ideas and concepts in a very powerful
way. We invite you to contribute your vision and experience with
challenged networks to CHANTS 2008 Demonstration Program. Demo
proposals shall present recent practical results from the area of
challenged networks. In exceptional cases, where live demos are
simply not practical to present, poster or video presentations of
practical results are acceptable, too. Accepted demonstration
abstracts will be published in the Conference proceedings.
Topics:
Characterization of performance-challenged networks e.g.
measurements, modelling.
Networking systems operating over unusual/challenged networks.
Protocol design and evaluation of operations over challenged
networks.
System architecture and design for challenged networks.
Applications in challenged networks.
Robust network application design and implementation techniques.
Delay tolerant and disruption tolerant networks (DTN).
Configuration and management of challenged networks.
Format and submission instructions:
Demo proposal abstracts (to be published as part of the proceedings)
shall not be longer than 3 pages plus 1 page description of the
precise setup and requirements. Submitted abstracts should be
formatted in two columns, with characters no smaller than 10 point
fonts, and must fit properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11
inches). Margins must be of 1 inch on all edges (top, bottom, left,
and right) of each page. Demo proposals should be sent as a pdf e-mail
attachment to chants08-demo(a)inrg.soe.ucsc.edu.

CALL FOR PAPERS
MeshTech 2008
Second IEEE International Workshop on
Enabling Technologies and Standards for Wireless Mesh Networking
http://www.ing.unipi.it/meshtech08
co-located with IEEE MASS 2008
sponsored by IEEE, IEEE Computer Society,
IEEE TC on Distributed Processing,
IEEE TC on Simulation, and IEEE TC on Computer Communication
September 29, 2008
Atlanta, GA, USA
Wireless mesh networks are emerging as a key technology for next
generation wireless networking. A wireless mesh network is characterized
by dynamic self - organization, self-configuration and self-healing,
which allow it for easy and fast, highly scalable, reliable and cost-
effective network deployment under very diverse environments, and
provision of better coverage and capacity to stationary and mobile
users. Because of this, wireless mesh networks have not only become a
hot topic in the research community, but are also experiencing a very
fast deployment in many today's environments, such as public city-wide
broadband WiFi networks, rural networks, private neighbourhood
communities, or private business networks that are characterized by
frequent topology changes, cabling troubles, or hard environmental
conditions.
Triggered by these fast advances in both research and industry
communities, several standardization bodies have started working on
specifying recognized protocols and architectures for interoperable
WMNs, including both the IEEE 802 LAN/MAN standards committee (inside
the IEEE 802.16/WiMAX, the IEEE 802.11s, the IEEE 802. and the IEEE
802.15.5 Working Groups) and the IETF in the context of wireless access
and mobility support in Next Generation Internet (inside, e.g., the
MIPSHOP, NETLMM and MANET Working Groups). However, it is still to be
fully understood what technological challenges these standardization
efforts have to face, how they will evolve, and what application
scenarios will be able to drive their possible success.
Building on the success of the last year event, MeshTech 2008 aims at
bringing together again practitioners and researchers from both academia
and industry in order to discuss the recent advances and future
evolution of next generation mobile mesh/multi-hop relay networking
technologies and standards.
Within the scope of wireless mesh networks, topics of interest include,
but are not limited to:
- Routing protocols
- Medium access control protocols
- Quality of Service and fairness provisioning
- Mesh networks configuration and management
- Topology discovery, association and control
- Mesh networks measurement
- Mobility management
- Interworking in heterogeneous wireless mesh networks
- Coexistence with existing wireless infrastructures
- Security architectures, functions and protocols
- Performance evaluation
- Comparative study of competing solutions
- Cross-layer design and optimization
- Advanced antenna technologies
- Cognitive and frequency-agile radios
- Fault tolerance, anomaly detection and error recovery schemes
