Call for Papers
Ubiquitous Inter- and Intra-Vehicular Computing
Workshop at 10th International Conference on Ubiquitous Computing
COEX, Seoul, South Korea
September 21 - 24, 2008
http://www.hcilab.org/events/uiivc
Workshop Overview:
------------------
Vehicles are an interesting space for ubiquitous computing!
- They can be host to mobile devices (e.g. PDAs, PNAs, mobile phones).
Interaction with these devices in vehicular environments includes
computer-computer interaction (e.g. exchanging data between vehicle
and mobile device) and human-computer interaction involving voice,
gesture and text input and output with their respective technologies.
- Vehicles themselves are mobile networked sensing systems. They have
a significant number of intra-vehicle communication systems such as
busses connecting hundreds of sensors and delivering information at
high data rates, both to other digital systems and to the driver.
- The sensor density in modern cars is comparable to ubiquitous
computing environments. Interconnecting sensor-equipped vehicles
enables novel types of applications. Vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and
vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication provide vehicles with
information about their vicinity, allowing vehicle systems to
augment the driver's perception of the environment, thereby
increasing road safety, traffic efficiency and comfort.
Workshop Topics:
----------------
- networked sensing systems integrated in vehicles, infra-structure
or used by other traffic participants (pedestrians, cyclists, ...)
- multi-modal human-machine interaction in vehicular environments;
combinations of vehicle-integrated and mobile user interfaces
- machine-machine interaction and information fusion for (seamless)
integration of mobile devices into vehicular environments
- mobile vehicular services and service management
- new concepts for driving interfaces, driver assistance systems
and driving assistance systems
- methods and tools for automotive user interfaces and application
research and their evaluation
- novel multimedia interfaces and in-car entertainment
- input and output technologies and systems while driving (text,
speech, touch, ...)
- user interfaces for on-the-road information exchange, navigation
and inter-vehicle communication
- detection, estimation and modeling of user intentions, vehicle
context and traffic situation
- application frameworks, toolkits or models for
vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and
vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication
- applications, services, user interfaces and toolkits for
vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) communication and
vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communication

Call For Papers
Journal of Information Science and Engineering (indexed by SCIE)
Special Issue on Vehicular Wireless Networks and Vehicular Intelligent
Transportation Systems
Aim and Scope:
-----------------------
With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the Vehicular
Wireless Networks (V-Winet) and Vehicular Intelligent Transportation
Systems (V-ITS) have recently received much attention. V-Winets and
V-ITS aim to ensure traffic safety for drivers, provide comfort for
passengers and reduce transportation time and fuel consumption with
many potential applications. For instance, vehicular safety applications
include automatic collision notification, heavy fog detection and
notification, remote diagnostics, emergency management, and other
assistances for safe driving. Non-safety applications include real-time
traffic congestion notification, location-based driver information services,
high-speed tolling, vehicle tracking, automobile high speed Internet access,
in-place traffic view, and many others. To facilitate these applications,
many different types of communications and networking would be involved,
including intra-vehicle, vehicle-to-vehicle (V-to-V),
vehicle-to-roadside (V-to-R) and vehicle-to-infrastructure (V-to-I)
communications for V-Winet and V-ITS to provide timely information or
Internet access to vehicles, drivers, and passengers. Consequently,
V-Winet and V-ITS need to integrate existing networking technologies,
such as IEEE 802.11a, IEEE 802.11p, DSRC, 3G, IEEE 802.16, Bluetooth,
Sensor networks, and ZigBee for easy, accurate, effective and simple
communications among vehicles, users, and infrastructure networks.
This special issue aims to foster the dissemination of high-quality,
original, unpublished research covering all aspects of V-Winet and V-ITS
communications, networking, and applications. Topics of interest include,
but not limited to, the followings:
- Network Architecture of V-Winet/V-ITS
- V-Winet/V-ITS Services and Applications
- Cooperative Aspects of V-Winet/V-ITS
- Availability and Scalability Issues in V-Winet/V-ITS
- Mobility, Traffic Models and Network Management for V-Winet/V-ITS
- Cross-layer Optimization Techniques for V-Winet/V-ITS
- Modulation, Coding, and Channel Modeling for V-Winet/V-ITS
- Vehicle-to-Vehicle Communication Protocols
- Vehicle-to-Roadside Communication Protocols
- Vehicle-to-Infrastructure Communication Protocols
- Simulation Framework and Real-World Testbeds for V-Winet/V-ITS

=====================
CALL FOR PAPERS
IEEE Journal on Selected Areas in Communications (JSAC)
BIO-INSPIRED NETWORKING
Technology is taking us to a world where myriads of massively networked
devices interact with the physical world in multiple ways, and at
multiple scales, from the global Internet down to micro- and
nano-devices. Many of these devices are highly mobile and autonomous,
and must adapt to the surrounding environment in a totally distributed
and unsupervised way.
Recently, a number of approaches inspired by biological mechanisms and
phenomena have been proposed as a strategy to handle the complexity of
massively distributed systems such as the Internet, or wireless ad hoc
and sensor networks. The goal of bio-inspired approaches is to discover
and to adapt biological methods to technical solutions that are showing
similarly high stability, adaptability, and scalability as biological
entities often have.
This special issue intends to highlight the latest achievements in the
new research domain of bio-inspired networking. In particular, the issue
focuses on methodologies for identifying relevant biological mechanisms,
the modeling of these mechanisms, and their application to technical
solutions. Prospective articles are expected to outline either proof of
concept studies with direct comparison to classical technical solutions,
or theoretical mathematical models of biological principles associated
with fundamental challenges in communication systems. For this special
issue, we consider all techniques with direct biological background
including animal learning strategies, self-organizing methods as
observed from swarms down to nano-structures that are observed and
analyzed in molecular biology. Classical complex systems research is
explicitly excluded from the scope whereas a comparison to well-known
techniques in this domain is appreciated.
This special issue is dedicated to bio-inspired approaches addressing
various aspects of networking and communication systems. The topics of
interest include the following domains:
Self-organizing communication systems
Evolutionary and adaptive systems and protocols
Scalable systems and protocols
Self-learning algorithms
Self-healing systems and protocols
Security mechanisms
Network algorithms and protocols
Scalable and adaptive network architectures
Congestion control mechanisms
Performance evaluation of bio-inspired networks
Original unpublished contributions, and invited articles will be
considered for the issue. The papers should be formatted according to
IEEE-JSAC guidelines. Authors should submit a PDF version of their
complete manuscript via email to dressler(a)ieee.org according to the
following timetable:
Manuscript Submission: March 1, 2009
Acceptance Notification: September 1, 2009

PRELIMINARY CALL FOR PAPERS
5th IEEE International Workshop on Networking Issues in Multimedia
Entertainment
(NIME'09)
IEEE CCNC 2009 - Satellite Workshop
Sponsored by the IEEE Communications Society
January 13 2009, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA
Website: To be announced
The growing availability of digital contents and the simultaneous cost
reductions in storage, processing, and networking is driving the growth
of the
entertainment technology. While in the past entertainment technology
traditionally offered predominantly passive experiences, continual
advances in
network and computer technologies are providing tools for implementing
greater
interactivity and for enabling consumers to enjoy more exciting experiences,
such as, for example, interactive digital TV, interactive theatre and
orchestrated music and sound design. This phenomenon is pulling together an
extremely diverse group of experts specializing in different technical
areas,
such as networking, computer graphics, artificial intelligence, games,
animation, multimedia design, human-computer interaction, educational
media and
software engineering. Even though high-tech entertainment promotes
interdisciplinary fusion, yet only the ubiquity of wireless/wired
communication
is considered suitable for accepting the challenge of building a large
interactive environment for the delivery of the maximum entertainment
value to
millions of consumers worldwide. In this respect, there is a great hope that
the wired and wireless may take over this complex scenario for
fulfilling the
consumer expectations. The Fifth IEEE International Workshop on Networking
Issues in Multimedia Entertainment provides an open forum for researchers,
engineers and academia to exchange the latest technical information and
research findings on next-generation networked multimedia concepts,
technologies, systems, and applications for entertainment covering existing
deployments, current developments and future evolution. Authors are
solicited
to submit complete unpublished papers in the following, but not limited to,
topic areas:
Application for Entertainment
* Architectures, Platforms and Protocols for Networked Games

CALL FOR PAPERS
(pdf version: http://ewh.ieee.org/conf/swin/2008/cfp_swin08.pdf)
The First International Workshop on Simulators for Wireless Networks
(SWiN 2008) will be held in conjunction with the fourth IEEE
International Conference on Wireless and Mobile Computing, Networking
and Communications (WiMob 2008) in Avignon, France, on October 12th,
2008. The main focus of this workshop is on simulation of wireless
multi-hop networks.
The SWiN workshop is devoted to the topic of wireless multi-hop network
simulators. An efficient and accurate simulation of these networks
raises various issues which generally need to be addressed from several
research domains simultaneously. As examples, we can consider the
wireless physical layer modeling and simulation, the support of large
scale networks, the simulation of complex R/F systems such as MIMO ones,
the emulation of wireless nodes, etc.
In particular but not exclusively, the Program Committee will be seeking
high quality papers on the following aspects of wireless network simulation:
- Radio medium modeling & simulation;
- Scalability, large scale networks support;
- Validation of simulators and simulation results;
- Simulators benchmarking and comparisons;
- Support of advanced R/F systems (MIMO, smart-antenna);
- Support of distributed physical layer schemes (distributed signal
processing, cooperative schemes);
- Wireless node simulation or emulation;
- Interoperability of simulators, emulators and experiments;
- Distributed simulation;
- Implementation of simulators.
This workshop will be an opportunity to present the current works in
these domains as well as to foster discussion and cooperation among
researchers coming from the fields of simulation, radio medium modeling,
ad hoc networking and wireless sensor networking. It will also be the
occasion for people directly involved in the development and
implementation of simulators to meet and confront their work with the
models, applications and requests coming from the research communities
that effectively use the simulators. In addition to contributed talks,
the workshop program will include two tutorials on wireless physical
layer modeling and wireless network simulators.
SWiN 2008 will be held in Avignon, in the "Provence" part of Southern
France. Avignon is known for its "Palais des Papes" (Palace of the
Popes), where the Popes lived for much of the 14th century. With Avignon
being one of the most charming places on earth, we expect this to be a
truly special workshop.
