COLLABORATECOM 2008
The 4th International Conference on Collaborative Computing
: Networking, Applications and Worksharing
Sponsored by, Create-Net and the Institute for Computer Sciences,
Social Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering
The Regal Sun Resort, Orlando, FL, USA, November 13-16, 2008
http://www.collaboratecom.org/
EXTENDED SUBMISSION DEADLINE: July 31, 2008
===========================================================================
Over the last two decades, many organizations and individuals have relied
on electronic collaboration between distributed teams of humans, computer
applications, and/or autonomous robots to achieve higher productivity and
produce joint products that would have been impossible to develop without
the contributions of multiple collaborators. Technology has evolved from
standalone tools, to open systems supporting collaboration in
multi-organizational settings, and from general purpose tools to
specialized
collaboration grids. Future collaboration solutions that fully realize the
promises of electronic collaboration require advancements in networking,
technology and systems, user interfaces and interaction paradigms, and
interoperation with application-specific components and tools.
The Fourth International Conference on Collaborative Computing
(CollaborateCom 2008) will continue to serve as a premier international
forum for discussion among academic and industrial researchers,
practitioners, and students interested in collaborative networking,
technology and systems, and applications.

CALL FOR PAPERS
ACM Transactions on Autonomous and Adaptive Systems
Special Issue on
Self-Adaptive and Self-Organizing Wireless Networking Systems
http://taas.acm.org/TAAS-ACM-SelfOrg-WSN.pdf
Paper submission due: July 31st, 2008
****************************************************************************************
Recent advances in wireless communications and networking, distributed sensing and
control, and real-time and embedded systems have led to some new computing paradigms,
such as ubiquitous and pervasive computing, wireless sensor networks, and cyber-physical
systems. Many novel and attractive applications are made possible, such as advanced
automotive systems, environmental control, critical infrastructure control, high
confidence medical devices and systems, etc. In these applications, a large scale wireless
networking system that consists of massive numbers of connected processing elements,
sensors, and actuators often plays a key role. The high complexity of such large scale
heterogeneous systems raises new challenges to the system design: we expect the system
to be context-aware and self-adaptive to internal and external environments to achieve
reliable and robust performance; to be self-organizing and scalable so that managing and
maintaining costs could be minimized; to have programmable architecture and protocols for
achieving optimal performance in different situations/scenarios, etc. These challenges
need to be addressed under joint efforts from different areas, such as networking, system,
control, AI, biology, and others.
The special issue seeks original and unpublished papers that address theoretical and
experimental work related to self-adaptive and self-organizing wireless networking systems
(SASOWNS). Papers are solicited from, but are not limited to, the following topics:
* Self-adaptive architectures, algorithms, and protocols
* Control theoretical approaches for self-optimization
* Self-organizing wireless mesh, ad hoc, and sensor networking
* Self-configurable and programmable MAC and routing protocols
* Biological, economic, and social models for large scale SASOWNS
* Applications and testbeds of SASOWNS
* Autonomic and autonomous wireless networking systems

Call for Papers
Workshop on Urban, Community, and Social Applications of Networked
Sensing Systems
November 4, 2008, Raleigh
http://sensorlab.cs.dartmouth.edu/urbansensing/
Held in conjunction with ACM SenSys 2008
Sensing is going mobile and people-centric. Sensors for activity
recognition and GPS for location are now being shipped in millions
of top end mobile phones. This complements other sensors already on
mobile phones such as high-quality cameras and microphones.
At the same time we are seeing sensors installed in urban
environments in support of more classic environmental sensing
applications,
such as, real-time feeds for air-quality, pollutants, weather
conditions, and congestion conditions around the city. Collaborative
data
gathering of sensed data for people by people, facilitated by sensing
systems comprised of everyday mobile devices and their interaction
with static sensor webs, present a new frontier at the intersection
between pervasive computing and sensor networking.
This workshop promotes exchange among sensing researchers involved
in areas, such as, mobile sensing, people-centric
and participatory sensing, urban sensing, public health, community
development, and cultural expression. It focuses on how mobile
phones and other everyday devices can be employed as network-
connected, location-aware, human-in-the-loop sensors that enable
data collection, geo-tagged documentation, mapping, modeling, and

ACM HotMobile 2009, the Tenth Workshop on Mobile Computing Systems and
Applications continues the series of highly selective, interactive
workshops focused on mobile applications, systems, and environments,
as well as their underlying state-of-the-art technologies. HotMobile's
small workshop format makes it ideal for presenting and discussing
new directions or controversial approaches.
We solicit submissions of position papers that focus primarily on
applications and systems and that propose new directions of research,
advocate non-traditional approaches to old (or new) ideas, or generate
controversy and discussion. We particularly look for position papers
containing highly original ideas in the following topic areas, although
papers describing other challenges unique to or exacerbated by mobility
are also welcome:
* Operating system and distributed systems support for mobile computing
* Coordination, aggregation, and spontaneous interaction of mobile devices
* Novel applications and environments supporting mobility
* HCI issues related to mobile computing
* Security and privacy of mobile computing
* Management, configuration, and deployment of systems supporting mobility
Submissions describing new lower-level technologies are welcome if they
focus on how the technology is being used or integrated into a system
or application.
HotMobile 2009 will be a highly interactive workshop. Submissions will be
judged based upon originality, technical merit, topical relevance, and
likelihood of leading to insightful discussion at the workshop.
To encourage an atmosphere conducive to participation, attendance will be
limited to 70 participants. Authors of submitted papers and accepted demo
proposals will be given first priority, with others able to register
on a space-available basis.
Paper submissions are due on Oct 13, 2008 at 23:59:59 PDST.
Submissions should contain 6 or fewer U.S. letter pages in PDF format.
Papers should be single column using 11pt font. The conference proceedings
will be published by the ACM. All papers must not have been published
elsewhere
and may not be simultaneously under submission at another venue.
Electronic proceedings will be made available to workshop participants
online
ahead of the workshop. Note that unlike previous years, there will be no
post-proceedings. Instead, final versions of workshop papers will be
submitted
before the HotMobile 2009 workshop, and attendees will receive a printed
copy of proceedings.
The important dates as well as the organizing and program committee

Invitation to participate in M4D 2008
M4D 2008 - 1st International Conference on "M4D":
Mobile Communication Technology for Development
11-12 December, 2008, Centre for HumanIT
Karlstad University, Karlstad, Sweden
http://m4d.humanit.org
New developments in mobile communication technologies have generated a
number of possibilities for economic and social development in low-income
countries. M4D 2008 focuses specifically on mobile technologies within the
broader field of study that has now become known as ICT4D ("ICT for
Development").
We strive to have an event where all types of actors are included. There
will be a research stream with a traditional conference design and a
practitioners stream where industry, NGOs, and public bodies can
disseminate their knowledge. For each of these two major focuses there will
be an internationally renowned keynote speaker.
We welcome presentations within all "m" areas: m-government, m-health,
m-banking, m-policy, etc., as well as social and cultural aspects of M4D.
While the "m" in this context often implies low tech it is also noteworthy
that wireless connections have promises for the development of broadband
networks: there will be a special workshop on wireless broadband networks
for developing regions including mesh networks.
Submission of papers and poster abstracts will open in late August and close
at the end of October. We will review proposals continuously to be able to
provide early feedback to people who need Letters of Invitation for visas to
get to Sweden; see further under "Participation" at http://m4d.humanit.org !
Welcome to Sweden in December!
