IPSN brings together researchers from academia, industry, and government to present and discuss recent advances in both theoretical and experimental research. Its scope includes signal and image processing, information and coding theory, databases and information management, distributed algorithms, networks and protocols, wireless communications, machine learning, and embedded systems design. The conference features two interleaved tracks, the Information Processing (IP) track, and the Sensor Platforms, Tools and Design Methods (SPOTS) track. The two tracks have separate program committees to evaluate their submissions. Authors should carefully review the intended foci of these two tracks to decide which track is better suited for their work, and they are encouraged to contact program chairs with questions or clarifications. The Information Processing (IP) track focuses on algorithms, systems, theory for information processing using networks of embedded sensors. Topics covered in this track include, but are not limited to: - Applications and deployment experiences - Coding, compression and information theory - Data processing, storage and management - Detection, classification, and tracking - Distributed algorithms and reasoning - Distributed and collaborative signal processing - Fault tolerance and identification - Fundamental bounds and formulations - Location, time, and other network services - Operating systems and runtime environments - Network health monitoring and management - Network protocols - Programming models and languages - Security - Sensor tasking, control, and actuation - Simulation The Sensor Platforms, Tools, and Design Methods (SPOTS) track focuses on networked embedded sensor platforms and tools. Submissions are expected to refer to specific hardware, software, and implementations. The SPOTS track focuses on new architectures, modeling, evaluation, design methods, implementations, tools, or deployment experiences. Results focused on the analysis and processing aspects of data collected from deployments should be submitted to the IP track, while details on the platforms and tools used in the deployment should be submitted to SPOTS. Topics covered in the SPOTS track include, but are not limited to: - Case studies that describe experiences, highlight challenges, and study/compare the performance of platforms and tools - Novel sensor network components, device platforms and architectures - Embedded software for sensor networks - Design tools and methodologies for sensor networks - System modeling, simulation, measurements, and analysis -------- SUBMISSION GUIDELINES --------- All papers must be submitted electronically, in Portable Document Format (PDF). From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. It will uniquely bring together approaches driven from mobile and wireless demands, network virtualization, network self-management, content and sensor networking and discuss these from both a technical as well as socio-economic perspective. Topics of Interest: We solicit contributions that report early results addressing research challenges in topics related to the network of the future. Particularly, we want to identify and address issues with a high potential for significant impacts on the way the network is functioning and being used. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically change their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the expense of significant energy consumption or through software complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for reprogramming themselves after their deployment. The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in embedded software, autonomic computing, ad-hoc networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN applications. The expected number of participants will be 15. The key advantages of these networks include allowing anywhere, anytime network connectivity with lack of centralized control, ownership, and regulatory influence; their ability to operate unattended in harsh environments in which contemporary human-in-the-loop monitoring schemes are risky, inefficient and sometimes infeasible; and ease of reconfiguration to fit specific application needs. However, the resource-constrained nature of the employed devices and the self-organization of the network, coupled with an often unattended deployment of a large population of nodes, pose non-conventional challenges and motivate the need for special techniques for dependable design and management of AHSNET. The last few years have witnessed a growing interest in the application of AHSNET in fields such as emergency search-and-rescue operations, decision making during combat, data acquisition operations in inhospitable terrains, dangerous battlefields, outer space, or deep oceans, among others. Such interest has fueled a wealth of research ideas that are moving rapidly into commercialization and standardization. While a single sensor network typically provides access to information of a limited geographical area and selected types of sensor data, a GSN provides an application with uniform and transparent access to a multitude of individual sensor networks that may be geographically dispersed, aggregating and correlating different types of data as appropriate for the application. The challenges imposed by global sensor networks are relevant to many fields in computer communications and distributed systems such as sensor networks, complex event and stream processing, pervasive computing, and P2P overlays. This workshop intends to bring together researchers and practitioners working in relevant fields in order to share ideas, challenges and visions on Global Sensor Networks as well as to foster new cooperation. WORKSHOP TOPICS GSN09 is looking for contributions related but not limited to the following list of topics in the domain of Global Sensor Networks: - Sensor network protocols - Complex event processing - Distributed stream processing - P2P overlays - Middleware - Security - Query processing and optimization - Quality of service - Applications SUBMISSION GUIDELINES Papers should be submitted in PDF format via the workshop page. Contributions may present i) novel and possibly preliminary research results (full papers 12 pages, short papers 6 pages) , ii) position papers describing major challenges (6 pages), iii) new trends from the industry (2 pages). Each submission will be reviewed by three members of the program committee and are selected according to their originality, quality, and relevance to the workshop topics. Accepted papers will appear in the KIVS Workshop proceedings (publisher to be announced). For accepted papers at least one author must register with the workshop and give a presentation at the workshop. Submissions must follow the KIVS formatting guidelines and must not exceed the given page limits. Note that contributions in English as well as in German are welcome. From a number of angles it appears that we have reached a point in the impressive development cycle of the Internet that now requires some major change. However, research and development in these areas is still at an early stage and the space of potential solutions is far from being explored. The International Workshop on the Network of the Future (Future-Net 09) is a platform for both clean-slate as well as evolutionary approaches for a redesign of the Internet. With the rapid convergence of networks and applications, changes in related industries, more complex value chains and increased competition, early prototyping and experimentation will become a key means for driving innovation and development of market oriented solutions. In this context, value generation has shifted from network technologies towards applications and content. Thus, the nature and scope of testbeds have changed substantially in recent years from solely network technologies towards complex service delivery infrastructures riding on various networks. In contrast to traditional vendor, operator and technology specific "closed" testbeds, the notion of "open" testbeds has emerged. "Open" in this context means both wide access as a shared resource and extensibility to include on-demand new end systems, network technologies, protocol stacks, and, most importantly, new middleware and service delivery platforms for specific test purposes. To meet this need, major research and development programs have started around the globe, including GENI in the U.S. and FIRE in Europe, to establish large scale experimental facilities. TridentCom 2009 will provide a forum to explore existing and planned testbed concepts, infrastructures, and tools to address the research and business challenges in a world of global convergence. Motivation The Internet architecture has been remarkably successful in allowing a planet-scale internetwork to form. However, this architecture is losing its original simplicity and transparency as new classes of applications, operational and management requirements, business models, security mechanisms and scalability enablers give rise to point solutions that extend the architecture without regard to the original design principles. While these mechanisms are necessary for Internet operation under current economical, technical and social conditions, their combination has significantly reduced the potential for incremental evolution of the Internet architecture. This loss of flexibility is already being felt as the number of Internet nodes grows by another order of magnitude. Several substantial Future Internet initiatives have started in Europe, the US and Asia, and the vendor and network operator communities are also actively discussing the limitations of the current Internet architecture as well as its potential evolution. This workshop will discuss what the real underlying problems are with the Internet and how we might fix them so that the Internet architecture re-gains its simplicity and transparency and is fit for another 30+ years, so that the architectural simplicity and clarity of the Internet can be regained and retained for another 30+ years. This workshop solicits original, high-quality papers that analyze, and discuss ideas for a new Internet architecture, including specific improvements to current Internet protocols, especially at the internetworking, transport and application layers, new internetworking components that integrate into the existing architecture and ideas for clean-slate internetworking architectures. Topics ReArch'08 covers all aspects related to the current and future Internet architecture including, but not limited to, how the following impact on that architecture: New networking paradigms New business models New routing architectures New traffic engineering and congestion control mechanisms Measurements and analysis that characterize the real architectural limitations New architecture proposals and their implications for research New protocols that address the limitations Studies of interactions between stakeholders of the Internet and the architecture itself Design principles and interfaces to accommodate the conflicting interests of stakeholders in the architecture Principles of evolving future architectures Requirements for interworking with the existing Internet, and for deployability. Papers that present interesting, fresh ideas at an early stage are more suitable for this workshop than highly polished results or incremental refinements of previous work. Submissions may include position papers that point out new directions and stimulate discussion; position papers should be clearly marked. While commercial MMVEs like World of Warcraft, Second Life, or Sony Home already exist, there are still a large number of open issues and important research questions that must be addressed in order to realize truly massive environments, both in terms of the size of the environment as well as the number of its concurrent users. The ultimate goal of this development is a worldwide system that spans whole virtual planets with many millions of users. To achieve this, systems must be developed that are - at the same time - extremely scalable, highly interactive, secure and reliable. They must support a consistent view of the environment for all users. Updates to the environment, both its infrastructure as well as its content, must be applied at runtime. The operation and further development of systems must be cost-effective and profitable, thus stimulating investment in them. Existing MMVEs are based on mostly static, fixed infrastructures, in which predefined server clusters are preassigned to different functions for operating the MMVE. Such systems are currently able to support thousands of concurrent users. This requires the system's operator to provide all necessary resources, like compute power, memory and network bandwidth. To become truly massive, future systems must be made much more flexible and must build on self-organising, adaptive systems. One promising approach is the use of peer-to-peer architectures, because a substatial amount of the necessary hardware resources are contributed by the users themselves. Thus the amount of resources in the system grows with the number of users. While peer-to-peer technology is already being used sucessfully today in many applications, e.g. for Internet telephony and the distribution of software updates, its applicability in highly interactive and distributed virtual 3D environments is still challenging and comprises numerous research and engineering challenges. The goal of this workshop is to gather researchers and practitioners in the area of MMVEs under one roof to discuss their findings, identify future research areas, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The workshop addresses the following topics related to building, operating, and using MMVEs: 1. Basic networking support, e.g. peer to peer networking for MMVEs, 2. MMVE hosting and software as a service (SAAS), 3. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, 4. Self-organization and adaptation, 5. Placement and relocation strategies, 6. Scalability, 7. Interactivity, 8. Consistency, 9. Reliability and persistency, 10. Security and privacy, 11. Interoperability and integration of virtual environments, 12. User generated content, 13. Updating and content streaming, e.g. 3D streaming, 14. Evaluations and case studies of existing systems, 15. Development support and middleware platforms. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely-related one. We will prioritize experience papers describing lessons learnt from built systems, including information about approaches that did and did not work, unexpected results, common abstractions, and metrics for evaluating distributed virtual environment distribution approaches. One of the key issues to debate is the underlying structure of distributed virtual environment systems, which includes different possible configurations such as peer-to-peer, central-server-based, and hybrid models. Submitted papers should be about 10-12 pages long, use the ECEASST format and must be blinded (see the workshop web page for more info). Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer-reviewed (double blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. All accepted papers must be presented at the workshop and will be published in the Open-Access Journal "Electronic Communications of the EASST" (ECEASST) (http://eceasst.cs.tu-berlin.de/index.php/eceasst). Apologies for Multiple Copies Call for Papers The 3rd IEEE Workshop on Automotive Networking and Applications (AutoNet 2008) Co-located with IEEE GLOBECOM 2008 December 4, 2008 (Thursday) - New Orleans, LA, USA Coupled with advances in wireless communications and computing technologies, there have been significant recent efforts to enhance and integrate the communications and computing technologies into the vehicle and transportation systems to enhance vehicle safety, reduce traffic congestion, and protect environment. Significant industrial and governmental efforts are underway to push for vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking functions in vehicles and highway infrastructure. When such communications and networking capabilities are integrated into vehicles and the infrastructure, not only safety but many other emerging applications can be supported for intelligent interactions with the transportation system, with other vehicles, and inside vehicles, to help with traffic management, vehicle diagnostics, mobile commerce, and much more. This one-day workshop intends to bring together researchers, professionals, and practitioners to discuss and address recent developments and challenges in deploying vehicle-to-vehicle / vehicle-to-infrastructure networking technologies and their applications. Designing such systems requires interdisciplinary thinking. After the big success of TEI'07 and TEI'08 we are pleased to announce the third international conference dedicated to presenting the latest results in tangible and embedded interaction. Summary and Topics: Thanks to technological advances, wired and wireless sensor networks are attracting an increasing attention that promotes their large-scale deployments in many applications, such as environmental monitoring, military surveillance, and scientific exploration. Continuous improvements are motivating works in addressing specific sensor network issues spanning hardware, network protocols, architecture, operating systems, and applications. Furthermore, emergent needs to fulfill a variety of heterogeneous requirements are highlighting the importance of multidisciplinary networks that control their processing and manage their resources by means of self-organizing techniques. These techniques particularly require sharing the decision-making process over hundreds of low-power, short lifetimes sensors. The achievement of this goal is still facing an urgent and challenging question on how to provide these spatially distributed sensors with reasonable autonomy that help them in performing the right action, at the right time for the sake of fulfilling current requirements while increasing the lifetime of the entire sensor network and guaranteeing reliable and enduring pathway communications. Automating the sensor network activities is also an urgent and challenging issue especially that commonly sensing devices are operating unattended in remote and hostile areas where manual maintenance is nearly impossible. Since predefined and late decisions do not help much in improving the efficiency of networked sensing devices, automation and autonomy are very important mechanisms in addressing upcoming developments that target multi-services, collaborating, or competing sensor networks. Call For Papers Wireless Personal Communications (Springer) Special Issue on “Cross-Layer Design for Future Generation Wireless Networks” With the rapid development of wireless technologies, the future generation wireless networks have more challenges for providing reliable and high quality end-to-end performance in wireless multimedia communications. Recently, a cross-layer design has become a popular topic in which more and more researchers are engaged. That leads to a lot of cross-layer design proposals for wireless networks. This special issue is intended to foster state-of-the-art research pertaining to cross-layer design in the area of future generation wireless networks. The emphasis of this special issue will be on cross-layer protocol interactions and design of cross-layer optimized techniques. The issue will focus on a range of future generation wireless networks cross-layer design related topics including network architectures, mobility management, session mobility, security mechanism, services, and novel applications associated with their utilization, and hybrid routing protocols for mobile wireless networks, e.g., cellular/WLAN/WiMAX/ad hoc networks. Submitted papers for this special issue are expected to focus on cross-layer design related to future generation wireless networks and to present novel results and solutions to solve various problems and challenges foreseen in future generation wireless networks. All submitted papers will be peer-reviewed. Final selection of papers will be based on their quality and relevance to this special issue as well as the journal. Papers submitted for consideration for this special issue must be written in English and describe original research not published or currently under review by other journals. Topics Topics of interest include but are not limited to following: - Cross-layer architectures for wireless communications (3G, 4G, ad hoc networks, WLAN, or hybrid networks) - Cross-layer Design, implementation and test-bed results - Cross-layer end-to-end QoS support for wireless networks - Cross-layer mobility management and session mobility - Cross-layer secure mechanism for future generation wireless networks - Application layer adaptation based on cross-layer notifications - Complexity and scalability issues in cross-layer design - Cross-layer design of MAC, RLC, and routing protocols in wireless networks - Cross-layer adaptation for energy minimization in wireless networks - Cross-layer design framework for real-time multimedia streaming Submission Information Authors should follow the Wireless Personal Communications Journal manuscript format described in the Instructions for Authors link on the journal site: www.springer.com/11277.
