Following in the footsteps of past editions of ACM CoNEXT Student Workshop, ACM CoNEXT 2008 Student Workshop will provide a platform for students in the areas of computer networks and data communication to publicize their ongoing research work through posters. This will be also an opportunity for students to obtain feedback and learn what problems are being tackled by fellow students. It will also be an opportunity for students to network with other students and senior researchers. We invite submissions of 1-2 page abstracts from students worldwide describing their ongoing research work for potential presentation at the ACM CoNEXT 2008 Student Workshop. Research work that addresses non-standard or controversial problems and approaches are of particular interest, even if they are in an early stage. The Second International Workshop on Applications of Ad hoc and Sensor Networks (AASNET '09) (http://faculty.kfupm.edu.sa/coe/tarek/aasnet09.htm) is held in conjunction with AINA 2009 23nd IEEE International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications in Bradford, UK, May 26-29, 2009. Wireless mobile ad hoc and sensor network nodes have limited battery capacity. Hence, they tend to be energy conservative. Many MAC, routing protocols, scheduling scheme were proposed to promote energy conservation without degrading the performance of the network. Nonetheless, nowadays, many real-time applications have been proposed and developed using ad hoc and sensor networks. The aim of this workshop is to provide a forum for academic and industry professionals to discuss recent progress and challenges in the area of real time applications in ad hoc and sensor networks. CALL FOR PAPERS For the reliable performance evaluation of wireless networks, realistic models and credible simulation scenarios are crucial. Recently, in the area of wireless networks, it has been shown that simplistic models for mobility, traffic, and signal propagation yield results that are too optimistic. In order to provide more credible models, traces from specific scenarios need to be acquired and then realistic scenario models need to be developed and validated. We solicit papers on mobility, traffic, propagation, and scenario modelling for various wireless networks including MANETs, DTNs and vehicular networks. Papers on trace measurement architectures and trace characterizations of wireless networks are also welcome. The main purpose of this workshop is to promote further research interests and activities on scenario modelling of wireless networks. It is also aimed at increasing the synergy between academic and industrial researchers working in this area. We are interested in experimental, systems-related, theoretical, and work-in-progress papers in all aspects of wireless network scenarios. - Apologies if you receive multiple copies of this message ----------------------------------------------------------- Call for Papers for Special Issue on Service-Oriented Broadband Wireless Network Architecture IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine In the past few years, broadband wireless networks have been very attractive for providing broadband access because of quick and cost-effective deployments. In addition to the features of high data rate and large coverage, broadband wireless networks also promise to rapidly provide broadband access to locations in the world's rural and developing areas where broadband is currently unavailable, as well as competing for urban market shares. Till now, most existing efforts have been focused the basic "access" capability. However, to successfully deploy and operate broadband wireless networks, a crucial issue must be addressed: "How to support a variety of services and applications within the broadband wireless networks?" For instance, there is an increasing need to efficiently support applications such as voice over IP (VoIP), video streaming, music downloading, IP TV and many others. Apparently, existing "access-oriented" design may not be the good answer because of the following reasons. (1) Efficiency: Existing design may not be able to fully exploit the potential of wireless networks because a customer always needs to connect to an access point, which is very likely a bottleneck. (2) Quality of service: For many existing designs that are developed to gain Internet access, the customer may not be able to obtain the desired quality-of-service (QoS) because all services are provided by the Internet, which can only provide best-effort services in practice. (3) Incentive of the service provider: One critical issue that has been largely ignored is that the access-oriented design may not be fair to the service provider who develops the infrastructure, because the service provider can only earn the access fee, which is usually paid monthly and is relatively low compared to the deployment cost. To address the above issues, the service-oriented design on the network layer has been proposed recently and has gained increasing interests from both the research and industrial communities. With such a momentum, there is an urgent need to better understand as well as to keep track of cutting edge research on the service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. We plan this special issue to help address that need, as well as to help researchers looking to jump on the bandwagon. Therefore, the special issue will focus on recent advances as well as survey papers in service-oriented broadband wireless network architecture. Scope of Contributions The papers in this feature topic will focus on state-of-the-art research in various aspects of service-oriented broadband wireless network architectures. We solicit papers covering various topics of interest that include, but not limited to the following: - Broadband wireless network services and applications - 3G LTE services and applications - WiMAX services and applications - Service-oriented wireless mesh network architecture - Cross-layer approaches for service-oriented broadband wireless networks - Theoretical capacity analysis on service-oriented wireless networks - Topology control for emerging multihop wireless networks - Routing for service-oriented wireless networks - Optimal scheduling and medium access control for broadband wireless applications - Service orientation and call admission control in broadband wireless networks - QoS provision through interconnected wired and wireless segments - Security in broadband wireless networks - Reliability in multihop wireless networks - Network coding and physical-layer network coding in broadband wireless networks Articles should be tutorial in nature and should be written in a style comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article. However, papers presenting original contributions will also be considered, as long as the presentation is accessible and the paper length is kept within the appropriate limits. Articles should not exceed 4500 words. Figures and tables should be limited to a combined total of six. For manuscript submission, authors should follow the IEEE Wireless Communications Magazine manuscript format described in the "Information for Authors" at http://www.comsoc.org/pubs/pcm/sub_guidelines.html. The field of wireless vehicular communications can be typically identified as vehicle-to-person communications, vehicle-to-infrastructure communications, vehicle-to-vehicle communications, and vehicular communication networks. The combination of unique features of wireless vehicular communications and networking issues opens new opportunities for many interesting research areas, for example, real time safety applications, and intelligent diver information services. In order for universal realization of wireless vehicular communications, many research challenges still need to be addressed to create good-performance, highly scalable, robust and secure vehicular technologies. ------------------ Topics ------------------ The aim of this special issue is to present a collection of high-quality research papers that report the latest research advances and surrey the-state-of-the-art in this fast developing field. Snowbird, Utah, USA http://wons09.cs.ucla.edu ------------------------------------------------------------ Scope of the conference ----------------------- As more and more users become increasingly dependent on wireless and mobile communications, it is necessary to secure a reliable and dependable technology support for "on-demand" services through any of the wireless architectures that have been in development recently, such as mesh networks, WiMAX, WiFi, ad hoc networks, sensor networks, etc. However, there are serious challenges to overcome, such as the integration of infrastructure-based and ad hoc networks, robust algorithms for self-organizing, reconfigurable wireless networks, on-demand service models and their provision in a highly-volatile interconnection environment, and smooth interoperability of architectures. WONS, now in its sixth edition, has established itself as a high-quality forum to address these challenges in the context of a workshop that is rich in intense interactions and based on innovative contributions by experts in the field. This announcement solicits original submissions of high-quality research papers on "wireless on demand networks" that provide novel insights on protocol and network design, modeling and performance evaluation, pricing and profitability models, QoS models, practical implementations, service level aspects and Internet integration of wireless networks. Authors are invited to submit double-column full (8 pages) and short papers (4 pages) in PDF format. The font size should not be smaller than 10pt. Short papers should present future research directions, ongoing work, visionary and innovative ideas; accepted short papers will populate poster sessions at the conference and will be included in the conference proceedings. Submission implies the willingness of at least one of the authors to register and present the paper if accepted. Conference proceedings will be included in the IEEE Xplore library.
