International Conference on the Latest Advances in Networks (ICLAN'2008)
http://www.iclanconf.org/2008/
December 10-12, 2008, Toulouse, France
Technical co-sponsorship : IEEE France
Scope:
Deployment of communication networks in environments where mobility is needed
and where infrastructures are not possible or damaged, has led to solutions
mixing ad hoc and sensor networks with wired and/or wireless infrastructure
networks.
Obviously, these heterogeneous networks need new applications and services
but generate new constraints. Indeed, interconnection of different technologies
requires high quality of service and safe and secure data transmission between
a source and a destination. In order to do so, adaptation or even modification
of some protocols may be needed.
The aim of the conference is to bring together scientists and engineers,
whether from academia or industry, to exchange and discuss their experiences
and research results about all issues of these new types of networks. Thus, it
gives a great opportunity to present new opinions and receive feedback on work
in progress.
The topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
o Ad-hoc networks
o BAN
o Call admission and congestion control
o Cooperative networks
o Cross-layer architectures
o DVB
o Dynamic networks
o Heterogeneous networks
o MIMO
o Mobile and wireless networks
o Multimedia QoS and management
o Peer to peer
o Resource management and QoS for real time traffic support
o RFID and sensor networks
o Routing and switching
o Security techniques and systems
o Terrestrial satellite integration
o Transport protocols
o Ultra-wide band
o WiMax networks
o Wireless mesh networks
o WLAN, WPAN and 3G/4G networks
Paper Submission:
Authors are invited to submit manuscripts in PDF format only reporting original
unpublished research and recent developments in the topics related to the
conference. The length of the papers should not exceed 6 pages (IEEE Computer
Society Proceedings Manuscripts style: two columns, single-spaced), including
figures and references, using 10pt fonts, and number each page.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
As we progress from Generation X to Generation Z, we are also
advancing towards
Generation C where "the community is connected through context-aware
content". Wired
networks and applications have already responded well to the needs of
Generation C.
Though wireless is already prevalent in the forms of WLAN, WPAN
cellular etc, they are
still seen as the last mile enabler for these wired applications. As
advances in
pervasive computing, wireless communication and sensor networks
continue, real time
information availability, ubiquitous connectivity and convergence can
enable new
applications that are context aware and provide valuable services to
the community.
This workshop provides a forum for academia, industry, and government
agencies to discuss
the challenges involved in the design, deployment and operational
issues of Generation C
wireless networks. The workshop will identify and define new
applications, fundamental
issues and potential solutions. Contributions of all types including
case studies and
research, addressing the main focus or one of following non-exclusive
list of topics
are equally welcome:
* Connectivity and convergence of heterogonous networks
(interoperability, handoff, QoS, policies, resource management,
roaming, etc)
* Smart environments (buildings, roads, vehicles, etc)
* Location based services
* Security, privacy, and performance trade-offs
* Community based networks
* Next generation networking applications (social, vehicular,
healthcare, etc)
* Context-aware networks, service management and adaptive protocols
* Cognitive networks, protocols, and services
* Mobility models and traffic patterns
* Cross-layer designs and optimizations
* Testbeds, benchmarks, prototypes and experimental studies
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Betreff: [Mycolleagues] Special Issue on MMOG Systems and Applications
Datum: Mon, 15 Sep 2008 16:51:16 +0330
Von: Shervin Shirmohammadi <shervin(a)discover.uottawa.ca>
An: mycolleagues(a)grid.lrg.ufsc.br
*Call for Papers*
*Massively Multiuser Online Gaming Systems and Applications*
*Special Issue of*
*Springer’s Multimedia Tools and Applications (MTAP)*
*Guest Editors:
*Shervin Shirmohammadi, University of Ottawa, Canada
Mark Claypool, …
[View More]Worcester Polytechnic Institute, U.S.A.
------------------------------------------------------------------------
Massively Multiuser Online Games (MMOG) are now widely used not only for
gaming, but also for socializing, business and commerce,
experimentation, and many other practical purposes. One could argue that
MMOGs are the “killer app” that can bring Virtual Reality into the realm
of eSociety, creating an environment with millions of people taking part
in various activities and daily life, but electronically. This is
evident from the fact that real companies are opening “virtual branches”
in these online gaming platforms, such as clothing manufacturers, IBM,
and CNN, to name a few companies present in Second Life. Virtual
currencies such as Second Life’s Linden (or L$) are already being
exchanged for real-world money, as are virtual items and virtual
properties that are sold for real money. Massive numbers of users spend
their time with their fellow players at online games like EverQuest,
World of Warcraft, and Second Life. World of Warcraft, for example, has
over ten million (10,000,000) users with a peak of over 500,000 players
interacting at a given time in the digital world. There is no doubt that
MMOGs have a great potential to become the corner stone of an eSociety
platform bringing the massiveness of the real society into the digital
realm.
This special issue will cover enabling technologies and systems for
MMOGs, as well as applications of MMOGs outside of gaming. The focus
will be mostly on the “massive” aspect of games, but high-quality papers
in real-time interactive multiuser games (albeit not massive) will also
be considered if they address issues that can benefit massive games too.
Hence, topics include, but are not limited to:
* Networking support for massive number of players
* Networked games (non-massive)
* P2P architectures for better scalability
* Zoning techniques, Area of Interest Management, and seamless
player movement
* Application-Layer Multicasting for massive user support
* Performance evaluation and traffic/player pattern measurements
* Audio/video conferencing in games
* Latency compensation techniques
* Content adaptation for players on heterogeneous receivers
* Cheating: detection, avoidance, and repair
* Multiuser mobile games
* Case studies about applications of gaming in other disciplines
such as business, pedagogy, biology, psychology, etc.
Only papers that have not been published and/or submitted elsewhere will
be considered. Exception will be made for previously-published
high-quality conference/workshop papers, as long as they have been
substantially extended in terms of technical content and evaluation.
Papers should be no more than 20 pages, including figures and tables,
formatted according to MTAP guidelines, please see:
http://www.springeronline.com/sgw/cda/frontpage/0,11855,4-40109-70-35538244…
PDF submissions must be emailed directly to BOTH the guest editors at
shervin(a)discover.uottawa.ca <mailto:shervin@discover.uottawa.ca> and
claypool(a)cs.wpi.edu <mailto:claypool@cs.wpi.edu> before the submission
deadline below. If the submission is an extended version of a
previously-published conference paper, authors must also include
explanation of what parts have been extended.
Please check the CFP website for possible updates and/or changes

### CROWNCOM 2009
4th International Conference on Cognitive Radio Oriented Wireless Networks and Communications
June 22nd - 24th 2009, Hannover, Germany
http://www.crowncom2009.org/
--------------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
### Brief description
The owned spectrum allocation model in use today is believed to be obsolete. Firstly due to its intrinsic principle of fixed resource allocation that leads to a supposed spectrum scarcity, later revealed to be a question of non-efficient utilization. Secondly comes into play the need of introducing new wireless applications and services, which have experienced a huge growth in the last couple of decades, and are now supposed to cope with a multitude of already deployed standards. Both scenarios motivate the use of dynamic spectrum access in order to turn primary licensed networks into dynamic spectrum access networks (DSANs). This lends itself to cognitive radio, an enabling technology that will benefit several types of players and help to implement a more efficient approach regarding spectrum requirements in the future.

CALL FOR PAPERS
--------------------------------------------------------
Journal of High Speed Networks
Special Issue on QoS Routing in Wireless Mesh Networks
--------------------------------------------------------
Wireless Mesh Networks (WMN) is a promising technology that offers …
[View More]solutions
for low-cost broadband Internet access by extending the local area networks to
wide area. Unlike mobile ad hoc and sensor networks, the mesh nodes in a WMN
are stationary and have access to unlimited power. Typically, mobile clients
connect to the mesh nodes and use the backbone to communicate with one another
over large distances and with nodes on the Internet through a gateway.
One of the distinct characteristics of WMNs is that the mesh nodes can employ
multiple radios and utilize multiple channels which thereby bring a potential
to improve the throughput and bandwidth of the network. In addition,
directional and multiple input multiple output (MIMO) antennas can be employed.
Such technologies can be exploited for end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS)
provisioning that can be used to offer some level of service differentiation to
facilitate multimedia/real-time data communication, Video on Demand, VoIP, etc.
over WMNs. Prior research on QoS provisioning in mobile ad hoc and sensor
networks has mostly addressed the challenges under the single channel paradigm.
While the research community has recently started to study the QoS challenges
in WMNs, the current focus has largely been on bandwidth guarantees for traffic
going out of the WMN to the Internet via the gateway(s). Therefore, further
research is needed to provide QoS guarantees for intra-WMN traffic not only on
bandwidth but also on delay, delay jitter and reliability so that WMNs can be
realized as a technology in the near future.
The goal of this special issue is to collect papers in the area of QoS
provisioning in multi-radio, multi-channel, multi-hop WMNs. We solicit papers
which will address QoS challenges under multiple radios and channels, provide
the foundation for applications such as Video on Demand, teleconferencing and
VoIP, and deal with channel assignment and routing problems simultaneously.
Topics of interest include, but not limited to:
- QoS routing with multiple radios/channels
- Providing delay and delay jitter guarantees
- Cross-layer design and optimization
- Dynamic channel assignment with QoS routing
- MIMO techniques for QoS provisioning
- Handling mobility of mesh clients during QoS support
- Performance analysis
- Wireless mesh network testbed design and measurements
- Fault-tolerance and QoS provisioning
- Security and QoS provisioning
- Utilization of cognitive radio for QoS provisioning
- Centralized vs. distributed QoS algorithms
Important Dates:
- Manuscript Due: November 14, 2008
- Acceptance Notification: January 14, 2009
- Final Manuscript Due: February 4, 2009
Submission Guidelines:
All submissions to the Journal must be in English and based on original
research of some fundamental significance. The paper must not be published or
submitted for publication elsewhere, although part of the paper may have been
published in conference proceedings. A manuscript largely based on a conference
paper must be so identified. It is expected that the author(s) have obtained
necessary approval or clearance prior to submitting the paper. All submissions
to the Journal will be reviewed by competent referees and are considered on the
basis of their technical correctness, contribution, novelty, readability and
usefulness to the Journal's readership. The font size should be at least 10 and
the number of pages should not exceed 15. IEEE transaction style is preferable.
Please send the papers in pdf format to kemal(a)cs.siu.edu with a title of
Special Issue of Journal of High Speed Networks.
