It has been argued that one of the key characteristics of sensor networks is that they are so tightly coupled with the applications running on top of them. Although WSNs have been an active area of research for over a decade, real world sensor network deployments have not yet found their way to widespread adoption. The experience gained and lessons learned during the initial attempts to deploy WSNs and implement various sensor network applications are very valuable for the advancement of this technology. The 1st ICST International Conference on Sensor Networks Applications, Experimentation and Logistics (SENSAPPEAL 2009) aims at bringing together researchers and developers from academia and industry to present their work and share their experiences with developing, deploying and testing WSN applications. Moreover key enablers to WSN application development (such as OS, middleware, in-field reprogramming, testbeds and simulators, etc.) fall within the scope of the conference. Authors are invited to submit original unpublished work, not currently under review by another conference, workshop or journal. Full papers should be restricted to 20 camera-ready pages in the Springer "Lecture Notes of the Institute for Computer Sciences, Social-Informatics and Telecommunications Engineering (LNICST)" format. We also welcome submissions for demonstrations of pilot, experimental or real-life deployments, testbeds, simulators and applications of wireless sensor networks. This has led to a massive network deployment with the goal of eliminating the bandwidth bottleneck between end-users and the network core. Today many diverse technologies are being used to provide broadband access to end users. The architecture and performance of the access segment (local loop, wired and wireless access networks, and even home networks) are getting increasing attention for ensuring quality of service of diverse broadband applications. Moreover, most access lines will no longer terminate on a single device, thus leading to the necessity of having a home network designed for applications that transcend simple Internet access sharing among multiple personal computers and enable multimedia support. Therefore, the access network and its home portion have become a hot investment pool from both a financial as well as a research perspective. The aim of the annual International Conference on Access Networks (AccessNets) is to provide a forum that brings together scientists and researchers from academia as well as managers and engineers from the industry and government organizations to meet and exchange ideas and recent work on all aspects of access networks and how they integrate with their in-home counterparts. AccessNets'09 is the fourth edition of this exciting event, which will be held in Hong Kong, China, on November 2-4, 2009. In general DTN architecture can be defined by one or more of the following characteristics: (a) sparse connectivity (i. e., end-to-end route between source and destination may not even exist); (b) long or variable delay; (c) asymmetric data rate; and (d) high error rate. Such characteristics can be results of various factors, including sever power fluctuations, wireless range, network partitioning, catastrophic disasters, or malicious attacks. Consequently, applications of DTNs are highly diverse and can be expanded to a wide variety of areas. Examples of such areas are interplanetary networks for deep space communications, sensor networks for ecological monitoring, transient networks to benefit developing communities, ad hoc networks to disseminate information in tactical or roadway environments, and disaster recovery networks to restore communications following a natural disaster. Diversity of network environments and inherent uncertainty about network conditions make design of DTNs highly challenging in terms of architecture, protocol designs, interoperability, security, management, and stability. We hope this special issue can address some of these issues and further stimulate activity in the research community. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the- art research contributions that address the various aspects of delay/disruption tolerant communications, networks, architecture, and applications. Facing these challenges is a community-spanning effort that requires pooling the resources and experiences of both the virtual reality and the networking/ distributed computing communities. This workshop hopes to provide a link between these communities to foster the development of highly distributed, flexible and robust virtual environments. We aim to gather both practitioners and researchers under one roof to discuss their findings, incite collaborations, and move the state of the art forward. Topics ------ The main topic of this workshop is to provide a critical analysis of existing distribution approaches for virtual environments and to identify key challenges and techniques that are required for bringing VR systems into the global Internet, interconnecting thousands of users in a single environment. More specifically, the workshop addresses the following issues: 1. Scalability, i.e. the ability to handle thousands of (possibly nearby) users at the same time, interacting via the global Internet. 2. Interoperability, i.e. the ability to integrate multiple virtual worlds and/or service providers, e.g. using common protocols or universal clients. 3. Interactivity, i.e. how to provide highly responsive environments with near real time interactions despite network delay and jitter. 4. Bandwidth restricted (mobile) end user devices, e.g. the integration of mobile devices for nomadic augmented reality applications. 5. Dynamic & flexible distribution architectures, e.g. self-adapting client/server, peer-to-peer and hybrid architectures. 6. Content streaming, e.g. sound and 3D streaming. 7. Consistency, i.e. providing consistency guarantees to users of the virtual environment, despite network delay and the high level of responsiveness required. 8. Persistency, i.e. the ability to save and access the states of the virtual environments despite disconnections and faulty components. 9. Security & privacy, e.g. distributed authentication algorithms that allow users to participate in the environment securely and without fear of being spied. 10. Implementation issues, e.g. novel approaches to effectively manage the complexity of developing applications for such environments. Submission Guidelines ---------------------- Paper submissions must cover one of the topics listed above, or a closely- related one. Submitted papers should be at most 6 pages long, use the IEEE proceedings format and *must be blinded*. Research papers must be original prior unpublished work and not under review elsewhere. All submissions will be peer- reviewed (double-blind) and selected based on their originality, merit, and relevance to the workshop. Submissions in PDF format must be submitted online through the workshop page at http://peers-at-play.org/MMVE09/ no later than January 30th, 2009. Accepted papers must be presented at the workshop. ICFI2009 will be held in conjunction with Distributed Computing Techniques 2009 (DisCoTec'09), a major cluster of conferences sponsored by IFIP. ICFI2009 aims to bring together representatives of the communications industry, the software industry, and the research community working on various aspects of feature interactions in order to discuss possible solutions and their practical applications, as well as setting directions for further research. ICFI2009 will feature presentations by invited speakers, presentations of research and industrial papers (including short presentations), a doctoral symposium as well as posters and tool demonstrations. // THE FEATURE INTERACTION PROBLEM ---------------------------------// Feature interactions refer to conflicts among different features on a system. The features may be functions, services, concerns or aspects. Even if each individual feature works as intended, using multiple features together may cause unexpected (and often undesirable) behaviors, due to the feature interactions. The feature interaction problem was first studied in the domain of telecommunications systems. However, the phenomenon can occur in any software system that is subject to evolution, because the features of the new version of the system can interact with the features of the old system in an undesired way. Emerging application domains for which the feature interaction problem becomes relevant include policy-driven systems, Web services /service-oriented architecture, home network systems, building automation systems, mobile and ubiquitous systems, Parlay, 3G, grid and active networks, product-line engineering, etc. Detecting, resolving, preventing, and managing the feature interactions at different phases of the system life-cycle are more than ever important problems that need to be addressed with cost-effective techniques and tools. // TOPICS ----------------------------------------------------------// The following topics are relevant for the conference.
