The 2nd International Workshop on
Adaptation in Wireless Sensor Networks (AWSN-09)
http://tweb.ing.unipi.it/awsn09
In Conjunction with
The 7th IEEE/IFIP International Conference on Embedded and Ubiquitous
Computing (EUC 2009)
Vancouver, Canada, August 29-31, 2009
---------------------------------------------------------------------
CALL FOR PAPERS
Wireless sensor networks (WSN) are networked embedded systems that rely
on wireless communication. WSNs are supposed to run long-lived
applications. During operation, applications are likely to experience
unpredictable environment conditions that require to dynamically change
their behavior. With current reprogramming technology, such an
adaptation is still an open issue, as it can be achieved either at the
expense of significant energy consumption or through software
complexity. The challenge is to achieve WSN systems that not only embed
intelligence into environments, but also have embedded intelligence for
reprogramming themselves after their deployment.
The workshop aims at stimulating researchers and practitioners in
embedded and ubiquitous computing, autonomic computing, ad-hoc
networking and all other relevant areas to present their ideas and work
in progress for advancing the technologies that enable adaptive WSN
applications.
* Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
* Re-configurable, adaptive applications
* Context-awareness
* Self-healing, self-protection, self-configuration, self-optimization
* Agents and distributed computing
* Embedded Virtual machines
* Viral programming
* Opportunistic computing
* Intelligent power management and coverage
* Adaptive wireless communication and networks
* Security and fault-tolerance

http://prisms.cs.umass.edu/~sorber/mobisysforum09/<http://prisms.cs.umass.edu/%7Esorber/mobisysforum09/>
Co-located with ACM MobiSys 2009
-----------------------------------
Overview:
The PhD Forum provides a friendly and supportive environment for
doctoral students to present and discuss their dissertation research
both with their peers and with a panel of experienced researchers from
academia and industry. In addition to providing feedback and advice,
this forum will provide an opportunity for students to network as well
as to practice presenting their research clearly and concisely.
This forum is best suited to students who are far enough into their
PhD to have a concrete dissertation proposal outlining the key
challenges they plan to solve as well as the strategies and
methodologies that are applicable. Furthermore, participants should
not plan to finish their dissertation within 6 months of the forum, as
that would leave little time to include advice and suggestions into
their work.
Format:
This year's PhD Forum will be a one-day event consisting of short
student presentations, discussion, and a roundtable discussion. Each
participant will have time allotted for a short presentation as well
as an in-depth and constructive discussion led by the panel. In order
to allow adequate time for each presentation, we will limit the number
of participants to no more than 15 presenters.
The event will conclude with a roundtable discussion, in which
panelists will have another opportunity to provide general suggestions
and advice to the entire group.
Submission:
Submissions should consist of the following
1. A summary of the student's dissertation research (up to 3 pages)
including a brief discussion of motivation, challenges, related work,
and initial results. Applicants should clearly identify their
contributions to the field of mobile systems. Also, a clear
delineation of prior work and proposed work, will help the panel
provide more useful suggestions.
2. A short biographical sketch (1 page max) describing the applicants
affiliations and research activities. This should include the date
that the student expects to complete his/her dissertation.
Authors should follow the style formatting guidelines for MobiSys
papers. Submissions should be sent in PDF format to
mobisys.phdforum.2009(a)gmail.com.
If accepted, a student may be asked to provide explanations or
clarification by the camera-ready deadline.
Important Dates:
Submission Deadline: March 15, 2009
Notification Deadline: April 15, 2009
Camera-ready: May 1, 2009
Forum Date: June 22, 2009
Panelists:

Call for Paper
Special Issue PIK on Mobile Ad-hoc Networks
PIK IV/2009
Scope of the Special Issue
Recently, mobile ad-hoc networks (MANET) researchers show a large
interest in application and application-oriented protocol research.
While the basic organization of routing has been addressed since a
couple of years, more recent activities include auto-configuration,
security and data privacy, integration into hybrid networks, or
efficient use of various resources, such as bandwidth, energy, or
memory. Furthermore, the focus is shifted towards specific environments
like vehicular networks, mesh networks, or wireless sensor networks.
Whereas research on generic MANETs always struggled with unclear
operational conditions, a myriad of protocols and applications is
designed in these specialized areas. However, the goal still must be to
generalize these approaches to provide for broader ranges of MANETs.
It is the goal of this special issue to present approaches and solutions
in a wide variety of MANET-related domains in order to enable this
generalization and transfer ideas between the different areas.
Therefore, this special issue of the PIK magazine covers ongoing
research on the lower radio transmission layer all the way up to the
application layer relevant in MANETs. Furthermore, dedicated application
scenarios, such as vehicle-to-vehicle communications, disaster recovery
or emergency services are of high interest.
Tutorial-style articles in these fields are also solicited, if they
provide a structured introduction and overview of state-of-the-art
technologies, mechanisms, or architectures.
Areas of Interest
Contributions in the following areas are of specific interest but are
not limited to:
• Multi-hop wireless networks
• Infrastructure-less networks
• Mesh networks
• Inter-Vehicular-Communication (IVC, V2X, C2X)
• Wireless sensor networks
• Underwater sensor networks
• Use of cognitive radio
• Use of software defined radio
• Ad-hoc Networking architectures and protocols
• Applications and application scenarios for ad-hoc networks (e.g.
disaster recovery, emergency services, ..)
• Routing mechanisms
• Scalability and simulations
• Energy efficiency
• QoS for ad-hoc networks
• Self-configuration and self-organization in ad-hoc networks
• Auto-configuration and addressing
• Security, privacy, and data protection in ad-hoc networks
• Software platforms (middleware) for mobile applications
• Location-based services and their deployment
• Context management for ad-hoc services
• Pricing models and accounting schemes for commercial ad-hoc services
• Management mechanisms of ad-hoc networks
Important Information
Authors should send their submissions (German or English language) in
PDF format only and by e-mail to Matthias Frank
(matthew(a)cs.uni-bonn.de). The submission should not exceed 6 pages (one
page of the PIK format equals approximately 6000 characters excluding
figures).
All submissions will be peer-reviewed. In case of an acceptance, the
final and camera-ready version of the article has to take into account
all comments of those reviews received.

Call for Papers
The 4th ACM International Workshop on Mobility
in the Evolving Internet Architecture (MobiArch 2009)
-----------------------------------------------------
Co-located with MobiSys, 22 June 2009, Krakow, Poland
http://user.informatik.uni-goettingen.de/~mobiarch/2009/
With the recent development of technologies in wireless access and
mobile devices, user, terminal, and network mobility has become an
indispensable component of today's Internet vision, and it is likely to
continue in the near future, while affecting the whole architectural
design of the future Internet. Yet, issues like efficient mobility
management and optimization, locator-identifier split, multi-homing,
security, wireless access and related operational/deployment concerns
are still in their early stages of development. Moreover, the Internet
architecture, its end-to-end principles, and business models will
require rethinking due to the massive penetration of mobility into the
Internet. For instance, an appropriate system that allows communicating
with a mobile host requires addressing several fundamental issues with
the Internet architecture, such as ability to locate the mobile
host/service, preserving ongoing communications upon changes of
locations, as well as efficient and secure handover management. As
another example, the emerging wireless technologies may pose additional
challenges to the Internet architecture since they introduce design
principles different from the original Internet.
MobiArch 2009 welcomes submissions, from both researchers and
practitioners, in exploration of recent advances in architectures,
protocols, and experiences with emerging technologies on various
mobility issues over the Internet, with an emphasis on wireless
infrastructures and mobility patterns for mobility support, new mobility
protocols, service discovery, routing and location management, mobile
network performance evaluation and modelling, multi-homing, security,
architectural impacts and deployment considerations. Furthermore, the
potential of usability of mobility services for connecting people and
devices in developing regions of the world into the Internet
infrastructure will be also explored.
Topics of MobiArch 2009 cover all aspects of architectural issues and
system support for mobility in the Internet, including but not limited to:
* Impacts of new wireless technologies/services, networking
technologies, and mobility patterns on the Internet architecture
* Architectures and protocols for mobility support in the Internet,
ranging from approaches in link, network, transport to
session/application layers and cross-layer design
* Location management, routing, locator/identifier split, multi-homing
and load sharing issues
* Security and privacy issues in mobility networks and impacts to
Internet architecture
* Architectures and mechanisms for wireless/mobile connectivity in
extreme environments (e.g., remote areas, developing countries)
* Performance issues with mobility in the Internet
* QoS and middlebox issues in mobility networks and impacts to Internet
architecture
* Economic and deployment issues of mobility solutions (infrastructure
and devices)
* Impact of social aspects on mobility architectures, mobile application
and protocol design
* Technologies for mobile wireless access and interactions
Submissions must present original results. Selected papers will be
forward-looking, describe their relationship to existing work, and have
impact and implications for ongoing or future research.
Submitted papers must be no more than 6 pages long, two columns, with no
characters in smaller than 10 point fonts, and must fit properly on US
"Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches). Margins must be of 1 inch on all
edges (top, bottom, left, and right) of each page. All paper submission
will be handled via EDAS (http://edas.info/7188). Papers will be

Germany, 2009
2nd Workshop on Mobile Gaming
Motivation
Mobile games are based on the physical movements of players in a game-
world that combines the real world with virtual dimensions. Mobile
games unite two game-worlds that were previously mutually exclusive:
classic outdoor games and computer games.
But they are also games in the traditional sense as “homo sapiens” has
always been a “homo ludens”. Games are part of the every day life,
just like eating, breathing, or sleeping. They allow us to try the
impossible. We use game rules to voluntarily confine the game space,
and then roam this space to imaginatively overcome the limits of
reality. But apart from being a pastime, games also mirror the real
world and so they can be used to play-test life. Over the centuries,
games evolved with the intellectual and technical possibilities of
mankind.
The prehistory of mobile games began in the 1980s with Nintendo’s
handheld “Game & Watch” electronic games. The early 1990s saw the
advent of the “Gameboy”, which introduced exchangeable cartridges to
the video games mass market. At the turn of the millennium, the
Japanese I-Mode network pioneered mobile data services and thus opened
the door for mobile games that used the wireless Internet for
communication. On 1 May 2000, the US government announced the
discontinuation of the artificial degradation of GPS signals for non-
military users. This marks the end of the prehistory and the dawning
of mobile games in our sense.
The first such mobile game was Geocaching, where participants use GPS
coordinates that they obtained over the Internet to search for small
treasures that were hidden by other players. In 2003, Nokia introduced
the N-Gage, which was a GPRS-enabled smart-phone with an integrated
game-console. Due to its GPRS data-service, it allowed for wide-area
multiplayer games that were connected via a central server. At the
same time, it also allowed proximity based multiplayer games via
Bluetooth communication. Research project began to sprout world-wide
in conjunction with all these technological developments. These
projects set out to exploit the new possibilities and developed
context-aware and location-based applications that used the new
wireless positioning and communication technologies in various ways
and thus advanced the field in which mobile games are grounded.
Mobile games utilise mobile and pervasive technology. Small and
portable devices are equipped with sensors and models of their
environments that allow them to sense their current context, which
includes location, and act according to this input. Thus, from a
technological point of view, mobile games are part of the field of
ubiquitous computing.
Goals and research questions
Mobile games open up a wide range of research and developments
questions from a multitude of perspectives, including the conceptual,
the aesthetic and the technical. They require research into new types
of games and experiences, their concepts and design strategies, as
well as into the technical domain.
Researchers around the world utilise the human intellect of mobile
gamers to test prototypes of new interfaces for human-computer
interaction, infrastructures, and design concepts in order to advance
the new technologies. Games define their own rules – this opens up a
truly unique field for research into ideas and technologies. The
context of mobile games also provides opportunities for research into
the individual and social processes that circumvent the use of
information technology.
Game design faces new challenges. Until now, only a few games
exploited the possibilities offered by augmented and mixed reality,
global networks, location services and various sensors. Theory and
methods of analysis of the player experience in mobile games are still
in its infancy. What is the meaning of mobility and physical movement
in these mixed reality game-worlds? How to analyse the experience of
mobile players that are roaming the area rather than sitting in a
laboratory? What is the role of game communities and cultures for
mobile games?
Design and development of mobile games confronts us with the grand
challenges of ubiquitous computing: the complexity of mobile,
distributed services, its dynamic and ever changing contexts, the
diversity of participants, and the interaction in a post-desktop
paradigm which entails the body, various senses and modalities. The
technological diversity of hardware and software needs to be bridged
so that mobile gamers can interact across device boundaries. The
rapidly evolving diversity of sensors, actuators and user-interfaces
demands for flexible frameworks that allow for an easy integration.
This workshop contributes to revealing the research and development
possibilities offered by mobile games, and has a particular focus on
the German science and industry sectors. Researchers and developers
can use this field to exchange their experiences, formulate new
research questions, identify innovation potential, and find ways to
improve the business environment and leverage the potentials offered
by this exciting new field of research.
Addressees
This workshop is primarily targeted at users, developers, researchers
and decision makers in the field of mobile games, who are interested
in creative and innovative applications for pervasive and ubiquitous
computing. In addition to this, the workshops also seeks to address
people beyond the field of computer science, who are fascinated and
inspired by the technical possibilities offered by mobile games and
want to give growth to their own ideas.
Topics
Contributions to the workshop can be either technical papers or
position statements. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
Mobile games in the everyday life
Context of mobile games
Mobile game experiences and activities
Mobile gamer as producer
Alternate reality games
Traditional games and mobile games
