CALL FOR PAPERS -- GreenMetrics 2009 -- May 4 Deadline
GreenMetrics 2009 Workshop
Held in conjunction with SIGMETRICS/Performance 2009
June 15, 2009 - Seattle, Washington, USA
http://conferences.sigmetrics.org/sigmetrics/2009/
Global climate change is a topic of increasing importance in modern
society. The primary objective of this workshop is to explore how
improvements to or new uses of Information and Communication Technology
(ICT) can contribute towards efforts to minimize climate change. In
particular, this workshop will provide a forum for discussions on how to
reduce the environmental impact of ICT. According to a recent report from
the Climate Group, the ICT sector is responsible for 2% of the worldwide
carbon footprint. This is roughly equivalent to the carbon footprint of
the airline industry. Furthermore, an increase of 50% is predicted for
the ICT sector.s carbon footprint by 2020. As regulatory and social
pressures increase, organizations will need to take steps to reduce their
environmental impact. ICT is expected to be a key sector in the effort to
combat climate change, reducing overall carbon emissions by 15% by 2020
(smart2020.org). The workshop will provide an opportunity to explore
opportunities for ICT applications or services to reduce the environmental
impact of existing non-ICT processes.
This workshop is intended to bring together researchers from the
(traditional) SIGMETRICS community with researchers and practitioners in
relevant areas, to exchange technical ideas and experiences on how to
lessen the environmental impact of ICT, or how to utilize ICT to lessen
the environmental impact of other sectors. Improvements are to be
quantified in terms of sustainability metrics such as reduction of carbon
emissions. Improvements in sustainability should ideally also demonstrate
that acceptable Service Level Agreements (SLAs) can be maintained. This
workshop will serve as a forum for the SIGMETRICS community to apply
general measurement, analysis and modeling techniques to this important
area.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Measurement and evaluation of the sustainability of existing ICT systems
* Definition and demonstration of useful sustainability metrics
* Methods that systematically improve the efficiency of existing ICT
systems
* Tools that facilitate the design of more sustainable ICT systems
* Development of models that pertain to the sustainability of ICT systems
* Case studies of efforts to improve the sustainability of production ICT
systems
* Use of ICT systems to improve the sustainability of existing non-ICT
processes
Preference will be given to work on large-scale systems, e.g., entire data
centers or enterprise-scale applications.
Important Dates
* May 4, 2009: Paper Submission (hard deadline)
* May 18, 2009: Author Notification
* May 25, 2009: Final Versions Due
Submission Guidelines

ACM HotNets-VIII
October 22-23, 2009
New York City, NY
http://conferences.sigcomm.org/hotnets/2009/
Call for Papers
The Eighth ACM Workshop on Hot Topics in Networks (HotNets-VIII) will
bring together people with interest in computer networks to engage in
a lively debate on theory and practice of networking. Continuing the
HotNets tradition, the workshop will provide a venue for presenting
and discussing innovative ideas that have the potential to
significantly influence the community. The goal is to promote
community-wide discussions of those ideas.
We invite researchers as well as practitioners to submit a short
position paper describing such an idea. The paper could, for example,
expose a new problem, advocate a new approach, re-frame or debunk
existing work, report unexpected results from a deployment, or propose
new evaluation methodologies. We especially encourage submissions of
early-stage work and enticing but unproven ideas. Once fully developed
and evaluated, the work may be relevant to conferences such as
SIGCOMM, SOSP, SenSys, MobiCom, PODC, or Infocom.
HotNets takes a broad view of networking research. This view
encompasses all kinds of modern day computer networks, including (but
not limited to) home and enterprise networks, ISP networks, sensor and
personal area networks, wireless and acoustic networks, data center
networks, peer-to-peer networks, and disruption-tolerant networks. It
also encompasses all aspects of such networks, including (but not
limited to) resource management, economics and evolution, robustness
and security, mobility, interactions with applications, energy,
measurement and diagnosis, and hardware.
Position papers will be selected based on originality, likelihood of
spawning insightful discussion at the workshop, and technical
merit. Accepted papers will be posted online prior to the workshop and
a workshop summary will be published in ACM SIGCOMM's Computer
Communication Review (CCR), widely disseminating the ideas discussed
at the workshop.
Workshop Participation
HotNets is an invitation-only workshop. To ensure an interactive
atmosphere, attendance will be limited to around 60
people. Invitations will be extended per the following priorities:
* the Program and Steering Committees, one author per paper, and
any speakers invited by the Program Committee
* co-authors of accepted and submitted papers, preferring students
as available travel support allows
* event-sponsor representatives and additional authors of
submitted papers at the discretion of the Program Committee
Submission Instructions
Submitted papers must be no longer than 6 pages (10 point font, 1 inch
margins). All submissions must be blind: submissions must not indicate
the names or affiliations of the authors in the paper. Only
electronic submissions in PDF will be accepted. Submissions must be
written in English, render without error using standard tools (e.g.,
Acrobat Reader), and print on US-Letter sized paper. HotNets-VIII
reviews will follow standard academic practice, although some rejected
papers may not receive full-length reviews.

Betreff: [Tccc] 5th Mobicom Workshop on Challenged Networks (Chants 2009)
Datum: Tue, 21 Apr 2009 10:19:51 +0200
Von: May Martin <Martin.May(a)thomson.net>
An: <tccc(a)lists.cs.columbia.edu>
-------------------------------------------------------
CHANTS 2009
ACM MobiCom 2009 Workshop on Challenged Networks
--------------------------------------------------------
Beijing, China
September 25, 2009
http://www.thlab.net/chants2009
Scope:
------
Challenged networks are characterized by a heterogeneous mix of
nodes, nodal churn, intermittent connectivity, and widely varying
network conditions. Conventional Internet access in
performance-limited environments such as developing countries with
insufficient infrastructure and severe power shortage can be
regarded as challenged networks, as can be ad-hoc communication
between personal mobile devices; even an overlay network relying on
fixed infrastructure might be challenged by a high degree of churn.
Challenges are also posed by a very heterogeneous and potentially
resource limited nodes, such as mobile phones, space-based nodes,
and sensor and actuator nodes. Performance of the network paths
interconnecting such nodes can be highly unreliable and varying in
terms of bandwidth, latency, disruption characteristics and security
requirements.
The Internet protocol architecture suffers when used in a challenged
network setting. For example, when connectivity is intermittent, or
the link performance is highly variable or extreme, then one or more
of the traditional Internet protocols do not work well. In this
workshop following CHANTS 2008, CHANTS 2007, CHANTS 2006 and WDTN
2005, we wish to explore ongoing efforts in dealing with networks
that operate under significant challenges as exemplified above;
techniques for making applications tolerant to disruptions, churn
and high delays are also of interest.
The focus of this year's workshop will be on experiences with
challenged networks, such as experimental results, measurements,
implementations, full-system and large-scale simulations,
operational experiences, deployment problems, and applications for
challenged networks. We specifically solicit papers in these
respects for the following areas:
* Architecture, design and evaluation of systems that are robust to
high rates of nodal churn, unreliable infrastructure, and
intermittent connectivity due to for instance high mobility, power
saving.
* Characterization of performance and security challenges and
measurements of challenged networks; performance metrics and
measurements thereof; benchmark tests and scenarios of network
challenges.
* Protocol and application design and evaluation with respect to
robustness, security and privacy, as well as quality of service and
experience.
* Configuration, management, monitoring and adaptivity of systems for
challenged networks.
Submissions may include presentations of specific systems or
performance measurements, as well as architectural papers addressing
new concerns. Papers that bring out problems in the existing
proposals for challenged networks or that report operational
experience will be favored. Selected papers will be forward-looking,
will describe their relationship to existing work, and will have
impact and implications for ongoing or future research. We aim to
accept approximately 12 papers, and to have a highly interactive
workshop focusing on evolving this area of network research and
continuing to build its community.
In addition, we seek submission of demo proposals, also to be
reviewed by the TPC. The demo proposals shall present recent
practical results from the area of challenged networks. In
exceptional cases, where live demos are simply not practical to
present, poster or video presentations of practical results are
acceptable, too.
Paper Format and Submission:
----------------------------
Submitted papers must be no more than 8 pages long, two columns,
with no characters in smaller than 10 point fonts, and must fit
properly on US "Letter"-sized paper (8.5x11 inches). Margins must be
of 1 inch on all edges (top, bottom, left, and right) of each page.
Demo proposal abstracts (to be published as part of the proceedings)
shall not be longer than 3 pages plus 1 page description of the
precise setup and requirements.
All paper submission will be handled via EDAS. Papers will be
reviewed single blind. Click here to submit your paper via EDAS:

ACM U-NET'09 — User-provided Networking: Challenges and Opportunities

Rome, Italy, December 1, 2009

Submission Deadline: July 17, 2009

*Motivation*
This workshop is dedicated to the debate of concepts, challenges, and
opportunities concerning user-provided networking, i.e., scenarios where
users cooperate by sharing wireless resources as well as Internet services.
To provide a specific example that relates to Internet access
(connectivity),
the end-user (or a community of end-users) is a micro-operator in the sense
that he/she shares his/her subscribed broadband Internet access based on
some form of incentive scheme. In addition, the end-user may or may not
provide other network functionality such as local mobility management, or
persistent storage and forwarding services. This new role is disruptive
in what
concerns Internet service models, since there is no distinction between
what is
today known as end-user device and network device: in the future, end-user
devices will actively participate as part of the network. In contrast,
the Internet
has been up to now mostly the means for end-users to obtain some form of
network
service, originally related to connectivity, person-to-person
communication, or
information retrieval. Such user-centric provider role is also
disruptive given that
the regular network boundaries of trust have to be extended in a way
that should
mimic social behavior: there is the need to form networks of trust in
order to
accommodate a robust network growth, given that the key to such growth
is the
willingness to cooperate.
Another disruptive aspect of user-provided networking is that due to the
nature of
the wireless media and the way that humans move, support for intermittent
connectivity as well as fast and transparent roaming between
micro-operators needs
to be considered. Finally, and given that user-provided networking
spreads dynamically
having as network elements regular end-user devices, there is the need
to consider
cases where information is opportunistically relayed instead of routed
based on topological
information.
Due to the disruptive aspects mentioned, user-provided networking seem
to have the
potential to provide a paradigm shift in Internet communication models,
given that such
novel functionality allow wireless networks to operate in a completely
autonomic way and
also given that the end-user becomes a provider of Internet services
(e.g. connectivity) based
upon cooperation incentives or rewards and based upon his/her own
mobility and social
patterns. Services are established on the fly, and do not necessarily
imply the use of multihop
technology or routing. For instance, connectivity may be, in most cases,
simply relayed.
The workshop program will include presentations of peer-reviewed papers
and a discussion
panel with guests from industry and academia. We envision U-NET as a
forum aiming to ignite
a debate concerning technical challenges and impact (negatively or
positively) that
user-provided networking may have on Internet communication models.
