============================================================================ IEEE Network Magazine Special Issue on "Future Internet: New Applications and Emerging Services" (http://www.comsoc.org/livepubs/ni/info/cfp/cfpnetwork0710.html) ============================================================================ Background The Internet has been successfully deployed for several decades due to its high flexibility in running over different physical mediums and supporting different high layer protocols and applications including traditional file transfer, e-mail, and client-server based web applications. Meanwhile, we have witnessed the unprecedented development and growth of new applications and services in recent years ranging from peer-to-peer (P2P) based applications, image and video applications, location-based services, secured transactions, online hosting services, machine-to-machine (M2M) interactions, and cloud computing. These new applications and emerging services have, in different degree, demanded better than the current best-effort quality of service. The future Internet is expected to be more agile, scalable, secure and reliable, which has been considered and pursued in research projects such as NSF FIND (Future Internet Design) and GENI (Global Environment for Network Innovations) programs in the United States, and EIFFEL (Evolved Internet Future for European Leadership) and FIREworks (Future Internet Research and Experimentation - Strategy Works) projects in Europe. Such ever-emerging applications with different requirements and implications for the future Internet design pose a significantly new set of problems and challenges, which are not well understood, specifically : 1) how can they be efficiently provisioned in the future Internet? 2) how can the future Internet be evolved and/or re-designed possible with radical changes to cater for new applications and services? The goal of this special issue is to feature recent and emerging Internet applications and services, their performance, impact, demands and implications for future Internet design. Scope Papers should contain substantial tutorial content and be accessible to a general audience of researchers and practitioners. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to: *Peer-to-peer applications including file transfer, live video streaming and VoD *Utility computing, cloud computing, cloud storage networks *Online hosting services *E-commerce, secured transactions *Mobile services, location-based services *New service provisioning, quality of service issues *Impact on backbone and ISP design. Submission Guidelines This special issue solicits original work that must not be under consideration for publication in other venues. The manuscripts must be written in a tutorial manner and in English. Opportunistic networks are commonly defined as a type of challenged networks where communication opportunities are based on sporadic and intermittent contacts, disconnections and re-connections may frequently occur, and the assumption on the existence of an end-to-end path between the source and the destination is released. As compared to the legacy MANETs, where an always-connected infrastructure-less network is assumed, opportunistic networks are much closer to real pervasive networking scenarios, where devices (with sensing capabilities) are carried while users move, and can connect and disconnect continuously relying their communication chances on a store-carry-and-forward approach. The aim of MobiOpp 2010 is to bring together researchers working in this emerging area, thus also providing a reference event for those working on self-organizing wireless mobile networks which usually exploit the opportunistic communication paradigm. In this workshop we aim to explore novel research issues related to all aspects of opportunistic networks. Original contributions are solicited, being related to systems and protocols design, development and analysis, in all areas of Opportunistic Networking. Call for Papers: Special Issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing: Advancement of research in wireless access and mobile systems. --------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------------- Wireless access has matured and become a distinct research field in its own right. Recent roll-out of wide area true packet based systems such as UMTS and the increasing popularity of WLAN solutions in the enterprise as well as residential settings have led to a situation where multi homing and overlaid access networks are becoming a reality. Experience with such environments has recently prompted the discovery of previously unknown problems and the emergence of new research directions. In addition, the experience has made it possible to solidify and intensify research on traditional wireless network problems such as mobility management and location management. This special issue of the Journal of Parallel and Distributed Computing is seeking high-quality original unpublished research articles that describe recent advances in the understanding and modeling of wireless access and mobile network behaviour, findings of new problem areas, and solutions to address them. Topics of interest include but are not limited to: Wireless access:  MAC layer performance modeling  Wireless resource management  Wireless Network formation and planning  Mobility aspects and their impact on network performance  Location Management  Application behavior and QoS management  Multi-channel and multi-radio systems, channel assignment Submission guidelines: Authors are invited to submit manuscripts to http://ees.elsevier.com/jpdc. --------------------------------------------------------------------- The Sixth IEEE PerCom International Workshop on Sensor Networks and Systems for Pervasive Computing (PerSeNS 2010) http://www2.ing.unipi.it/persens in conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2010 (http://www.percom.org/) March 29-April 2, 2010 Mannheim, Germany --------------------------------------------------------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS Wireless sensor networks collect sensing measurements or detect special events, perform node-level processing, and export the combined data from their sensing nodes to the outside world. Sensing, processing and communication are three key elements whose combination in one small device is instrumental to pervasive computing and gives rise to countless applications. This workshop will provide a forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among researchers and professionals from industry and academia. Papers describing original research on both theoretical and practical aspects of sensor networks for pervasive computing are solicited. We particularly welcome submissions that present implementation and deployment results. Particular topics of interest include, but are not limited to: - Sensor-based systems and applications - Operating systems for Sensor Networks - Middleware and software tools - Networking architectures and protocols - Data gathering, aggregation and dissemination - Topology control - Power Management and energy-efficient design - Time synchronization - Location management - Sensor networks with mobile elements - Cross-layer architectures - Intelligent sensor nodes - Security and dependability issues - Modeling and performance evaluation - Measurements PAPER SUBMISSION Papers should contain original material and not be previously published or currently submitted for consideration elsewhere. Manuscripts must be limited to 6 pages in IEEE 8.5x11 conference format, and formatted in accordance with the IEEE Computer Society author guidelines . An oral presentation at the workshop is strictly required. Failure to present the paper at the workshop will result in the withdrawal of the paper from the Proceedings as well as from IEEE Xplore.
