--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The diffusion of lightweight, powerful portable devices, also enriched
with a
variety of sensing capabilities, is enabling new ways for users to
communicate,
and is laying the foundation for the ubiquitous networking idea to
become a
reality. Risen from the ashes of traditional MANETs, which failed to
cope with
the variability of a network solely made up from mobile users,
opportunistic
communications have recently stood out and gained a lot of research
attention.
Opportunistic networking is the enabling strategy for communications in
a mobile
network. The idea of opportunistically exploiting extemporary
contacts among
the users of the network poses new and challenging problems, as
well as
providing with novel and promising opportunities, to the networking
research
community. The AOC 2011 workshop will be a meeting point for people
working in
the area and it will constitute a forum to exchange ideas, discuss
solutions,
and share experiences among researchers, professionals, and
application
developers, both from industry and academia. The AOC 2011 workshop
will have a
primary interest in the new directions of opportunistic
communications
represented by mobile social networking, content-centric
networking, and
participatory sensing. More in general, papers tackling issues
related to
opportunistic networking and computing are welcome. Original papers
addressing
both theoretical and practical aspects of autonomic and
opportunistic
communications are solicited, as well as papers describing
prototype
implementations and deployments.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
* Architectures and models for autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Advanced technologies for enabling autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Tools and techniques for designing, analysing and building autonomic and
opportunistic networks
* Scaling laws and fundamental limits in autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Performance modeling of autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Autonomic and opportunistic communication testbeds and measurements
* Algorithms, models, and architectures for opportunistic computing
* Mechanisms, algorithms and testbeds for service provisioning in autonomic
and opportunistic networks
* Algorithms, models, and architectures for content centric autonomic and
opportunistic networks
* Mobile social networking in autonomic and opportunistic communications
* Participatory and urban sensing in autonomic and opportunistic networks
* Resource management techniques applied to autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Context and social awareness in autonomic and opportunistic networks
* Routing, transport, and reliability issues in autonomic and opportunistic
communications
* Techniques for data dissemination and replication in autonomic and
opportunistic networks

Elsevier Journal of Computer Communications Call for Papers
Special Issue on Convergence of Mobility, Networking, and Computing in
Cyber-Physical Systems
Scope
The convergence of cyber and physical spaces has transformed
traditional embedded systems into cyber-physical systems (CPS), which
are characterized by tight integration and coordination among
computing, networking, and physical processes. Examples of CPS
encompass a wide range of man-made systems such as avionics,
healthcare, transportation, automation, and smart grid systems. In
addition, the recent proliferation of smart phones and mobile Internet
devices, equipped with multiple sensors, can be leveraged to enable
mobile cyber-physical applications. In these systems, it is of
critical importance to properly resolve the complex interactions
between various computational and physical elements.
This special issue aims to identify emerging research topics in CPS
from the mobile communication and networking perspective. In
particular, by properly addressing complex interactions between cyber
and physical elements of CPS, we focus on challenging issues in
networking that need to be resolved for deriving eventual working
solutions for CPS. Topics of interest include (but are not limited to)
the following:
* Theoretical foundations of CPS
* Modeling, analysis, and simulation of CPS
* Architectures for CPS
* Emerging CPS applications
* Empirical case studies for CPS
* Security and privacy in CPS
* Energy-efficient design of CPS

IEEE Communications Magazine: Feature Topic on Traffic Management for
Mobile Broadband Networks
Call for Papers
With mobile terminals becoming the primary Internet devices for most
of the people in the world and smartphone users generating on average
10 times more traffic than other users, it is critical that Telco
operators and ISPs adopt smarter traffic management and pricing
strategies. Current forecasts expect mobile data traffic to grow by
300-500 times more over the next 10 years, whereas the capacity of
cellular infrastructure only doubles every 2 years. By 2020, more than
half of the revenue in the global broadband industry is likely to be
from two business models: wholesale and âtwo-sidedâ fees for
improved access capacity and quality. Those models require the
enforcement of stringent policy control mechanisms for bandwidth
management, QoS and service level agreements, according to subscriber
policies with real-time perspective on usage, location, device and
user type, radio access technology, network capacity and topology. In
this area, several research challenges are still to be addressed:
ï· How can the network be made service-, state- and/or context-aware
in order to apply specific policies to enhance the end user experience
(QoE)?
ï· How can the service provider bridge QoE and QoS, and change the
QoS level based on spending limits?
ï· How can different IP flows of the same packet data network (PDN)
be routed via different accesses? In addition, how is it possible to
move IP flows of the same PDN from one access to another for seamless
WLAN offload or for usage of WLAN access to connect to Internet
without traversing operator's core network?
ï· How can selected IP traffic be offloaded from the cellular
infrastructure and save transmission costs?
ï· How can mobile networks be optimized for mass machine-type
communications/applications?
ï· How to optimize the utilization of Digital Dividend (unprecedented
amount of spectrum that becomes available as a result of the
switchover from analog to digital terrestrial TV)?
This timely feature topic issue of IEEE Communications Magazine will
bring together researchers from industry, academia and standardization
bodies to present and analyze the above challenging issues in the
important area of managing traffic for existing and future mobile
broadband networks, i.e. within and beyond the existing
standardization frameworks (3GPP, 3GPP2, IEEE 802.16, etc.). We are
soliciting original research, analysis of live networks or test beds,
and survey articles written in a tutorial style, comprehensible to all
readers of the magazine. Submissions will undergo a rigorous peer
review process. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
ï· IP flow mobility, seamless WLAN / Femtocell offload and related
policy control
ï· Network enhancements, such as signaling management, local IP
access and selected IP traffic offload (internet traffic, corporate
traffic, etc.), packet scheduling and prioritization
ï· Network improvements for mass machine-type communications
ï· Compression, rate-adaptation and transcoding
ï· Device-based traffic management techniques
ï· Contention management and tuning TCP/IP
ï· Deep packet inspection, policy-based traffic shaping &
differential charging
ï· Segmentation by users, services, devices, technology, etc.
ï· End-to-end service assurance and QoE monitoring
ï· Caching, multicast and CDNs for http-based streaming and download
services
ï· Network operations, pricing and billing, network and service
management
ï· Software/middleware architectures and solutions
ï· QoS-oriented network planning
ï· Digital Dividend for mobile broadband services
Manuscript Submission and Schedule
Articles should be tutorial in nature and written in a style
comprehensible to readers outside the specialty of the article.
References should be limited to 10, figures and tables to a combined
total of 6 (mathematical equations should be avoided). Paper length
should not exceed 4,500 words. Complete guidelines can be found at
http://dl.comsoc.org/livepubs/ci1/info/sub_guidelines.html
.
All articles must be submitted through the IEEE Manuscript Central at
http://mc.manuscriptcentral.com:80/commag-ieee

ï· Full Paper Submission Deadline: 28 January 2011
ï· Decisions Notification: 22 May 2011
ï· Final Manuscripts Due: 30 June 2011

CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Issue of International Journal of Network Management on
Quality of Service Management in Emerging Wireless Networks
http://paws.kettering.edu/~cwu/qos-si-ijnm.html
Publication: Fall 2011
Quality of service of wireless networks refers to the collective service
performances with respect to the user expectation and the network
configuration. Over the years, the wireless networks have not only expanded
in their sizes, such as geographical area and number of nodes, but also in
the variety of services, users, and deployment environments. Small mobile
devices, such as smart phones, that allow instantaneous high speed
information access and data processing have radically changed the way of our
living.
Moreover, the development of ad-hoc networks allows the easy formation of
wireless networks for information sharing and data gathering. Due to
various factors, wireless networks are constantly changing. For example, the
service pattern, workload, available resources (power supply, bandwidth,
beacons,
nodes etc.) are not fixed. Therefore, it is important to be able to access
and manage the quality of services for ensuring the optimal performance of
the networks. There are basically two aspects to QoS study in wireless
networks. One aspect is accessing and diagnosing the status of the networks
and evaluating the current level of service quality. The other aspect is to
study the network design to handle the changing factors of the networks so
that the quality of service is optimized under the constraint of the
available resources and service pattern. The quality of service management
and diagnosis of a network is closely related to wide range of fundamental
issues such as network topology, routing protocols, resource allocation,
communication layer, and working environments etc. The contributed papers
will study both practical and theoretical models and algorithms for
ensuring the high quality of service in wireless networks and the approaches
for
quality of service evaluation and diagnosis.
This special issue of the International Journal of Network Management is
seeking new and unpublished contributions addressing issues in Quality
of Service Management in Emerging Wireless Networks including, but not
limited to:
* Fault diagnosis
* Diagnosis middleware
* Reconfigurable networks
* Performance evaluation
* QoS evaluation model
* Self-healing networks
* Adaptable resource management
* Network simulation platforms
* QoS-oriented network planning
* QoS-based routing protocols
* Data management
* Mobility management
* Security and privacy
Papers describing current research and practice are solicited.

=============================
Workshop on
Management of Cloud Systems (MoCS 2011)
(http://mocs.deis.unibo.it)
June 28th, 2011
Kerkyra (Corfu), Greece
organized in association with the
Fifteenth IEEE Symposium on Computers and Communications (ISCC 2011)
(http://www.ieee-iscc.org/2011)
Sponsored by (pending approval)
IEEE Computer Society and IEEE Communications Society
Endorsed by the IEEE Technical Committee on
Communications Systems Integration and Modeling (CSIM)
The vision of Cloud computing is becoming a reality thanks to the
recent advances in several significant computer and communications
research areas, spanning from grid/virtualization/utility computing to
Web 2.0 and Service Oriented Computing (SOC). After the initial hype,
at the current stage, several ongoing research efforts are focusing
on the several open management aspects of the Cloud, such as
interoperability, scalability, reliability, power management, and
confidentiality/auditability, with the final goal to make Cloud
technologies and services more mature so to boost and to facilitate
a more widespread industrial uptake of Cloud systems. Despite the
several recent efforts on Cloud systems, it is still unclear whether
current solutions are able to withstand the abrupt and unpredictably
changes imposed by the emergent Cloud application scenarios, where
services and the whole software stacks (from the kernel upward) have
to scale up and down fast by exploiting highly distributed and
heterogeneous virtualized resources.
The ambition and mission of MoCS 2011 is to put on the foreground all
above issues, and to bring together different ongoing research efforts
on the management of Cloud systems. This year, special focus will be
on the challenging management issues related to the delivery of
efficient Green computing solutions over the Cloud.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Novel adaptive management solutions for scalable, maintainable,
cost-effective Cloud provision, at all software stack layers;
* New models and paradigms for the management of Cloud services at the
host level and within/between data centres (intra-/inter-domain);
* Analytical and simulation models and tools to measure systems
ability to scale and to achieve relevant energy savings;
* New methods and tools able to identify and enforce optimal trade-
offs between performance, energy consumption, safety, and security;
* Emerging standards for interoperability (resource virtualization,
specific computing interfaces, etc.), also between public and
private Clouds;
* Experimentation testbeds, field trials and empirical evaluations,
and measurement studies.
