On one hand, autonomous applications embedded in automatic environments have rapidly expanded from classical industrial ones to applications where different modular devices, actuators and sensors interact closely and on the other hand communication technologies have also known a great growing development related to sensor networks, ad-hoc networks, wireless networks, etc. Healthcare and wellness applications such as helping elderly people, assisting dependent persons, habitat monitoring in a smart environment constitute some of the potential scenarios of convergence between robotic systems and network technologies. These applications, which are based on high-level commands and in order to accomplish some specific tasks, reveal new challenges regarding mechanic design, portability, acceptability, power support, control theory, etc. In addition to portability and low-power systems, which are vital challenges that limit substantially any successful robotic application, network paradigms should also take into account issues related to cost, scalability and security. This workshop will highlight the overlapping of these two domains of autonomous systems and network technologies devoted for different applications. Issues related to concepts, new technologies, and protocols will elicit particular attention. The workshop solicits papers addressing, but are not limited to, the following topics: - Autonomous manipulation using service robots - Architecture and protocol for wireless based sensor networks (energy efficiency, collision-free, low-power, etc.) - Pervasive communication in autonomous application fields - Rehabilitation robotics, exoskeletons, smart textile clothes and wearable robots applications - Context-awareness and ubiquitous robotics - Secure, scalable and low cost network paradigms applications - Techniques of sensing, actuation and recognition - Applications of Autonomous Behavior - Design modeling and control of autonomous robotic systems - Assistive robotic technology - Energy optimization of autonomous systems - Monitoring and security of autonomous systems in intelligent environment - Context awareness using sensor networks - Network based transmission architecture for controlling autonomous systems - Real-time network based structure using sensors, actuators and transducers, etc. All submitted papers will be rigorously reviewed and we will select papers based on their originality, timeliness, significance, relevance to the workshop. Real workload characterization and modeling provide key insights into the cost-effective design, operation, and management of Internet- based services and systems. Nevertheless, some of the most fundamental concepts and methods related to the characteristics of real Internet workloads are largely unknown to most Internet/Web practitioners. This is further aggravated by the limited availability of real representative workloads for analysis, either due to privacy restrictions imposed by service providers or due to the inherent limitations of partial/local workloads in face of the global nature of Internet applications. As a result, many Internet-based systems and services are designed and built without exploring the inherent properties of their workloads. This special issue of IC seeks original articles addressing relevant aspects of real Internet workloads, looking at measurement and collection of workloads, characterization and modeling. Ideally, wireless users want to have the same services and capabilities that they have commonly come to expect with wired networks. However, to meet these objectives, the wireless community faces certain challenges and need an excellent understanding of all aspects of wireless networks. Wireless networks are large complex entities. This complexity brings to the many problems, such as network planning, resource management, Quality of Service scheduling, congestion and flow control, connection admission control, and Medium Access Control. These problems are outside the traditional communications background. They can be properly addressed with methodologies such as optimization, estimation, adaptation, fuzzy control, games control, robust stability, distributed control, hybrid control. For instance, recently, there has been a surge in research activities that utilize optimization techniques to analysis and design wireless networks. The purpose of this special issue is to bring research papers addressing the theme of control and optimization for wireless networks. For example, with the intended roll out of new wireless broadband access networks, such as the Long Term Evolution (LTE) or WiMax, the interworking with existing 3G, 2G and WLAN access networks becomes crucial. Alongside the evolution of the wireline core network and emergence of new overlay control networks, such as the IP Multimedia System (IMS), intelligence in the wireless domain is also moving out of the different access networks into a common Evolved Packet Core (EPC). This workshop is intended to bring together academia and industry to debate on the research challenges related to integration and interworking of various access network technologies into an evolved packet core as well as the provision of multimedia services, such as voice and video services. While WSNs have been a subject of intensive research for about a decade, most research activities to date focus on sensor nodes that are deployed in static, pre-determined locations with sensor readings taken at regular intervals and with packet forwarding that take place in multiple hops to sinks where storage and analysis takes place. The next step for sensor networks is to handle mobility in all possible forms. Thus we need to consider the mobility of sinks, mobility of sensors and of actuators as well as the mobility of the applications and their software. This extension towards represents a recent research subject in sensor networking that opens up a new research opportunities and challenges, and significantly expands the types of applications for which WSNs can be used. This Special Issue therefore aims at identifying the benefits and challenges raised by mobility in WSNs, addressing the state of the art and advances in this particularly promising research area. The sensor technology promises multiple applications: from monitoring an environment in dangerous regions or enemy forces in a battlefield to controlling traffic in streets, inventory in storehouses and tracking patients in hospitals. On the one hand, small and cheap sensing devices create possibilities for gathering huge amounts of data in a non-intrusive way. On the other hand, actuators add a new network dimension and capabilities: the whole system can also react to the forthcoming events. Still, there are crucial questions which are not answered. Could we design a low-cost sensor technology which enables its massive and pervasive application? Could WSANs be really independent and intelligent systems performing their tasks autonomously without any external control? The goal of this workshop is to gather people from academia and industry and discuss the most emerging issues and future challenges in the area of WSANs. The topics of the workshop include but are not limited to: * Low cost, low-complexity, low-price sensor technology * Collaborative and distributed schemes * Self-organized networks * Biologically inspired WSANs * Localization and positioning algorithms * Routing and MAC protocols * Target detection, identification and tracking * Cross layer issues * Network coverage, connectivity, topology, deployment of nodes * Scalability, robustness, energy efficiency issues * Data aggregation schemes * Reliability, self-healing and recovery procedures * Monitoring and surveillance systems * Security and privacy issues * Mobile sensor and actuator networks * Dynamic network topologies * Sensor networks modelling and simulations * Prototypes, test-beds and field measurements * Sensor network applications Paper submission: Authors are kindly invited to submit the manuscripts prepared according to IEEE submission guidelines and not exceeding 8 pages. Submitted papers must be original works that has not appeared in and are not under consideration in any other conference or a journal. At least one of the authors must attend the AWSAN'10 Workshop and present their work in order to have the paper accepted.
