Applicants should be far enough into their PhD to have a concrete proposal, and have initially outlined the salient issues and proposed research methodology. Applicants should not be planning to submit their PhD thesis or dissertation for at least six months after the DC, so that any advice or input may still be incorporated into the doctoral work. The DC will be a one-day, seminar-style event, consisting of short presentations followed by roundtable discussion. Time will be allotted to each student not only for the presentation, but also for careful, in-depth consideration and discussion amongst the panelists and DC participants. In order to provide such individual attention, the number of accepted DC participants will be limited to twelve. SUBMISSIONS Topic scope is the same as that listed in the SenSys call for papers. DC submissions should consist of a single PDF document using the SenSys paper template. The document should contain the following: 1) Research summary (3 pages) describing the work in progress, and including a 100 word abstract. Things to consider for inclusion in the research summary might be: the expected contribution to the field of sensor networking; the original idea or thesis statement; the problem domain and the specific problem addressed; a brief overview of related work; the methodological approach; research carried out and results so far. 2) Student biographical sketch, including the names and affiliations of the research advisor(s), and expected date of dissertation submission. The submission site is http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=sensys2010doctoralcolloquium Research summaries will be reviewed by the chair and panel members. If accepted, a student may be expected to make clarifications and improvements to their research summary by the camera-ready deadline. Note that the research summaries will not be formally published, but hardcopies will be made available to colloquium delegates. REGISTRATION Accepted participants of the doctoral colloquium must register for Sensys (if applicable at the student rate), no additional fee will be charged for the participation in the doctoral colloquium. Participants can also apply for Sensys travel grants. Accepted participants of the doctoral colloquium in difficult financial situations who would otherwise not be able to attend, have the option of registering only for the doctoral colloquium at a rate of 120 USD. This does not cover participation in the main conference. We require a letter from the advisor of the student explaining the difficult financial situation. Due to our demands for higher data rate and more seamless connectivity, new technologies keep being developed and merchandised, including wireless sensor networks, wireless mesh networks, social networks, smart grid communications, etc. Therefore, many new problems have been proposed and most of which can be formulated as optimization problems. However, many such optimization problems do not have the corresponding good algorithms developed or they are so hard (usually classified as NP-hard) that no algorithm is available to find the optimal solution in polynomial time. Although it may be difficult to find the optimal solutions for these problems, we can still approximate the best solutions with reasonably good ones. When we focus on NP-hard problems and computation time is our concern, approximate algorithms are the good choice. Since the evolutionary computational approaches were developed in the past few decades, many works rely on the nature-inspired algorithms to do optimization. The relatively classical ones are Genetic Algorithm, Simulated Annealing, Artificial Immune System, Ant Colony Optimization, and Particle Swarm Optimization, etc. Some recently proposed algorithms include Harmony Search, Bee Algorithm, Bacterial Foraging Optimization, Group Search Optimization, Biogeography-based Optimization, Chemical ReactionOptimization, etc. This special issue is focused on highlighting the nature-inspired techniques to solve optimization for designing computer networks. They should demonstrate advantages or improvements in some aspects over the existing methods. The goal is to developnature-inspired approaches which enhance the adaptability, autonomicity, and scalability of any kinds of computer networks. We also welcome submissions that demonstrate real-world experience in and theoretical works on applying nature-inspired optimizationtechniques to networking research problems. However, at the current time, we lack a clear understanding of the interactions among the layers, and a comprehensive framework for cross-layer design in the network stack. Three kinds of contributions are welcome: • Long papers have up to 12 pages and present new scientific results and well-founded findings. • Short papers are up to six pages long and describe ongoing work and innovative aspects of projects. • Industry papers for the newly introduced Industry Track comprise about two pages. They present innovative projects, new technologies and trends from the industrial practice. Submitted long and short papers may not have been published or submitted elsewhere. Presentation languages are German and English. All submissions must meet the language and format requirements as specified on the conference website http://www.kivs11.de. Submissions will be reviewed by the program committee with regard to their content‘s quality and relevance to the conference.
