They have a considerable engineering, commercial and societal impact and pose numerous challenges to designers. One class of issues is the continuous offering of services in spite of various types of failures that are everyday events in networks. The increasing complexity, the participation of many different autonomous entities in the service provision, the lack of information, coordinated actions as well as governance makes this challenge increasingly difficult. In addition to a design of reliable network segments, server clusters etc., new technological issues like stability and failure management across heterogeneous autonomous systems arise. They also involve novel fields at the border of technology, business and society, like risk-awareness or influence of public policy. The goal of this issue is to present state of the art research contributions that focus on the reliable network-based services (RNS) provisioning. Contributions are invited from prospective authors with interests in the indicated special issue topics and related areas of application. All contributions should be of high quality, original, unpublished, and not submitted for publication elsewhere. The fast growth and adoption of virtualization and cloud computing technologies pose new management challenges that must be addressed. Although some virtualization techniques are already used in telecommunication networks, the full potential that can be achieved from a completely virtualized network environment is yet to be realized. A fully virtualized solution would be extremely flexible, allowing multiple networks to operate simultaneously over the same infrastructure, while supporting different technologies, protocols, topologies, and QoS/QoE requirements. The application of virtualization in mobile networks is an emergent topic of active research and its impact on resource, mobility, and network management as well as the associated security and autonomicity challenges are under investigation. These topics become even more complex with the increasing pressure for energy-efficient network systems. Most of the current literature focuses on a particular subset of these aspects, but does not tackle their interrelationships. We invite authors to submit papers reporting original, previously unpublished research which fill this gap and follow either evolutionary approaches based on current IP-centered architectures or introduce revolutionary designs and new paradigms. Experimental/testbed and empirical studies as well as implementation/industry results (including field trials) are also welcome. The submission format for the papers is an extended abstract, up to eight pages long. Please use 11 pt character size, one column text, double spacing, and letter paper. This page budget should contain all figures, tables, references, etc. The extended abstract should include a brief abstract of up to 150 words. The submission will be handled via EDAS. Only PDF files are acceptable; please make sure that the paper prints without problems (take care to embed all required fonts, etc.).
