LCN 2011
The 36th Annual IEEE Conference on Local Computer Networks (LCN)
http://www.ieeelcn.org
Hilton Hotel, Bonn, Germany
October 4 - 7, 2011
Paper registration: April 5, 2011
The IEEE LCN conference is the premier conference on the leading
edge of theoretical and practical aspects of computer networking.
LCN is a highly interactive conference that enables an effective
interchange of results and ideas among researchers, users, and
product developers. For the past 35 years, major developments from
high-speed local networks to the global Internet to specialized
sensor networks have been reported at this conference. We encourage
you to submit original papers describing research results or
practical solutions in leading edge topics.
Paper topics include, but are not limited to:
Ad hoc and sensor networks
Embedded networks
High-speed access networks
Home and SOHO networks
IPv6 deployment & migration
Local area networks
Optical networks
Green networking
Peer-to-peer networks
Personal and wearable networks
Storage area networks
Ubiquitous networking
Wireless networks
Adaptive applications
Authentication, authorization, accounting
Congestion and flow control
Cross-layer optimization
Location-dependent services
Mobility management
Multimedia and real-time communication
Network management
Network reliability and security
Network traffic characterization
Performance evaluation/engineering
Performance measurement and tuning
Quality-of-Service provisioning
Authors are invited to submit full or short papers for presentation
at the conference, describing original, previously unpublished work,
not currently under review by another conference, workshop, or
journal. Full papers (no more than 8 camera-ready pages, 10 pt font
in IEEE format) should present novel perspectives within the general
scope of the conference. Short papers are an opportunity to present
preliminary or interim results and are limited to 4 camera-ready pages
in length. Short papers will be presented in a poster format. Both
formats are published in the proceedings and IEEE Xplore. All papers
must include title, complete contact information for all authors,
abstract, and keywords on the cover page. IEEE reserves the right to
remove papers from IEEE Xplore that are not presented at the
conference.
Paper submission:
=================
Papers must be submitted electronically in PDF format to EDAS. Detailed
submission instructions have been posted on the conference website.
Important dates:
Paper registration: April 5, 2011
Paper submission: April 12, 2011
Notification of acceptance: June 30, 2011
Camera-ready paper due: July 28, 2011

WUWNet'11: The Sixth ACM International Workshop on UnderWater Networks
http://wuwnet.org/
December 1-2, 2011
Seattle, WA, USA
CALL FOR PAPERS
The oceans cover 71% of the Earth's surface and represent one of the
least explored frontiers; yet, the oceans are integral to climate
regulation, nutrient production, oil retrieval, and transportation.
Also, water systems in general are of vital importance to life on Earth
and commerce. For these reasons, there is significant interest in
monitoring aquatic environments for scientific, environmental,
commercial, safety, and military purposes.
WUWNet is the premier venue for early work bringing real-time, in-situ
sensing and actuation to this aquatic world. The goal of this workshop
is to bring together researchers and practitioners in areas relevant to
underwater networks. Thus, many layers of the communication stack - from
the physical layer to the application layer - will be represented. The
objective is to serve as a forum for presenting state-of-the-art
research, for exchanging ideas and experiences, and for facilitating
interaction and collaboration.
The workshop will span two days, including presentations of technical
papers, a keynote talk, a panel, and a poster/demo session. The scope of
the WUWNet workshop covers a broad range of research directions related
to underwater systems including communications, networking, system
integration, and vehicle coordination. Specific topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
- Underwater network architectures
- Efficient underwater communications, with techniques from the
physical layer to the application layer
- Cooperative underwater communications, including, PHY, MAC, routing,
and data transfer
- Services for underwater systems, such as localization, time
synchronization, reliable data transfer, security
- Subsea communication for underwater vehicles (gliders, submersibles,
etc.)
- Coordination algorithms for underwater vehicles and sensor nodes, or
human operator interaction
- Modeling, simulation, and testbeds for underwater systems
- Applications that broadly address subsea networks, including
coordinated vehicle systems
- Experimental results from underwater networking trials
- Application requirements for underwater networks presented by end users
SUBMISSION GUIDELINES
Submissions for technical papers must describe original research, not
published or currently under review for other workshops, conferences,
journals, or magazines.
All papers will be reviewed by the program committee for novelty and
contribution. The workshop accepts two types of papers: full and short.
Short papers may represent less mature work than full papers, or may
contain new ideas for future research. Full papers should be more
complete in their treatment of the topic. All accepted papers, full and
short, will be published in the workshop proceedings.
Paper submission will be handled electronically. Authors should prepare
a PDF version of their papers. The page limit for full papers is 8
pages, and that for short papers is 5 pages in standard ACM conference
format. Please see the workshop website for definitive formatting
guidelines and sample templates.
Furthermore, this year WUWNet will also have a "Demo/Doctoral
Symposium," which will provide a forum for both graduate and
undergraduate students working on research topics relevant to WUWNet to
discuss their goals, methods, and results at an early stage in their
research. A 2-page extended abstract (in standard ACM conference format,
with the student as first author) must be submitted by the deadline
provided below.
Last, but not least, a call for work-in-progress posters and demos will
be announced separately.

Call for papers: Special Session on Urban Sensing at the 26th
International Symposium on Computer and Information Sciences (ISCIS
2011)
The 26th International Symposium on Computer and Information Sciences
(ISCIS 2011) will be held in London at the Royal Society, on September
26-28, 2011 and is organised by Imperial College.
We are calling for papers on a special session focusing on urban sensing.
The emergence of the smartphones as a multi-purpose computing platform
has been one of the most exciting technological developments of recent
years.
These devices have a computing power which several years ago was
associated with desktop computers, and have a collection of integrated
sensors ranging from cameras and arrays of microphones to GPS,
accelerometers and gyroscopes. They often maintain a permanent
infrastructure-based internet connection, but they can also
participate in peer-to-peer communication using WiFi in infrastructure
or ad-hoc mode, Bluetooth and near-field communication. The always on
/ always available usage pattern of these devices ensures that their
penetration and mobility follows that of their users, providing full
coverage of the urban areas of the developed world, and rapidly
expanding to the developing countries.
Urban sensing is an emergent field of computing which takes advantage
of these capabilities to develop applications with high social and
economic value.
We are requesting high quality, research or applications papers on
topics associated with urban sensing. Papers which dealing with the
following aspects are especially encouraged:
The sensing aspect: What type of observations can the sensor make and
how can the data be collected and validated? How can we draw
inferences, make predictions and take actions based on the collected
data? Distributed approaches which store and process the data
in-network are of a special interest.
The social aspect: What is the relationship of the owner of the
smartphone to the data and to the other participants? How are the
interests of the providers of the services and beneficiaries of the
services reconciled? Approaches based on both altruistic (e.g. citizen
computing) and self-interested (e.g. market based) models are of
interest. What is the relationship between the collaboration implied
by urban sensing to the social networks of the participants? Agent
based models of the social and cultural aspects of urban sensing are
of special interest.
The networking aspect: What are the networking architecture
implications of urban sensing? What are the relative benefits of peer
to peer vs. infrastructure based communication? Investigations into
non-traditional communication technologies - such as proximity based
or opportunistic communication are especially encouraged.
The security and privacy aspect: What are the security and privacy
risks associated by participating in urban sensing? What attack
scenarios can a malicious participant use to falsify the resulting
data and how can the system defend against such attacks? How can we
negotiate the trade-off between the privacy cost and societal benefits
of applications?
Authors are invited to submit original research papers that have not
been published or submitted elsewhere. All papers will be peer
reviewed and evaluated on the basis of technical quality, relevance,
significance, and clarity. The Proceedings of ISCIS 2011 will be
published in the Springer Lecture Notes notes on Electrical
Engineering, known as LNEE. Also, an extended and revised version of
the best papers will be considered for publication in The Computer
Journal.
Please submit your paper via Easy Chair at the following web address:
http://www.easychair.org/conferences/?conf=iscis2011
The authors should add the keyword "Urban sensing" to the submission.

Subject and Purpose of the Workshop
We lately witness a tremendous development in the wireless sensor networking
(WSN), which make it possible to monitor, unobtrusively and for long periods
of time the physical environment. Ensuring high connectivity within the
network is vital for real applications. Moreover, for many applications,
sensor networks cannot operate in complete isolation. There must be a way
enabling a monitoring entity or some end-users to gain access to the data
produced by the sensor network, and even to interact with a particular
sensor mote to activate/deactivate it, read the sensed values
instantaneously, fix some inner parameters, make dynamic code loading into
the mote, etc. By connecting the sensor network to an existing network
infrastructure such as a local-area network, a private intranet, mobile
network infrastructures, unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs), and notably the
global internet, gaining remote access to the sensor network would be
straightforward.
The integration of RFID and WSN is one of the most promising technologies
that will play an important role in emerging the Internet of the Things
(IoT). For example, in a healthcare application, RFID tags can be used to
track the elders whereas the sensors are used to monitor the elders’
conditions. However, many questions need answers, and many challenges must
be tackled before such interconnection becomes effective. Suitability of IP
standards must be investigated, as well as the connection architecture. By
openly connect a sensor network to other networks, doors will be opened to
new vulnerabilities. An intruder would not need to gain physical access to
the network anymore, but it might remotely launch attacks. Security is thus
a very important aspect that must be considered. Routing, QoS, and
interoperability are also important and challenging issues in the new
heterogeneous systems.
Connecting different WSNs is another issue that needs to be considered. A
WSN might get partitioned into distinct segments due to battery exhaustion
of many sensors. Providing mechanisms to restore connectivity by connecting
those segments is of high importance. Also, an isolated segment of sensor
nodes that cannot reach its sink can exploit the existence of a neighboring
reachable WSN to deliver its sensed information.
This workshop is a forum for researchers, academics, and industrials to
debate the different issues related to the interconnection of wireless
sensor networks, and discuss relevant theoretical and practical solutions.
Topics
Topics of the workshop consist of all aspects related to WSN, with more
focus on the interconnection and integration of WSN to other networks, as
well as the connection between WSNs and connectivity issues. They include
but are not limited to:
- Interconnection architecture aspects
- Sensor deployment and connectivity issues
- Integration of WSN and RFID
- Interconnecting sensor and actor networks
- Interconnecting WSN and fixed network
- InterconnectingWSN and mobile network (e.g., GSM, UAV; etc.)
- Interconnecting onboard vehicular sensors and fixed
infrastructure (V2I)
- Integration of Body area networks to WLAN and beyond
- Testdeds for integrated networks
- Authentication, vulnerability, protection, and security issues
- Fault-tolerance and dependability of WSN
- Quality of Service (QoS) issues
- Routing and network protocols
- Medium access control protocols
- Transport protocols for congestion control, and Middlewares
- Integrated applications and services for cross networks
- In-network processing and aggregation
- Location and time services
- Integration of sensor networks and web-based services
