************ CALL FOR PAPERS ******************
----------- (WMCNT 2011) --------------
IEEE 3rd International Workshop on
Mobile Computing and Networking Technologies
http://wmcnt.ntua.gr
5-7 October 2011
Budapest, Hungary
Scope
=====
The Third IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and Networking
Technologies (WMCNT2011) will take place in conjunction with the IEEE
International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control
Systems (ICUMT 2011) to be held in Budapest, Hungary, in October 2011. The
Workshop will be a full day event. Continuing the great success of the
previous events, WMCNT 2011 Workshop is anticipated to attract a large
number of high-quality submissions and stimulate the cutting-edge research
discussions among academic pioneering researchers/scientists and industrial
engineers/leaders from all around the world.
Overview
========
Mobile computing and networking have inarguably emerged among the most
vibrant areas in the field of telecommunications today. Customers’
requirement for immediate response to their prerequisites, targeting on
access to information anywhere in the world at anytime, has increased the
demand for productivity and effectiveness of mobile computing and
networking. Moreover, the convergence of information communications
technology and computing is creating new demands and opportunities for
ubiquitous computing via wireless and mobile equipment without
technological
restrictions. Considering also the diversification of access technologies
and their applications that prevail in the present telecommunication
environment, amalgamated with the increased user mobility makes QoS
provision a challenging issue.
Future mobile communication networks offer a variety of high quality
applications. Furthermore, several challenges are imposed by the demanding
wireless networking environment, in terms of network architecture, channel
estimation, propagation and especially radio resource management. The
understanding of these issues becomes even more demanding due to
non-uniform
spectrum allocation, various radio resource management policies, economic
concerns, the scarcity of radio resources, the inherent transmission
impairments of wireless links and user mobility.
The aim of the Third IEEE International Workshop on Mobile Computing and
Networking Technologies (WMCNT 2011) is to provide an international venue
for the discussion of architecture, design, implementation, analysis,
measurement, performance and simulation in wireless, mobile and ubiquitous
computing environments. WMCNT 2011 will serve as an open forum, where novel
ideas will be exchanged via bringing together researchers, developers and
engineers in both academia and industry.

Satellite workshop of the GIIS conference
August 4-6, 2011, Da Nang, Viet Nam
(http://www.giis2011.org/GIIS2011/index.htm)
****************************
Today's mobile terminals are equipped with more than one network
interface such as Wi-Fi, 3G/4G, Wi-Max and Ethernet. The variety of
access technologies offer users a great deal of flexibility to connect
to the Internet. Multi-homing and mobility are becoming the focal point
in protocol design. Mobility support allows users to be constantly
connected, even when they are on the go. Multi-homing utilizes resources
from the available interfaces in an efficient manner. Depending on the
access technology associated with each interface, a mobile host can be
connected to the Internet by an infrastructure network or through an
ad-hoc network.
Many protocols have been proposed for mobility and multi-homing support.
Mobile IP, vertical handover and cross-layer design are mainly proposed
for mobility in infrastructure-based networks. Multipath TCP, Stream
Control Transmission Protocol, Multiple Care-of-Address registration,
Level 3 Multi-homing Shim Protocol for IPv6 are solutions for
multi-homing. Routing protocols are the major means to provide mobility
in ad-hoc networks. In designing protocols for the future Internet, we
will need to take into account not only mobility and multi-homing
requirements, but also their potential impact on quality of service,
resiliency and security of the communications.
The workshop is an opportunity for researchers working on multi-homing
and/or mobility for the future Internet to present scientific results,
exchange experiences and highlight future directions. The main topics of
interest include but are not limited to:
- Multi-homing protocols at transport and network layers
- Mobility management architecture and protocols
- Performance evaluation of multi-homing and mobility management protocols
- Impacts of multi-homing and mobility on Quality-of-Service
- Security issues related to multi-homing and mobility
- Cross-layer design for multi-homing and mobility support
- Management of horizontal and vertical handovers
- Algorithms for multi-homing and mobility management
- Algorithms for interface selection
- Algorithms for bandwidth aggregation and performance optimization
- Mobility support in infrastructure mode and ad-hoc mode and their
relationships
- Ad-hoc or mesh networks as a new type of access networks
Accepted papers will be published in the proceedings of the MMFI workshop.

Call for Papers
for a Special Issue of
IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems
(TPDS)
on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS)
IEEE Transactions on Parallel and Distributed Systems (TPDS) is seeking
original
manuscripts for special Issue on Cyber-Physical Systems (CPS), scheduled
to be
published in the September issue of 2012. Although significant advances
have been
achieved over the last decades in several fields of science and
engineering, and especially
in the areas of distributed computing, sensing, data collection and
internet-connection of
large scale object networks, it is mainly the coordination and tight
link between
computational, virtual and physical resources that will drive the
potential of having a
pervasive effect in the citizens everyday life, satisfying various needs
and also creating new
opportunities for the introduction of services that will enhance the
Quality of Life of the
society as a whole. Research advances in cyber-physical systems promise
to transform
our world with systems that will far exceed those of today in terms of:
effectiveness,
adaptability, autonomicity, energy efficiency, precision, reliability,
safety, usability,
scalability, stability and user-centric applicability. Moreover,
recently the Sensor Web
concept came into foreground, aiming at combining distributed sensing
with the ubiquitous
connectivity and accessibility of the web, therefore facilitating the
close interaction of digital
world with physical world.
Cyber-physical systems find direct applicability in a wide range of
areas and disciplines,
including for instance (but not limited to):
a) Smart Grid technologies:
that aim at facilitating a reliable and efficient delivery of
electricity to consumers using
two-way digital communications and security technologies, which allows
utility providers
and consumers to constantly monitor and control the delivery network as
well as electricity
consumption for the purpose of energy saving, cost reduction, and
reliability enhancement;
b) Wireless sensing, monitoring and networking:
to enable distributed monitoring systems of numerous smart sensors and
actuators,
mobile devices, RFIDs, robots etc., which revolutionize a variety of
application areas with
unprecedented density, fidelity, and scalability of environment
instrumentation;
c) Vehicular cyber-physical systems and intelligent transportation systems:
that integrate computing, communication, and storage capabilities with
monitoring and
control of vehicles in the physical world to deal with the grand
challenges of safe, green,
and efficient transportation.
The technical challenges are significant, and of high research and
practical importance,
mainly stemming from the fact that traditionally different groups of
scientists deal with this
setting without much interaction, using disjoint sets of techniques.
Towards merging the
two main and different features of those systems, that of
information-centric character and
node-centric physical world connectivity, well-defined analytical
models, methodologies and
experimental validations are required of how to build such systems
capable of coping with
the entire chain of operations and orchestrating the various parts
together in a flexible,
efficient and economic way.
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to the following:
* Architectural framework for distributed CPS
* Resource Management in large scale CPS
* Smart Grid Technologies
* Security, privacy, scalability, and reliability issues
* Design and cross-layer optimizations
* Vehicular CPS and intelligent transportation systems
* Novel monitoring applications with sensors, actuators,
smart phones, robots, and other wireless mobile devices
* Distributed and scalable monitoring systems
* Evaluations and filed trials of CPS and solutions
