These PSNs have special requirements, when compared to regular networks. The main concerns in establishing public safety networks are their facility to be deployed rapidly and their survivability. Other important characteristics of this kind of network is that their requirements may change radically, depending on the nature of the particular disaster. These networks are always mission critical and once deployed, PSNs have to be reliable since lives may depend on them. Recent global disasters have dramatically demonstrated that network structures can be severely affected, either directly by the disaster itself (where the existing infrastructure is damaged or destroyed) or by the following public reaction (overloaded networks caused by the need to communicate with friends and family). “Historically, major disasters are the most intense generators of telecommunications traffic”. For these reasons, the regular public networks alone are often not enough to support rescue and relief operations on their own. In addition to the stated problems of equipment failures and lack of connectivity, it must be understood that various different communication technologies are currently used for public safety communication, and it is common to find that each first responder group favours their own preferred technology. For example, TETRA, Analogue Radio Networks or GSM are used for voice communication, while data transmission for localisation, sensor information transfer and video streaming are currently not widely used in public safety. Local public safety agencies also have to communicate more and more with complimentary agencies such as other first responders, law enforcement groups, hospitals and even military authorities. As a direct consequence of the differing technologies in use at the same time PSNs are often not interoperable, which may represent a problem in the case of a catastrophe. Unfortunately existing communications networks are not always reliable during incidents or dangerous interventions. The deployment of new, ad hoc, dedicated, networks for Public Safety has been a long held dream, but technical, cost and management concerns create real problems. Finally, the scope of possible sensor use in PSNs is broad; it can include intrusion detection, where one can use different types of sensors to recognise potential hazard situations (e.g. by means of the detection and tracking of abnormal behaviours using Computer Vision-based techniques), to the integration of different technologies used by the intervention teams in the advent of a catastrophe. Sensors can also be used during and after incidents to measure the physical environment and report from a distance in areas that are too dangerous for direct human monitoring. For example, most cell phones nowadays provide high speed data access, still and video cameras, PDA functionality, etc. These advances in device sophistication and service offerings, including wireless hotspots, have made a difference in the way we communicate. With increased user mobility and user's desire to always be connected, we have seen a growing interest in Personal Area Networks (PANs) and Body Area Networks (BANs). These networks can be tuned and applied meaningfully for individual users and their requirements. On the other hand the Internet has changed our way of interacting dramatically. These two major communication areas are having an in-depth influence on the way we communicate; it is worth considering them 'together' as the future communication vehicle. > Personalized Networks is one such future oriented concept where we seek to bring BANs, PANs, WLAN, sensor networks, ad hoc networks, home networks, vehicular networks and the Internet together onto one platform under one broader vision of future (4G) communication networks and the Internet of Your Things. The idea is to enable continuous and seamless connectivity of all the personal devices of a user, information sources, and network enabled controllers in an unobtrusive way, regardless of where these entities are located - be they local or remote. It is a microcosm of the persons themselves with their associated accessories somewhere on the Internet. It is equivalent to the Internet presence that has become a prominent concept in the last decade. This advanced overlay network is strongly person oriented and must be ad hoc, intelligent and must behave as a user-friendly virtual intelligent personal assistant to its owner. It is a personal distributed environment, global in scope that can co-exist on the present day Internet with its active participation. Such a platform enables many new applications, especially for users with rapidly changing communication demands that often operate in various contexts simultaneously. It can also provide the much needed user-friendliness to many services of today. > There are numerous issues which are challenging to the communication network community in realizing a Personalized Network. Most of them arise from the lack of current technology to deal in a transparent way with the dynamic and mobile nature of the entities, the unpredictable topology of the network, the power constraints of the mobile devices, and the heterogeneity of the networking and link-level technologies. Therefore, creating a Personalized Network yields new architectures, protocols, algorithms, platforms, middleware, etc. They take care of addressing, routing, resource and service discovery, the self-organization of the network, the localization of the devices/person, the complex security and privacy requirements, the offering of context aware services and service management. Many of these issues, ventured upon earlier under various mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and mobile network research initiatives, need to be reconsidered in this case. During MobiCom, demos will be judged by an evaluation committee and one will be selected for the Best Demonstration Award. Demos will primarily be judged on originality, execution, and illustration of the core research ideas. Submission Instructions Submit a summary of the proposed demo via email to xizhang(a)ece.tamu.edu. The proposal should be maximum of 3 pages, including figures if needed, and in PDF format only. Please indicate “MobiCom 2011 Demo Submission” as the subject of the email. All submissions will be acknowledged.
