-------------------- CALL FOR PAPERS -----------------
Smart Communication Protocols and Algorithms (SCPA 2011)
December 5-9, 2011, Huston, Texas (USA)
In conjunction with Globecom 2011
http://scpa.it.ubi.pt/
Selected papers will be invited to the Special Issue on Smart Protocols and Algorithms of the International Journal Network Protocols and Algorithms (ISSN 1943-3581)
Communication protocols and algorithms are needed to communicate network devices and exchange data between them. The appearance of new technologies usually comes with a protocol procedure and communication rules that allows data communication while taking profit of this new technology. Recent advances in hardware and communication mediums allow proposing new rules, conventions and data structures which could be used by network devices to communicate across the network. Moreover, devices with higher processing capacity let us include more complex algorithms that can be used by the network device to enhance the communication procedure.
Smart communication protocols and algorithms make use of several methods and techniques (such as machine learning techniques, decision making techniques, knowledge representation, network management, network optimization, problem solution techniques, and so on), to communicate the network devices to transfer data between them. They can be used to perceive the network conditions, or the user behavior, in order to dynamically plan, adapt, decide, take the appropriate actions, and learn from the consequences of its actions. The algorithms can make use of the information gathered from the protocol in order to sense the environment, plan actions according to the input, take consciousness of what is happening in the environment, and take the appropriate decisions using a reasoning engine. Goals such as decide which scenario fits best its end-to-end purpose, or environment prediction, can be achieved with smart protocols and algorithms. Moreover, they could learn from the past and !
use this knowledge to improve futur
e decisions.
In this workshop, researchers are encouraged to submit papers focused on the design, development, analysis or optimization of smart communication protocols or algorithms at any communication layer. Algorithms and protocols based on artificial intelligence techniques for network management, network monitoring, quality of service enhancement, performance optimization and network secure are included in the workshop.

Special Issue on Reactive Sensor Networks
Scope
A common assumption in Wireless Sensor Networks is that they comprise
resource-constrained static nodes which sense their environment
and then send their measurements to a central base station through mutihop
routing. Soon, it was realized that this network organization
leads to rapid energy exhaustion of sensors around the base station since
these nodes should relay all the traffic destined for the base station.
In addition, the passive nature of static sensors which can only sense and
are unable to move is not always helpful in target-tracking scenarios
or in cases where real-time action is necessary for handling emergency
situations. Apparently, a reactive (dynamic) behavior from these networks
would be effective for dealing with a number of changing operational
conditions (e.g. node failures, energy exhaustion in some nodes) or
with real-time events.
This Special Issue will focus on all forms of reactive behavior that can be
incorporated in the functionality of a Wireless Sensor Network and
will also identify new possibilities, opportunities and challenges deriving
from this new paradigm. Topics of interest include but are not
limited to:
- Sink mobility in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Wireless Sensor Actuator Networks
- Wireless Sensor Networks with mobile sensors
- Re-tasking in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Mobile agent based solutions in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Node redeployment techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks for improved
connectivity and/or coverage
- Re-clustering techniques in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Dynamic MAC and routing protocols in Wireless Sensor Networks for
increased network lifetime
- Reactive methods in Underwater Wireless Sensor Networks
- Reactive methods for target tracking in Wireless Sensor Networks
- Dynamic techniques for data aggregation/fusion in Wireless Sensor
Networks
- Security, trust and privacy in Reactive Sensor Networks

SUMMARY
=======
The traditional centralized wireless and mobile networks are mainly
based on single-hop architecture and rely on fixed infrastructure such
as base stations or access points. The proliferation and deployment of
radio access networks such as Wireless WANs, Wireless LANs, Wireless
PANs, ad hoc networks, and wireless sensor networks with
distinguishing characteristics of data rate, coverage range, power,
mobility, and prices will clearly lead to a need for seamless and
ubiquitous access across these various networks. Such an integrated
heterogeneous environment enables a user to access a particular
network depending upon the application needs and the types of radio
access networks (RANs) available. The heterogeneous multi-hop wireless
and mobile networks, on the other hand, provide unlimited mobility and
greater flexibility but introduce a number of challenges due to
dynamic network topology. The design of efficient and scalable
protocols for existing multi-hop wireless and mobile networks such as
wireless and mobile ad hoc networks continue to pose challenges at all
the layers of networking stack. Therefore, it is necessary to aim at
heterogeneous architectures and services that together provide
seamless integration of single-hop as well as multi-hop mobile ad hoc
networks.
The aim of this workshop is to bring together the research community
in order to have a forum for discussion and technical presentations on
the latest research and future research directions in heterogeneous
multi-hop wireless and mobile networks. We are seeking original and
previously unpublished research papers addressing theoretical and
application issues in heterogeneous multi-hop wireless mobile
networks.

Workshop on Greening urban mobility with applications of Intelligent
Transportation Systems (Green ITS 2011)
in conjunction with the 11th International Conference on
Telecommunications for Intelligent Transport Systems (ITST-2011)
St. Petersburg, Russia, 23-25 August 2011
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Call for Papers
Scope:
In the 21st century about 90% of the population growth will be in urban
areas. These will account for 60% of the population and 80% of the
wealth. Hence, the future patterns of energy demand will increasingly be
determined by urban networks. Transportation operations, both passenger
and freight, typical account for almost 50% of urban energy use. Within
this challenging context, Intelligent Transportation Systems provide new
and innovative ways for the reduction of transport induced emissions and
the facilitation of green urban mobility. The objective of this workshop
is to disseminate the best research results from cross-disciplinary
researchers working on Intelligent
Transportation Systems towards the achievement of greener urban mobility
systems.
Submission:
Submissions of papers related to all aspects of Intelligent
Transportation Systems for green urban mobility, including passenger,
freight and multimodal transport, are welcome. Both novel theoretical
approaches and practical, real world applications will be covered.
Papers with the following emphasis are of particular interest:
- Eco-friendly mobility systems
- Environmental friendly dynamic traffic management
- Green Info-mobility
- Cooperative systems
- Realâtime data collection and processing
- Simulation models and computational issues
- Embedded applications
Proceedings:
Accepted papers will be published in ITST-2011 proceedings and IEEE
Xplore and will be indexed in relevant databases. Papers must be
submitted via EDAS (http://edas.info//N10341). The total length of a
paper should not exceed 6 pages formatted according to the IEEE
Template. Submission of a regular paper implies that at least one of the
authors will have a full registration to the Conference and present the
paper upon the acceptance of the submission.
Special Issue:
Authors of selected high-quality papers will be invited to submit
extended versions of their work for possible inclusion into a special
journal issue.
Workshop Co-Chairs:
- Periklis Chatzimisios, Department of Informatics, Alexander
Technological Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (perisATit.teithe.gr)
- Evangelos Mitsakis, Centre for Research and Technology Hellas,
Hellenic Institute of Transport (emitATcerth.gr)
- Theodoros Kosmanis, Department of Vehicles, Alexander Technological
Educational Institute of Thessaloniki (kosmanisATvt.teithe.gr)
Papers submission: 24 June, 2011 (firm deadline)
Notification of acceptance: 8 July, 2011
Camera ready manuscript: 15 July, 2011
Conference dates: 23-25 August, 2011
