It welcomes original, high-quality works on different perspectives, including performance analysis and simulation, algorithms and protocol design, optimization theory and application, information theoretic analysis including capacity scaling, for all forms of wireless networks: cellular, metropolitan, ad hoc, delay-tolerant, mesh, sensor networks as well as any combination of these. Contributions to the symposium should improve the state-of-the-art in design, analysis, dimensioning and operations of wireless network by providing insights into theoretical aspects as well as providing practical methods and tools. All forms of wireless networks are of interest: from cellular wide-area and local-area networks to dense and sparse ad-hoc networks; domain specific vehicular, public-transport and personal-area networks as well as application-specific sensor networks. Technical papers describing original, previously unpublished research, not currently under review by another conference are solicited. Topics of relevance include, but are not limited to, the following ones: *Asymptotic system properties, e.g., capacity, connectivity, coverage, delay *Cognitive radios *Cross-layer design and optimization *Dynamic spectrum management *Energy efficiency *Game theoretic models, contract, pricing, and incentives *Interference in wireless networks *Mobility modeling and management *Modeling, simulations, and performances analysis *Network and multi-user information theory *Network protocol design *Opportunistic and cooperative communications *Optimal control of network operations *Optimization of network design *Routing protocols *Scalability and manageability of network architectures *Security in wireless networks Submissions Authors are invited to submit original and unpublished research papers. The length of the manuscripts will be limited to 8 pages (IEEE conference double column style). Please use 10 pt character size, double column text. The submission will be handled via EDAS system (http://edas.info/). Only PDF files are acceptable; please make sure that the paper prints without problems (take care to embed all required fonts, etc.). All submissions will be evaluated for originality, significance, clarity, and soundness. Each paper will be reviewed by at least two to three researchers in the topic area. At least one author of each accepted paper is required to register and present the paper at the conference. Wireless mesh networks are expected to be a key element of this future by providing a highly scalable, reliable and cost-effective wireless backbone to mobile devices, through a multi-hop wireless communication system. Although significant advances have taken place in the last few years, open questions and technical challenges still remain, in addition to how wireless mesh networks will integrate with and/or influence existing mobile and fixed broadband networks in order to create an integrated infrastructure that supports emerging services. Especially interesting are recent developments in the area of community mesh networks or carrier grade mesh networks. This workshop aims to bring together technologists researchers who share interest in the area of wireless mesh networks. The main purpose is to promote discussions on recent advances in the analysis, design and implementation of systems, protocols and services for next generation mobile mesh networks. It also aims at increasing the synergy between academic and industry professionals working in this area. Opportunistic networking opens up many possibilities but also poses countless new challenges. A CR network aims to support highly reconfigurable devices that are capable of sensing the current environment, and adapting the transmission parameters to the specific scenarios, also based on the Quality of Service (QoS) requirements of the applications. The potential deployment of CR networks has been further augmented through various standardization activities supported by the IEEE (e.g. IEEE 802.22, IEEE 802.16h, IEEE 802.11y), and directives of spectrum regulatory agencies (e.g. the FCC in US). These efforts have opened portions of the spectrum for opportunistic spectrum access and laid down rules for sharing the spectrum, so that communication in novel and promising application domains, like smart-grid and Machine-to-Machine (M2M) domains, as well as communication in critical scenarios, like vehicular networks, public safety networks, emergency networks, are supported. However, to fully realize the potential of CR networks, there is a need to draw the attention of the research community for developing advanced, context-based and innovative methodologies, techniques and algorithms possibly inspired by multi-disciplinary research fields. According to the vision underlying the IoT, the next step in increasing the ubiquity of the Internet, after connecting people anytime and everywhere, is to connect inanimate objects. By providing objects with embedded communication capabilities and a common addressing scheme, a highly distributed and ubiquitous network of seamlessly connected heterogeneous devices is formed, which can be fully integrated into the current Internet and mobile networks, thus allowing for the development of new intelligent services available anytime, anywhere, by anyone and anything. Such a vision is also becoming known under the name of Machine-to-Machine (M2M), where the absence of human interaction in the system dynamics is further stressed. Many applications with high social and business impact fall under the IoT/M2M umbrella, including personal healthcare, smart grid, surveillance, home automation, intelligent transportation, while it is expected that new ones will emerge once the enabling technologies reach a stable state. At the moment, two of the most important challenges are: 1. According to the UN State of the World Population 2007 report, sometime in the middle of 2007, the number of people living in cities and towns has overtook the number of people living in the rural areas and this event was recorded in the history as the arrival of the "Urban Millennium" or the 'tipping point'. In regard to future trends, it is estimated 93% of urban growth will occur in developing nations, with 80% of urban growth occurring in Asia and Africa. Urged by these observations, city halls and political decision makers have become very alert, calling for urgent solutions to the growing problems. However, the recent advances in information and communication technologies may stimulate new solutions towards the urbanization problems. This is verified as a target research and innovation area in Horizon 2020 of European Union Policy under the challenge 'Secure Clean and Efficient Energy' with the main goal of jointly Smart Sustainable Cities. The aim is to integrate and validate ICT technologies and services in neighbourhoods to make progress towards intelligent cities by exploiting ubiquitous technologies. In addition to technical developments, attention is given to innovative service business models which include security, safety and privacy issues. Our need to improve our understanding of cities, however, is pressed not only by the social relevance of urban environments, but also by the availability of new strategies for city-scale interventions that are enabled by emerging technologies. Leveraging advances in data analysis, sensor technologies, and urban experiments, City Science will provide new insights into creating a data-driven approach to urban design and planning. To build the cities that the world needs, we need a scientific understanding of cities that considers our built environments and the people who inhabit them. This call addresses all the aforementioned issues by incorporating new technologies in the area of mobile communications, multimedia services, data storage and handling and ubiquitous computing. Despite the interest raised by this decade-old research topic, the development of WSN software is still carried out in a rather primitive fashion, by building software directly atop the operating system and by relying on an individual’s hard-earned programming skills. WSN developers must face not only the functional application requirements but also a number of challenging, non-functional requirements and constraints resulting from scarce resources. The heterogeneity of network nodes, the unpredictable environmental influences, and the large size of the network further add to the difficulties. In the WSN community, there is a growing awareness of the need for methodologies, techniques, and abstractions that simplify development tasks and increase the confidence in the correctness and performance of the resulting software. Software engineering (SE) support is therefore sought, not only to ease the development task but also to make it more reliable, dependable, and repeatable. Nevertheless, this topic has received so far very little attention by the SE community. SESENA13 aims to attract researchers belonging to both the SE and WSN communities, not only to exchange recent research results on the topic, but also to stimulate discussion about the core open problems and to define a shared research agenda. The workshop welcomes both research contributions and position statements. The former will foster in-depth technical discussions of novel results with an audience composed of both SE and WSN researchers. The latter will provide the opportunity for presenting open problems, provocative views, or previously unexplored ideas in an informal fashion. To foster discussion, SESENA13 will also host a special “speakers’ corner” session composed of impromptu presentations where attendees (including those without accepted papers) will have the opportunity to present their own views in very short segments (e.g., 2-4 minutes). * Topics of Interest * The workshop focuses on software engineering issues arising in networked (embedded) sensing systems and their possible integration in Internet of Things scenarios. Opportunistic networks are an instance of the delay tolerant paradigm applied to networks made up of users' portable devices (such as smartphones and tablets). As such, they are able to cope with challenged network conditions that are often present in real life, such as high node mobility, variable connectivity, and disconnections, which would impair communications in traditional Mobile Ad Hoc Networks. In this scenario, user mobility becomes one of the main drivers to enable message delivery. In fact, according to the store-carry-and-forward paradigm, user devices store messages and carry them around while they move in the network, exchanging them upon encounter with other nodes, and eventually delivering them to the ir destination or to interested users. This new communication paradigm enables legacy applications in challenged scenarios, as well as it paves the way to innovative solutions. While opportunistic networks initially received attention to support communication where an infrastructure is not available (for disaster recovery or in rural areas), nowadays a number of applications can be envisaged ranging from content sharing, through mobile social networking, to participatory and urban sensing. All these applications rely on data forwarding amongst devices. As a consequence, two aspects become relevant, that is, the need for mechanisms guaranteeing trusted and secure communications while preserving users' privacy (in the absence of infrastructure and sometimes even end-to-end connectivity), and incentive mechanisms able to boost the participation in the network. This Special Issue of Computer Communications seeks contributions pushing the state of the art in Opportunistic Networking. Opportunistic communication paradigm heavily benefits from the heterogeneous networking and communication infrastructure that currently exist, e.g., mobile networks, P2P networks, with the supporting technologies in data management and system interoperability. The SI aims at presenting state-of-the-art research and future trends in mobile and heterogeneous opportunistic networking and application paradigms, combining the mobile communication, mobility and resource management field, and scientifically presents the various concepts that contribute to enable high performance computing in these environments. The Demo session will be co-located with the Poster session to ensure maximum visibility and a close interaction between presenters and participants. WIVEC2013 seeks demo proposals covering innovative technologies, platforms, analysis and testing tools as well as applications related to wireless vehicular communications. Submissions describing mature systems, proof-of-concept platforms and prototypes - developed for commercial use or for research purposes, from industries or universities - are encouraged. Demonstrations will be selected based on their novelty, technical quality, and attractiveness of the demonstrated system. Accepted demonstrations will be published on the WIVEC website including a full description and professional pictures. Please note that for every accepted demonstration, at least one person must register for the conference and present the demo. However, no additional paper charge is needed for authors that are already presenting a regular paper in WIVEC2013.
