SCOPE AND OVERVIEW
--------------------------------
The development of smart vehicles and more sustainable transportation
systems has emerged as one of the most fundamental societal challenges
of the next decade. At the same time, automotive manufacturers are
striving to make vehicles safer and more environmentally friendly to
fulfil consumers’ expectations and new regulations. To revolutionise our
mobile lifestyle towards a more sustainable and connected future it is
of paramount importance to develop innovative cooperative systems
enabling road users and other actors to exchange information in real
time and in an autonomous manner, pervasive sensing to monitor the
status of vehicles and the surroundings, big data analytics for the
processing of sheer amount of data coming from the transportation
infrastructure, middleware platforms for information management and
sharing, and appropriate interaction interfaces between drivers and
vehicles. Clearly, the seamless integration between mobile devices,
vehicular communication netw!
orks, and information and transportation systems will face a number of
technical, economical and regulatory challenges.
Authors are encouraged to submit full papers presenting recent
developments, current research challenges and future directions in the
use of networking, communications, data management, and applications to
realise vehicular mobility systems that are more connected, sustainable
and safe.
Topics of interest for SmartVehicles 2014 include, but are not limited to:
+ Vehicular Network as a Sensor Network;
+ V2V, V2I and V2X communications
+ Vehicular mobility support in next-generation wireless technologies
+ Communications protocol design (MAC, routing, data dissemination)
+ Data storage, management, and retrieval in vehicular networks
+ Solutions to connect vehicles with the Internet
+ Big data analytics for ITS applications
+ Security and privacy in ITS applications
+ Multimedia applications, infotainment
+ Cooperative driving, autonomous and smart vehicles
+ Traffic management and efficiency applications
+ Electrification of transportation systems
+ Simulation environments, experimental testbeds, field operational tests
+ Mobile (smart) device integration in vehicles and transport systems
+ Integration of cloud technologies in ITS applications

Special Issue on Green Communications
Elsevier Computer Networks
-----------------------------------------------
* Deadline: February 28, 2014 *
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/computer-networks/call-for-papers/special-…
One of the most urgent challenges of the 21st century is to investigate
new technologies that can enable a transition towards a more sustainable
society with a reduced carbon footprint. It is well understood that ICT
is one of the keys to a future low-carbon and sustainable society.
Communications technologies will be critical to achieving large-scale
energy savings in all domains including communications, manufacturing,
transportation, buildings, and electricity generation and distribution.
In this context, there is a critical need for new ways of reducing
energy consumption of communication systems if the current trajectory of
traffic growth and supporting anywhere/anytime/anything access is to
continue unabated. Energy costs are significant in a broad range of
communications networks ranging from data center networks (where network
equipment consume about 15% of the overall energy used) to cellular
networks (where energy use of base stations amounts to around 70% of the t!
otal). The need for ‘greener’ communications technologies has been
recognized by the research community as demonstrated by the significant
research efforts in this area during the last years. However, many
challenges still remain to be addressed.
The special issue of Computer Networks on Green Communications will
focus on recent research results in the area of green communications. We
seek papers describing research results that show significant energy
savings in communications systems. We also seek survey and tutorial
papers in green communications. Topics of interest include (but are not
limited to):
- Energy-efficient home, access, core, and data center networks
- Energy-efficient wireless access, home and sensor networks
- Energy-efficient cellular networks
- Energy-efficient content distribution
- Power-aware algorithms, protocols, network equipment, and applications
- Software-defined networks for energy efficiency
- Energy Management as a part of Network Management
- Performance models and metrics for analyzing performance-energy trade-offs
- Trade-offs in embodied versus use phase energy consumption
- Trade-offs in thin client, cloud computing, and network energy use
- Regulation and standardisation

Special Issue on Networking and Communications for Smart Cities
-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Smart Cities are technology-intensive cities in which the importance and
role of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) is expanding.
ICT plays a key role toward the sustainable development of new urban
environments. Buildings with smart sensors and control systems can
measure their environment and control it in real time (e.g. HVAC). Smart
metering allows a utility company to match its production to the demand,
dynamically. An electricity provider can influence both production and
demand through the use of smart grid technology.
This special issue revolves on the following foundational question: what
are the “unique” context characteristics, application and control needs,
and traffic/user patterns in existing (and futuristic) smart city
scenarios, which require a rethinking of networking and communication
technologies and systems, as well as their relevant modeling and
dimensioning methodologies?
----------------------------------------------
SCOPE
----------------------------------------------
The scope of this special issue is on purpose kept broad in terms of
networking and communication technologies. Rather, perspective
contributions are expected to sharply target aspects and requirements
which clearly distinguish smart cities from general purpose networking
and communication systems. We aim at assembling high quality papers
which show how smart cities and sensor-generated traffic uniquely
challenge current access and transport technologies and protocols, and
bring about compelling solutions to such emerging issues, new modeling
insights, new monitoring and control means, and so on. We especially
welcome work devised to:
• explore how existing technologies and protocols need to be
revisited/adapted to fit the urban cities requirements, or, conversely,
highlight latest technology shifts or propose new context-specific
solutions;
• provide experimentally supported models and feedbacks from urban-scale
pilot and production deployments;
• address emerging new applications and/or new challenges.
----------------------------------------------
TOPICS OF INTEREST
----------------------------------------------
• Machine to Machine services/patterns and their communication and
networking support
• Quality of Service, fairness provisioning and Service Level
Agreementsfor dense deployments;
• Multi-client large-scale networks (fairness, cohabitation)
• Privacy for smart-metering (anonymity, presence detection, tracking)
• Co-located Networks and inter-technology interference;
• Multi-technology networks and inter-operability for the smart grid
(e.g. PLC, IEEE 802.15.4, wirelessHART);

SPECIAL SESSION: MOBILE MULTIMEDIA SENSING
MARCH 19-21, 2014, SINGAPORE.
The ACM Multimedia Systems conference provides a forum for
researchers, engineers, and scientist to present and share
their latest research findings in multimedia systems. While
research about specific aspects of multimedia systems is
regularly published in the various proceedings and
transactions of the networking, operating system, real-time
system, and database communities, MMSys aims to cut across
these domains in the context of multimedia data types. This
provides a unique opportunity to view the intersections and
interplay of the various approaches and solutions developed
across these domains to deal with multimedia data types.
Furthermore, MMSys provides an avenue for communicating
research that addresses multimedia systems holistically.
The special session on mobile media sensing is an
opportunity to foster dialogs and interactions between the
MMSYS community and other research communities, in
particular, researchers whose work lies in the intersection
of media, mobile computing and sensing. Topics of interest
include, but are not limited to:
- Experience with mobile media applications, networks
and systems
- Innovative multimedia and mobile sensing applications
- Novel models for combining multimedia and sensing
- Wearable computing and innovative mobile devices
- Software architectures for multimedia processing
and mobile devices
- System-level energy management for mobile devices
