International Journal of Distributed Sensor Networks
Special Issue on
Algorithm and Theory for Robust Wireless Sensor Networks
http://www.hindawi.com/journals/ijdsn/osi/
Wireless sensor networks raise a number of interesting and undiscovered
algorithmic issues, but traditional techniques are not sufficient to solve
these problems in the right way. This is specifically due to constrained
energy and computation capability, nondeterministic sensor failures,
channel
impairments, node mobility, hostile and distrusted environments, and even
external attackers. In all these respects, wireless sensor networks exhibit
substantial vulnerability when compared to other networks. It is
challenging
to design a robust wireless sensor network by devising novel algorithms or
developing new theories whilst introducing minimal communication overhead
and energy consumption. For example, sensor nodes are often deployed in
outdoor or hazardous environments. Power outage of sensors can lead to node
failure and cause many serious problems. Recently, an aggressive approach
has been developed that wirelessly re-charges the sensor nodes to increase
the robustness of the sensor networks. The charging tasks can be performed
by single or multiple mobile machines. However, the algorithmic and
theoretical issues in the wireless charging problem for WSNs were not fully
explored.
The main focus of this special issue is devoted to deeper understanding of
the algorithms and theories which are developed to build up a robust
wireless sensor network. Moreover, it is to push the theoretical and
practical research forward for a deeper understanding in the fundamental
algorithm, modeling, and analysis techniques of robust wireless sensor
networks. Potential topics include, but are not limited to:
• Algorithms and theories for wireless sensor networks related to
robustness
issues
• Performance analysis of reliable protocols for wireless sensor networks
• Robust routing algorithms in wireless sensor networks
• Robust topology control techniques in wireless sensor networks
• Robust coverage algorithms in wireless sensor networks
• Robust MAC protocols in wireless sensor networks
• Robust position estimation in wireless sensor networks
• Duplicate data and resource optimization in mobile wireless networks
• Wireless recharging strategies in mobile wireless sensor networks
• Fault-tolerant clustering and cooperative strategies in wireless sensor
networks
• Robust boundary detection algorithms in wireless sensor networks

Special Issue on "Current and Future Architectures, Protocols, and
Services for the Internet of Things" with Elsevier Computer
Communications
Scope
The Internet of Things (IoT) started as a research topic more than a
decade ago and evolved towards partial deployment in the last few
years. It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices
into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet
architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources
making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical.
On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which
complicates the extension of the status quo.
The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related
compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects.
First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will
be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions
may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and
to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed.
Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to
well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques
are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new
network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a
sustainable future IoT.
In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the
field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a
special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute
to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving
open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and
comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing
integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4)
Enabling new services.
Topics of interest include but are not limited to:
- Wireless, wired, and hybrid networks
- IETF proposals such as RPL and 6LoWPAN
- Privacy and security
- Interconnection between IP and sensor networks
- Integration of future Internet paradigms such as ICN
- Machine to Machine communications in IoT scenarios
- Energy efficiency in smart object scenarios
- IoT management and interoperability
- Participatory and global sensing
- Performance measurement and tuning, scalability
- Simulation and analytical studies
- Testbed, prototype, and practical systems
Schedule
Submission deadline: September 15, 2013
Author notification: January 31, 2014
Revised paper due: March 15, 2014
Final author notification: April 15, 2014

Call for Papers: The Fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor Networks
==========================================================================
19-20 September 2013
Como Lake (Italy)
http://realwsn.deib.polimi.it
Follow REALWSN on Twitter: @RealWSN!
We are excited to announce that the fifth Workshop on Real-World
Wireless Sensor will be held at the Como Lake, Italy in September 2013.
The purpose of the fifth Workshop on Real-World Wireless Sensor
Networks (REALWSN) is to bring together researchers and practitioners
working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world
experiments or deployments. Included are, nontheless, new forms
of sensing such as those that leverage smart phones, Internet of
Things, RFIDs, and robots.
When working with real-world experiments or deployments, many new
issues arise: the network environment may be composed of a variety of
different technologies, leading to very heterogeneous network
structures; software development for large scale networks poses new
types of problems; prototype networks may differ significantly from
the deployed system; actual sensor network deployments may need a
complex combination of autonomous and manual
configuration. Furthermore, results obtained through simulation are
typically not directly applicable to operational networks and it is
therefore imperative for the community to produce results from
experimental research.
