Call for Papers: ACM e-Energy 2014 Cambridge, UK, June 11-13 2014 Computing and communication technologies impact energy systems in two distinct ways. The exponential growth in deployment of these technologies has made them large-scale energy consumers. Therefore, new architectures, technologies and systems are being developed and deployed to make computing and networked system more energy efficient. Additionally, and perhaps more importantly, these technologies are at the center of the on-going revolution in next-generation "smart" and sustainable energy systems. They measure, monitor and control energy systems such as the smart grid; inform and shape human demand; aid in the prediction, deployment, storage and control of energy resources; and determine how utilities, generators, regulators, and consumers measure, analyze, and collectively control system elements. The fifth International Conference on Future Energy Systems (ACM e-Energy), to be held in Cambridge UK in June 2014, aims to be the premier venue for researchers working in the broad areas of computing and communication for smart energy systems (including the smart grid), and in energy-efficient computing and communication systems. By bringing together researchers in a high-quality single-track conference with significant opportunities for individual and small-group interaction, it will serve as a major forum for presentations and discussions that will shape the future of this area. We solicit high-quality papers in the area of computing and communication for the Smart Grid and energy-efficient computing and communications. We welcome submissions describing theoretical advances as well as system design, implementation and experimentation. ACM e-Energy is committed to a fair, timely, and thorough review process providing authors of submitted papers with sound and detailed feedback. Relevant topics for the conference include, but are not limited to the following: . Advances in monitoring and control of smart homes and buildings . Sensing, monitoring, control, and management of energy systems . Energy-efficient computing and communication, including energy- efficient data centers . The impact of storage integration on the smart grid . Electric Vehicle monitoring and control . Distribution and transmission network control techniques . Microgrid and distributed generation management and control . Modeling, control, and architectures for renewable energy generation resources . Smart grid communication architectures and protocols . Privacy and security of smart grid infrastructure . Innovative pricing and incentives for demand-side management . Novel technologies to enhance reliability and robustness of energy systems . HCI for energy monitoring, management, and awareness . User studies and behavioral change enabled by computing and communication technologies . Data analytics for the smart grid and energy-efficient systems . Modeling, management and control of variability and uncertainty in energy supply and demand Two type of contributions are solicited: . Full papers, up to 12 pages in ACM double-column format, should present original theoretical and/or experimental research in any of the areas listed above that has not been previously published, accepted for publication, or is not currently under review by another conference or journal. . Poster/demo descriptions, up to 2 pages in ACM double-column format showcasing works-in-progress; accepted posters/demos will be presented at the conference. This is becoming necessary in order to transition to a more sustainable energy generation and consumption and reduce its adverse effects on the environment. While more advances in areas like renewable energies and network control are necessary, advances in communication technologies, data fusion and mining, as well as scheduling and optimization are also critical in order to achieve this vision. It is anticipated that the same communication technologies that have revolutionized our way of life in the past decades, ranging from sensor networks, mobile Internet, cloud computing, smart phones and many others, will have direct applicability to Smart Grid. Many off-the-shelf and commercial communication technologies may be ready for deployment in the Smart Grid today. Examples include the use of wireless communications to collect and exchange information about electric quality, consumption, pricing, etc. However, allowing greater flexibility in sharing information in a secure and reliable fashion still poses a number of challenges. Furthermore, using off-the-shelves technologies may lead to inefficiencies, especially if energy management specific features are not utilized adequately in the data compression and the collection infrastructure. Questions that remain unanswered in the smart grid context, include, coverage, interference, spectrum sharing, architecture, network! topology, access control and authentication, data representation, data fusion and many more. This series of IEEE JSAC is focused on identifying the numerous communication challenges posed by the various aspects and functionalities of the Smart Grid and exploring research avenues for addressing them. Original contributions that are unpublished and not currently under review by any other journal are solicited in relevant areas of Smart Grid communications including (but not limited) to the following: • Physical and MAC layer protocols for Smart Grid applications • Spectrum sharing, coexistence and interference mitigation in Smart Grid communications • Network control for the power grid • Smart Grid sensors data fusion and mining models • Communications to support demand-response, load and pricing management • Smart Grid cyber-physical network modeling and performance analysis • Measurement data from Smart Grid testbeds and field trials • Architecture and network topology for Smart Grid applications • Cyber and physical vulnerabilities and Smart Grid security Each submission should demonstrate clear applicability to Smart Grid communications. Call for Papers Special Issue on "Current and Future Architectures, Protocols, and Services for the Internet of Things" will be published in Elsevier Computer Communications Scope The Internet of Things (IoT) started as a research topic more than a decade ago and evolved towards partial deployment in the last few years. It describes the integration of magnitudes of smart devices into the current Internet. Those devices challenge Internet architectures and protocols. They may exhibit very limited resources making the direct application of common approaches nearly impractical. On the other hand, they significantly increase heterogeneity, which complicates the extension of the status quo. The Internet of Things has continuously been discussed. Related compilations of contributions usually miss two important aspects. First, the analysis of IoT approaches that have been deployed or will be available soon in the current Internet. Analyzing those solutions may help to understand relevant aspects of a successful deployment and to identify common pitfalls while IoT approaches have been designed. Second, deployed protocols need a careful revisit. In contrast to well-established Internet protocols and architectures, IoT techniques are fresh and not fully developed on the same level. In addition, new network paradigms emerge, which need to be considered for a sustainable future IoT. In this special issue we are seeking new and unpublished papers in the field of architectures, protocols, and services for the IoT with a special focus on current and future deployment. They should contribute to at least one of the following aspects. (1) Identifying and solving open technical problems. (2) Performing thorough evaluation and comparison of existing proposals or standards. (3) Addressing integrative aspects towards a full-fledged IoT deployment. (4) Enabling new services.
