IEEE Internet of Things Journal, Special Issue on Cloud Computing for IoT
Submission Deadline: December 1st 2014
CALL FOR PAPERS
====================================================
Over recent past years there has been a growing interest in the ability
of embedded devices, sensors, actuators to communicate and create a
ubiquitous cyber-physical world. The growth of the notion of the
Internet of Things (IoT) and the rapid development of technologies such
as short range mobile communication and improved energy-efficiency is
expected to create a pervasive connection of “things”. This will
inevitably result in the generation of enormous amount of data, which
have to be stored, processed and accessed. Cloud computing has long been
recognized as a paradigm for big data storage and analytics. The
combination of cloud computing and IoT can enable ubiquitous sensing
services and powerful processing of sensing data streams beyond the
capability of individual “things”, thus stimulating innovations in both
fields. For example, cloud platforms allow the sensing data to be stored
and used intelligently for smart monitoring and actuation with the smart
devices. Novel data fusion algorithms, machine learning methods, and
artificial intelligence techniques can be implemented and run
centralized or distributed on the cloud to achieve automated decision
making. These will boost the development of new applications such as
smart cities, grids, and transportation systems. New challenges however
arise when IoT meets cloud – there is an urgent need for novel network
architectures that seamlessly integrate them, and protocols that
facilitate big data streaming from IoT to the cloud. QoS and QoE, as
well as data security, privacy, and reliability, are critical concerns
during the integration.
This special issue solicits high-quality original research papers which
focuses on the integration of cloud computing and IoT. We encourage
submissions on theoretical, practical, as well as experimental studies,
from both academia and industry, related to all aspects of Cloud
Computing for IoT. High-quality survey papers that review the cutting
edge research in this field would also be considered. Topics of
interests include (but are not limited to) the following categories:
- Network architecture for cloud and IoT integration
- IoT and cloud data management
- Cloud computing for large-scale sensor data stream processing
- Cloud-assisted machine to machine communication
- Innovative applications of cloud-based sensing architecture, e.g.,
smart cities, smart grids, transportation
- Protocol design and modification for cloud and IoT integration (e.g.,
CoAP, IPv6)
- Data security, privacy and reliability for cloud and IoT integration
- Cloud-assisted IoT mobility management and QoE/QoS enhancement
- Cloud-assisted ubiquitous sensing services and applications

ACM Transactions on Intelligent Systems and Technology
Special Issue on Crowd in Intelligent Systems
= AIMS AND SCOPE =
Crowdsourcing, i.e., outsourcing tasks to an indefinite crowd, has now
become a common strategy to resolve problems that are difficult to
computers. It has proven the intelligence, wisdom, or judgments from
the crowd, when appropriately combined, can be effective in addressing
challenges in various areas, from knowledge organization (such as
Wikipedia), business investment, policy making, government transparency
to scientific development. In particular, the contributions from the
crowd are stretching out the horizon of intelligent systems by filling
the gap between artificial intelligence and human intelligence with the
wisdom of crowd. Successful applications can readily been seen in the
fields of computer-human interaction, computer vision, information
retrieval, social computing, biomedical research (such as Foldit), and
information and multimedia systems.
The uses in crowdsourcing have opened up many new forms of intelligent
systems and technologies most of which have barely been explored to
date. However, challenging research questions still lie in the way to
unleash the potentials of the crowd as a part of intelligent systems.
This special issue aims to address these challenges in the hope of
overcoming the obstacles blocking the road toward intelligent systems
where artificial- and human-intelligence perfectly harmonize.
The dimensions listed below indicate the range of work that is relevant
to the special issue. Each article is expected to make a significant
scientific contribution along one or more of these dimensions. In case
of doubt about the relevance of your topic, please contact the special
issue guest editors.
= TOPIC DIMENSIONS =
- General: Theoretical, experimental, and/or methodological developments
advancing state-of-the-art knowledge of crowdsourcing for intelligent
systems
- Novel applications: Novel uses of contributions from the crowd for
intelligent systems (e.g., complicated tasks rather than simple judgment
or labeling tasks)
- Evaluation: Evaluation of the design and quality of intelligent
systems by the crowd
- Machine learning: Effective learning and information aggregation from
noisy crowd inputs; quality assurance and cheat detection for the crowd
contributions
- Human factors: Effective interfaces and workflow for the task workers,
especially for complicated, compound tasks
- Infrastructure: Programming languages, tools and platforms providing
enhanced support for crowdsourcing; security, privacy, trust, and
reputation management in crowdsourcing for intelligent systems
- Economics and incentives: Enable effective and efficient crowd
contributions that traditionally would only be possible by expensive
domain experts
- Ethics: Theory, design, or mechanisms that address ethical issues in
adopting crowd’s efforts in intelligent systems. Possible ethical
issues include education, labor exploitation, crowd awareness (of the
tasks they perform), and alienation.
- Inherent biases, limitations and trade-offs of combining crowd
intelligence and artificial intelligence
= SCHEDULE =

Call for Papers
The 14th IFIP Annual Mediterranean Ad Hoc Networking Workshop
http://medhocnet2015.uc.pt/June 17-19, 2015
Vilamoura, Algarve, Portugal
OVERVIEW
The unstoppable evolution of network technologies is paving the way to
new network and users scenarios, driving creative services and building
new business models. Wide and easy connectivity, network
programmability, fast speed connections and decoupled data and
management repositories, as well as smart devices are all of them
facilitating innovation in the networking and services arena.
MED-HOC-NET 2015 focuses on fundamental network concepts, but also on
topics related to those network paradigms attracting large attention by
the scientific and industrial communities. Hence, the conference
includes topics such as smart cities, smart transportation, IoT,
data-centric operations, autonomous organization, seamless connectivity
and cross-layer design and application scenarios (road safety, disaster
recovery, smart cities, energy efficient buildings, sensors, actuators,
wearables, etc.). Moreover, novel and exciting challenges are
introduced by commercial systems adopting the ad hoc paradigm, from
mesh, sensor and vehicular networks, and by associated delay-tolerant
and opportunistic scenarios. Furthermore, today's market explosion of

CALL FOR PAPERS
First IEEE Workshop on Pervasive Energy Services (PerEnergy)
in conjunction with IEEE PerCom 2015
Submission Deadline: November 26, 2014
March 23, 2015, St. Louis, Missouri, USA
http://perenergy2015.cs.uni-bonn.de/
======================================================================
Scope of the Workshop
---------------------
A wealth of unexplored knowledge exists in the power data collected
from smart meters and smart plugs (i.e., metering equipment for
individual wall outlets). Analysis of the data may be used to provide
context-based services (e.g., presence detection), but also serve as
the foundation for novel services (e.g. automated recommendations for
energy savings). To date, the potential of this domain has barely been
explored, although more and more energy data is becoming available due
to the increasing number of deployed smart metering equipment. At the
moment, one of the most important research challenges in smart energy
systems is thus the creation of value-added services that exploit the
information content in energy generation and consumption data in such
a way that they can inspire new functionalities and context models.
The aim of this workshop is thus to bring together practitioners and
researchers from both academia and industry in order to have a forum
for discussion and technical presentations on the recent advances in
the numerous opportunities opened up by the use of energy data in
context-aware systems. It furthermore serves as a forum for the smart
energy research community to discuss open issues, novel solutions and
the future development of smart energy management systems in general.
Topics of Interest
------------------
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:
- Novel architectures for the integration of smart meter/smart plugs
into pervasive computing systems
- Seamless energy meter integration in the design and architecture of
smart home/office spaces
- Applications relying on energy data including, for instance,
energy optimization and sustainable operation of smart
cities, household load disaggregation, generation and load
forecasting, and other means for informed load shifting
- Novel business models relying on energy data
- Collection, processing, and integration of energy data to improve
the control over loads and generation (e.g., distributed renewable
sources)
- Security and privacy considerations in smart energy metering,
including novel means to mitigate privacy and security threats
- Experiences with experimental power metering system prototypes and
pilots
- Power metering testbeds and data sets for the comparison of
household characteristics and processing approaches in a globalized
world
- Industrial use cases showing gaps to be filled by future research
Submission Instructions
-----------------------
Authors are invited to submit regular (full) papers for presentation
at the workshop, describing original, previously unpublished work,
which is not currently under review by another workshop, conference,
or journal. Regular papers should present novel perspectives within
the general scope of the workshop.
Submissions of papers must be formatted according to the IEEE 8.5x11
conference format and must not exceed 6 pages. Papers in excess of page
limits shall not be considered for review or publication.
Accepted papers will appear in the IEEE PerCom '15 Workshops
proceedings published by IEEE Computer Society Press. The authors
of accepted papers must guarantee that their paper will be presented
at the workshop. Each accepted paper requires a full PERCOM
registration to appear in the proceedings (no registration is
available for workshops only).
Submissions are handled through the EDAS system. It is a requirement
that all authors listed in the submitted paper are also listed in
EDAS. The author section of EDAS will be locked after the workshop
submission deadline to ensure that conflicts of interest can be
properly enforced during review. If the list of authors differs
between the paper and EDAS, the paper may not be reviewed.
Further submission instructions can be found on the workshop web page:

The evolving information and communications (ICT) technologies present a unique
opportunity to effect the transformation needed to move us towards the goal of
sustainability by helping to reduce our carbon footprint, mitigate and adapt ill effects
of climate change, reduce and repair environmental damage, provide effective disaster
response and recovery, creatively manage overstressed infrastructures in crowded
urban systems, and enhance use of planet friendly materials and technologies. ICT
is already being integrated into many areas of our lives, such as smart management
of city services, transportation, energy distribution and management, health care, etc.,
and this integration is expected to expand deeper and wider in the coming years and
decades. Unfortunately, this ICT proliferation brings in its own challenges of increased
carbon footprint, accelerating obsolescence of electronic equipment and its disposal
issues, increased use of precious natural resources such as water and materials, etc.
These twin problems of reducing the environmental impact of ICT and exploiting ICT
for a more sustainable world form the underlying theme for SustainIT since its
inception in 2010.
This year's SustainIT continues this theme by focusing on inter-disciplinary scientific
challenges of enhancing the sustainability of ICT and via ICT. The goal of this
conference is to bring together people from different research areas, and provide a
forum to exchange ideas, discuss solutions, and share experiences among
researchers, professionals, and application developers from both industry and academia.

============================================================
SCOPE AND TOPICS OF INTEREST
---------------------------------------------------
Modern networked systems, in particular, networked physical
infrastructures, are inter-dependent in such a way that changing in one
network may have a profound impact on other systems. One notable example of
such interdependent networked system is the smart-grid, of which the power
stations depend on communication networks for control and management and
vice versa, the communication networks depend on the power systems for
their electricity supports. Furthermore, the rapid adoption and
pervasiveness of computing, and emergence of smart cyber-physical systems
and Internet of Things (IoT) have created new capabilities for autonomy,
interoperability, interaction and cooperation between many critical
computing, communication and control networks (“cyber systems”) and
physical infrastructures and “smart” environments (“physical systems”).
Unfortunately, the connections with cyberspace also open to new surfaces of
vulnerabilities and new threat vectors. The challenge is to understand the
interdependencies of these systems and how the dynamics are cascaded
between them so as to design and develop “smarter” and more resilient
inter-dependent networked (cyber-physical) systems.
The objective of this workshop is to advance and promote theoretical
foundations for understanding the behaviors of and inter-dependencies in
modern networked systems -- especially, in critical (networked) physical
infrastructure systems -- and emerging cyber-physical systems. It also
seeks to explore new system architectures and innovative mechanisms for the
design and development of robust and resilient interdependent networked
systems. This workshop will foster an interdisciplinary research community
that discovers new knowledge for the design and operation of national
critical networked infrastructures as processes and services.
LIST OF TOPICS
The Workshop on Inter-Dependent Networks (WIDN) welcomes contributions that
are mainly involved, but not limited to the following (non-exhaustive) list
of topics, relevant to its broader scope:
- Understand and design of interdependent critical infrastructures
- Vulnerability and resilience of interdependent networks
- Cascading failures in interdependent networks
- Multiplex and multi-layered networks
- Network representations
- Complexity and approximation of interdependent networks optimization
and control techniques
- Theoretical frameworks and multidisciplinary computational models of
interdependent networks

CALL FOR PAPERS
A Special Issue of
AD HOC NETWORKS (Elsevier) on
VEHICULAR NETWORKING FOR MOBILE CROWD SENSING
http://www.journals.elsevier.com/ad-hoc-networks/call-for-papers/special-is…
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
DEADLINE APPROACHING: November 15, 2014
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Scope:
Mobility of people and goods is vital to urban
economy and quality of life. It is estimated that
people will increase their need of mobility
around 35% per decade for the next 3 decades.
In this context, vehicular ad hoc networks
(VANETs) can be seen as new key enablers of the future networked society.
Vehicles travelling acquire, as mobile sensors, a
variety of information with increased capillarity
in time and space. The vast information collected
by vehicles can be used to enable a plurality of
new services addressing safety, traffic
management, smart navigation, in-vehicle remote
control, pollution measurements, urban
surveillance, environment monitoring, forensic
investigations, and Internet access. Hence,
VANETs represent a wide dynamic sensing opportunity.
The acquisition, sharing, processing, and
transmission of data from, to, and among vehicles
foresee a new way to manage the communications:
heterogeneity is inherent to devices, to data,
and also to technologies. This opens new
challenges whose complexity increases with the amount of connected vehicles.
A typical challenge is how to make vehicles
opportunistically cooperate, sharing resources
and contents, how to optimize the transmission
through operated networks or road side units
(i.e., vehicle to infrastructure -V2I -
communications), and how to obtain a real
advantage from vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V)
communications (such as, offloading of cellular
networks, resource optimization, creation of new services).
Other challenges derive from the jointly
management and seamless integration of
heterogeneous data flows, from frequent but small
packets transmitted in V2V links, to huge
multimedia flows shared and transmitted through the infrastructure.
This special issue is seeking original
contributions on VANETs, sharing the research
efforts and deployment challenges in this field
and discussing challenges, key enabling
techniques, unprecedented approaches, and field
trails. Topics of interests include (but are not limited to):
-Enabling technologies for vehicles cooperation
(IEEE 802.11p, LTE, Visible Light Communication, etc.)
-Cooperative approach for V2I communication
-Physical (PHY) and medium access control (MAC)
techniques (OFDMA, CSMA, non orthogonal
waveforms) for V2V and V2I communications
-Design of advanced PHYs for the coexistence of
heterogeneous data flows (high rate flows with several low rate flows)
-Multi-modal heterogeneous networks and optimal management of resources
-Distributed algorithms for data collection
-Optimal retrieval of relevant data and optimal routing toward the
finalusers
-New ideas toward an efficient handling of huge
number of devices with widely varying
requirements (e.g., information-centric networking)
-Example of ITS or Smart Cities applications
relying on data collected by vehicles
-Field trial experiments.
Original, high quality contributions that are not
yet published or that are not currently under
review by other journals or peer-reviewed
conferences are sought. Authors should submit a
PDF version of their complete manuscript according to the
followingtimetable.

Internet of Things
In conjunction with:
VTC-2015 Spring,
11-14 May 2015,
Glascow, Scotland
*Website: *
http://mesh-wise.eu/VTC15HNIoT/
*Scope**:*
The proliferation of new services in the mobile market is driving the QoS
requirements ever higher (in terms of performance indicators spanning
throughput, delays, network coverage etc.). Meanwhile, a multitude of
battery-hungry mobile devices are either connected to the Internet or are
about to be. Following this trend, physical objects along with services are
gaining a central role, shaping the Internet of Things. At larger scales,
buildings and whole cities are also becoming smarter, embracing a wide
range of technologies to enhance and improve the quality of everyday
living, contributing at the same time to the global target of reducing
energy consumption.
Involved technologies within the IoT span from WSAN (Wireless Sensor and
Actuator Networks), and M2M communication, to security frameworks and
service models, while next generation wireless access networks will be
composed of flexible, multi-tier, and scalable heterogeneous architectures,
incorporating small cells, offloading techniques, and optimized protocols
for cellular IoT. Thus, an important challenge in future wireless
communications is how to design and run cost efficient networks to optimize
the key performance indicators supporting the requirements of these

E2IoT 2015 Call For Papers
========================
This workshop aims at gathering researchers and developers from the
fields of Internet of Things, Pervasive, Ubiquitous Computing and Green
ICT to discuss the possibilities of new applications and services which
decrease the carbon footprint of IoT, and which exploit IoT to reduce
the carbon footprint of our society.
The evolution of ICT has led to the diffusion of wireless personal
devices, such as smart mobile phones, personal computers and wearable
devices, designed to operate over the Internet. This, together with the
exponential growth of the number of interconnected devices is leading
towards the commonly called Internet of Things (IoT).
Presently, a large share of the total energy consumption of the
Internet takes place at the edge. This share is increasing with the
progressive deployment of the IoT, which is reshaping the edge of the
network, and which in the near future is bound to generate the large
majority of traffic on the Internet.
Though usually small and not power hungry, the sheer number of the
devices composing the IoT will make them the highest contributors to
total energy consumption in the ICT sector.
For meeting the challenge of a greener Internet, therefore, a greener
IoT is fundamental. This involves elaboration of new approaches at the
device level (energy efficient, energy proportional devices) as well as
at the system level (algorithms for energy efficient network services as
well as application layers services provisioning).
On the other side, the pervasiveness of sensing and computing
capabilities in IoT is enabling a wealth of new applications for energy
efficient management in almost all domains of human activity, from
transportation to lighting, from waste management to the smart grid.
