This major development will lead to major changes in usage and to a transformation of the technological ecosystem in all its complexity. IoT will allow people and objects in the physical world as well as data and virtual environments to interact with each other so as to create smart environments such as smart transport systems, smart cities, smart health, smart energy, etc., as part of a prosperous digital society. IoT is likely to improve the quality of people’s lives, create new markets and new jobs, increase economic growth and be an impetus for competition. However, IoT raises important questions and introduces new challenges for the security of systems and processes and the privacy of individuals. Some IoT applications are tightly linked to sensitive infrastructures and strategic services such as the distribution of water and electricity and the surveillance of assets. Other applications handle sensitive information about people, such as their location and movements, or their health and purchasing preferences. Confidence in and acceptance of IoT will depend on the protection it provides to people’s privacy and the levels of security it guarantees to systems and processes. IoT will enable objects to become active participants: these objects will be able to recognize events and changes in their environment and to sense and react autonomously without human intervention. Introducing objects into the control processes makes IoT security very difficult to address. Indeed, the Internet of Things is a complex system in which people interact with the technological ecosystem based on smart objects through complex processes. The interactions of these four IoT components: persons, intelligent objects, technological ecosystem, and processes highlight a systemic and cognitive dimension to the security of IoT. The interaction of people with the technological ecosystem requires the protection of their privacy. Similarly, their interaction with control processes requires to guaranteeing their safety. Processes must ensure their reliability and realize the objectives for which they are designed. The move towards a greater autonomy for objects will bring the security of technologies and processes and the privacy of individuals into sharper focus. Furthermore, in parallel with the increasing autonomy of objects to perceive and act on the environment, IoT security should move towards a greater autonomy in perceiving threats and reacting to attacks. This special issue aims to bring together state-of-the-art contributions on Internet of Things Security and Privacy: design methods of secure IoT applications and architectures, security attacks detection, prevention and counter measures. Original, unpublished contributions are solicited in all aspects of this discipline. This importance is expected to continue to grow in future decades. More and more business, healthcare or government organizations will become increasingly dependent on the communication between their departments, offices and people. In addition, the dynamics and mobility within these circles is growing significantly, due to changing business relations, social or environmental phenomena. Not only does society depend on these services in terms of availability but also in terms of proper functioning in all circumstances: services having stringent requirements with respect to protection of privacy, security, anonymity (such as e-health) cannot accept, for example, temporary leakage of confidential information by accident whether a result of human error or technical problems. The information and communication network technology itself has also been evolving with high velocity. End-user’s connection speed grows by 50 % per year (Nielsen’s Law); users have more and more different types of mobile devices which interconnect them to the Internet (tablets, smartphones, smart watches, etc.). These themselves provide incentives to generate novel technology paradigms which enable more flexible provisioning, network (function) virtualization, or improved power efficiency. The robustness and fault tolerance of these novel evolutions is as crucial as ever. This special issue aims to collect publications with cutting-edge insights, analysis, designs and/or evaluations in the field of the reliability and availability of communication networks and services. Next generation 5G networks are expected to be deployed by 2020, with design targets focusing on increased peak data rates, network capacity, and smart connectivity. This year WLN will focus on the characteristics of 5G networks, their technical design challenges, and the services they are expected to provide to wireless local networks and the future Internet. - Specific topics include, but are not limited to: - 5G - The quest for spectral efficiency - 5G infrastructure and design challenges - Virtualized and cloud-based radio access infrastructure - Wireless access schemes and techniques - Mobility and network management - Cognitive and reconfigurable radio - Small cell and ultra-dense deployment techniques - New services for the future Internet - The transition to 5G - Backward compatibility issues, and multi-RAT coexistence - Backhauling future heterogeneous and moving networks - 5G and the explosive growth of data traffic - Wireless and Mobile Clouds - Implementation and test bed issues Submission Guidelines ------------------------------- We seek original contributions that have neither been previously published nor currently under review. Authors are invited to submit a full paper (up to 8 pages) that describes complete work in a self-contained manner with the intent to deliver an oral presentation. For example, wireless hotspots are so widely deployed that access to the Internet is almost ubiquitous; people can work and play via Internet access no matter whether they are sitting on a terrace, travelling on a train, or flying in a plane. The explosive growth of applications for the current and emerging user services poses a number of challenges to this critical infrastructure. It also presents opportunities for research and innovation to both the academia and industry, especially for the development of efficiency, scalability and reliability in mobile and wireless networks. These challenges motivate us to design and develop new protocols, architectures and services for future mobile and wireless networks. The goal of this special issue is to publish both state-of-the-art and prospective papers that present advances towards the performance enhancement of mobile and wireless networks. In this context, papers will discuss all aspects that have an impact on the performance as depicted in research activities from professionals, academics and researchers. This special issue will be partially composed of the extended versions of the quality papers presented at the Special Session on Recent Issues in Mobile and Wireless Networks, the 2014 Global Wireless Summit (GWS 2014) at http://gws2014.org/. Two types of papers can be submitted: Regular Papers and Brief Announcements. Submissions for regular papers should be no longer than 15 pages (including the title, authors, abstract, figures, and references) in LNCS style; a submission may have an appendix of at most two pages beyond the 15 page limit. Brief announcements are restricted to two pages using the LNCS style, with no appendix. Submissions deviating from these guidelines will be rejected without consideration of their merits. If requested by the authors, a regular submission that is not selected for a regular presentation will also be considered for a brief announcement. This request must be clearly indicated in the first page of the paper. Such a request will not affect consideration of the paper for a regular paper. A paper submitted at this forum is expected to be original research not previously published. A submission may not be concurrently submitted to another conference, workshop, or journal.
