SPECIAL ISSUE ON
Advances on Vehicular Communication Systems
OVERVIEW
The joint efforts of academia and industry in the past years have led to
the introduction of new on board applications and services. In addition,
governments and standardization organizations have agreed upon a common
set of standards (DSRC) specific to vehicle-to-vehicle (V2V) and
vehicle-to-infrastructure (V2I) communications. Combined with the
cellular network infrastructure, they pave the way for a plethora of
solutions empowered by vehicular communications. Among these solutions
we have emergency alerts, autonomous vehicles, infotainment, comfort
services, cooperative road sensing and collaborative applications. Also,
the integration between smartphones and vehicles has been addressed by
many researchers, with a wide range of applications already available,
and many more being expected.
In terms of communication systems, mobility effects and channel
conditions heavily affect the signal quality, introducing path-loss,
fading, and received power fluctuations. Under such conditions, several
issues remain open including message dissemination in congested
environments, Quality of Service (QoS), efficient and adaptive routing,
MAC layer enhancements, mobility prediction, efficient handovers, etc.
This special issue is seeking for high quality contributions, soliciting
high level technical papers addressing the main research challenges in
the vehicular networking area. The possible contributions should consist
in original theoretical or practical analyses, never published
elsewhere, and validated by simulations or real testbeds.
TOPICS
Topics of interest include, but are not limited to, the following scope:
- Wireless vehicular networking
- Congestion and admission control in dense vehicular networks
- Content distribution in wireless vehicular environments
- Smartphone/vehicle integration
- Service oriented architectures, service portability, P2P
- Cooperative sensing of road conditions
- Network and system architectures for mobile vehicular computing
- DSRC/WAVE communications. Alternatives to DSRC.
- Network protocols and algorithms, including clustering, routing, etc.
- Cross-layer protocol design
- Statistical analysis, prediction and management of vehicular mobility
- Multimedia communications in vehicular scenarios
- Models, simulators and tools for vehicular environments

Call for Papers: IEEE Internet Computing Special Issue
- Building Internet of Things Software -
http://www.computer.org/portal/web/computingnow/iccfp2
====================================================================
As we equip people, places, and commodities with Internet-connected
embedded devices that can sense information about the environment and
subsequently take action, we will create the Internet of Things
(IoT). The IoT will improve society and quality of life, but making
this vision a reality requires interdisciplinary efforts in a range of
scientific domains. Specifically, enabling the design, implementation,
validation, and real-world use of IoT software requires that we
embrace diverse contributions in coherent and practical development
frameworks, possibly based on current and future standards.
This special issue seeks contributions about recent or ongoing
research efforts, experience reports, and success stories in enabling
an effective development of IoT software out of the individual
building blocks available in different communities. Topics of interest
include:
- design and modeling approaches and methodologies for IoT software;
- programming abstractions and languages expressly conceived for the IoT;
- development techniques for IoT software appropriate for different
hardware;
- platforms, from tiny sensors to the enterprise level;
- approaches for composing and interoperating existing IoT functionality;
- cross-layer IoT software architectures;
- standards for developing IoT software; and
- real-world deployments and experiences in building IoT systems.

SCOPE AND TOPICS
-----------------------------
The focus of this workshop is on two of the hottest technological trends
that will drive the evolution of the Internet: energy efficiency and
software-defined networks. If jointly applied to the design of
next-generation network devices and infrastructures, these concepts may
revolutionize the network, as we know today, by introducing extreme
flexibility, programmability, virtualization and customization of
network functionalities and their integration within the “Cloud.” On one
hand, energy efficiency will be the key for the needed scalability to
support “Big Data” and large-scale network infrastructures and
Data-Centers. On the other hand, energy-efficient approach can take
advantage of the network flexibility provided by Software-Defined
approaches.
The topics covered by the proposed workshop will include (but not
limited to):
- Evolution of Software Defined protocols and architectures;
- Network programmability and energy-efficiency;
- Traffic engineering for energy-efficient software defined networks;
- Design of green programmable network devices;
- Programmability for Network devices;

*CALL FOR PAPERS***
*Special Issue: Mobile Wearable Communications*
http://www.comsoc.org/files/Publications/Magazines/wci/cfp/cfpwcm0215.html**
Mobile wearable devices communications create new challenges compared to
ordinary sensor networks and short range communication. In mobile
wearable communications, wearable devices communicate with each other in
a Peer-to-Peer fashion or client-server fashion and also communicate
with aggregation points (e.g. smartphones, tablet devices and gateways
nodes). Wearable devices are expected to integrate multiple radio
technologies for multiple applications needs with small power
consumption and low transmission delays. These devices can hence
collect, interpret, transmit and exchange data among supporting
components, other wearable devices and the Internet. Data are not
limited to people’s personal biomedical data but they also include
human-centric social and context data. The success of mobile wearable
communications depends on communication and networking architectures
that support efficient and secure end-to-end information flows. Akey
design consideration of future wearable devices is to ubiquitously
connect to smart phones or Internet with very-low energy consumption.
Radio propagation and accordingly channel models may be vastly different
from those in existing wireless technologies.A huge number of connected
wearable devices require novel big data processing algorithms, efficient
storage solutions, cloud-assisted infrastructures, and
spectrum-efficient communications technologies. The aim of this Special
Issue is to present a collection of high-quality articles that report
the latest research advances on mobile wearable communications,
including various topics of interest, but not limited to:
* Wireless wearable communications architectures and systems
* Radio propagation, channel modeling, interference management and
physical layer techniques
* Sensor, actuator, M2M, relay, and NFC for wireless wearable
communications
* Mobile cloud architectures and services for wearable communications
and networking
* Big data processing in wearable networking
* Energy-efficiency, spectrum-efficiency, QoS, robustness, and
fault-tolerance
* Context-aware (e.g., social, location, time) design
* Security, trust, and privacy management
* Performance analysis, model, optimization, monitoring, and control
* Novel applications and services, e.g., wireless wearable
communications for eHealth, sport, fitness, transport safety,
location-based services, and crowd sensing
* Standardization and regulations for wireless wearable communications
and networking

CALL FOR PAPERS AND DEMOS
Extreme Conference on Communication and Computing - The Galápagos Expedition
ExtremeCom 2014
11-16 August, Galápagos Islands, Ecuador
<http://www.extremecom.org/> http://www.extremecom.org/
******************************************************************
Important dates
--------------- ----
Submission deadline: May 18, 2014 (deadline extended!)
Notification of acceptance: May 26, 2014
Early registration deadline: June 7, 2014
Registration deadline: June 15, 2014
Conference dates: August 11-16, 2014 (tentative dates)
******************************************
Scope
-------
The Extreme Conference on Communication and Computing (ExtremeCom) brings
together researchers and practitioners in areas related to communications in
rural, remote or other extreme environments, and computing in extreme
operating conditions such as extreme temperatures and energy constraints,
extreme quantities ("big data"), extremely large-scale systems, and extreme
levels of threat and uncertainty, in order to gain experience and insight
into the challenges that such environments pose for the network and the
users.
We welcome a broad range of topics concerning both technical and economical
aspects, for example wireless communication, mobile computing, low power
devices and protocols, delay tolerant networks and other networking
paradigms, distributed computing paradigms, big data, distributed systems,
cloud computing, business and services models, user experiences and web
applications. Researches addressing computing challenges in general mobile
environments (even not completely extreme) are also welcomed by the
conference.
Following on from the success of ExtremeCom 2009 - The Midnight Sun
Expedition in Laponia, Sweden, ExtremeCom 2010 - The Himalayan Expedition in
Dharamsala, India, ExtremeCom 2011 - The Amazon Expedition in Manaus,
Brazil, ExtremeCom 2012 - The Swiss Alps Winter Expedition in Zurich,
Switzerland, and ExtremeCom 2013 - The Volcanic Expedition in the
Eyjafjallajökull Volcano region in Iceland, we present the ExtremeCom 2014
edition: The Galápagos Expedition. The conference will start with 3 days of
excursions in the amazing nature of the Galápagos Islands. Along the way,
participants will get to see and experience the islands and their plant and
animal life, both above and beneath the surface of the ocean. The immersion
will not only give a better idea of both the technical and user requirements
of such a harsh environment, but it will also give many opportunities for
informal research discussions between the participants. Participants that
have their own software for scenarios like this will also, to as great an
extent as possible, be encouraged to test and demonstrate it within this
environment. After the excursions, there will be two days of paper
presentations and demos. Focus will still be on informal research
discussions, with the hope that the field experience will give participants
the ability to discuss the topics in a new light.
*****************
Submission Guidelines
---------------------------
Participants should submit 6 page papers about ideas and visions about the
topics of the conference or demo proposals to be shown during the
conference. Visionary and thought-provoking papers that are likely to
generate much discussion during the conference are especially solicited. The
aim of the conference is to maintain an informal environment, where new
research ideas can be discussed and developed. We also hope to have a demo
session where participants can show their implementations and systems. If
you want to show a demo, please submit a 2 page demo proposal using the same
submission system as for conference papers. Accepted papers will be
published in the ACM Digital Library. A selected set of top submissions will
be fast-tracked to a special issue in a reputed SCI/E journal.
We only accept PDF files, no greater than 6 pages in length (2 pages for the
demos), including text, figures and references. Manuscripts should use the
ACM templates (for LaTeX, please use Option 2 files), with 9pt fonts.
Topics for the conference include, but are not limited to:
Testbeds for large-scale sustainable testing of moobile communication
systems
Real deployments of networks in extreme environments
Business and service models for networks in rural, remote, and other
challenging environments
Delay tolerant networking

Wi-UAV 2014
5th Int. IEEE Workshop on Wireless Networking and Control for Unmanned
Autonomous Vehicles in conjunction with IEEE GLOBECOM 2014
Austin, Texas, USA
WORKSHOP DATE: DECEMBER 12, 2014
PAPER SUBMISSION DEADLINE: JULY 15, 2014
WEBSITE: www.wi-uav.org
The 5th International IEEE workshop on Wireless Networking and Control
for Unmanned Autonomous Vehicles (Wi-UAV 2014, www.wi-uav.org),
co-located with the IEEE International Conference on Global
Communications (GLOBECOM 2014), will be held in Austin, Texas, USA on
December 12, 2014. The workshop is the interdisciplinary platform to
bring together robotics and communications.
You are kindly invited to submit your research paper to this workshop
and discuss current innovative technological advances in the area of
networking and control solutions for unmanned autonomous systems.
The deadline for submission via the EDAS system is: July 15, 2014.
Aims and Scope:
Unmanned autonomous systems are increasingly used in a large number of
contexts to support humans in dangerous and difficult-to-reach
environments: e.g. aerial sensor systems, ground-based robotics, space
and underwater applications. In order to fulfill particularly
challenging tasks, visionary scenarios foresee unmanned vehicles to be
organized in networked teams and even swarms. The corresponding wireless
networks need to provide highly reliable and delay-tolerant control
links for the behavior management of the unmanned vehicles as well as
data links to transfer telemetry and sensor data. At the same time,
unmanned vehicles offer the capability to provide ad-hoc wireless
networks, for example to facilitate temporary hot spots and compensate
network outages in case of public events and emergencies.
This fifth edition of the workshop aims to discuss most recent results
of various international research projects on new communications
networks enabling the efficient control of teams of unmanned
vehicles/systems operating on the ground, in the air, underwater and in
space scenarios. Contributions addressing heterogeneous scenarios, e.g.
combination of aerial and underwater devices are highly welcome.
Topics:
- Communication architectures and protocols for unmanned autonomous
vehicles communication in challenging environments: air, underwater,
etc., indoor/outdoor
- Ad-hoc networking, routing, handover and meshing * Cooperation of
ground, aerial and maritime unmanned vehicles
- Localization and vision based sense-and-avoid * Interfaces and cross
platform communication
- Agent based mobility, multi-platform control, cognitive capabilities
and swarming
- Communication and system design
- Mini / Micro UAVs and enhanced Health Management
- Use of civilian networks for UVs communication
- Mission control centers and backend communication
- Advances in remote sensing: miniaturization, low-weight and energy
efficient communication
- QoS mechanisms and performance evaluation
- Advances in antenna design and MIMO systems
- Interworking with satellites and terrestrial communication
- Air traffic control and spectrum regulation
- Results from prototypes, test-beds and demonstrations
Key Note
The Wi-UAV has a tradition of distinguished key note speakers (see
www.wi-uav-org). We are proud that this year Prof. Gregory Huff,
Electromagnetics and Microwave Laboratory, Texas A&M University, has
agreed to give a keynote talk on innovative, reconfigurable antenna
designs for UAVs.
Best Student Paper Award (NEW!)
The best of all submitted student papers will be distinguished with a
Best Student Paper Award.
Submission Guidelines and Publication:
GLOBECOM workshops accept only original, previously unpublished papers.
Concurrent submission to GLOBECOM and other conferences or journals is
not allowed. Prospective authors are encouraged to submit papers in IEEE
conference style up to 6 pages through EDAS submission system
(http://edas.info/N17567), but one additional page is allowed with
additional publication fee.
Accepted papers will be published in the IEEE digital library (IEEE
Xplore). An accepted paper must be registered before the registration
deadline. An accepted paper should be presented at the workshop. Failure
to register before the deadline will result in automatic withdrawal of
the paper from the workshop proceedings and the program. GLOBECOM will
remove an accepted and registered but not presented paper from the IEEE
digital library.
Attendance Fee
Registration for this year's GLOBECOM workshops is $250, valid for any
other IEEE GC'14 workshops that day.
