Its ability to address complex, large-scale problems with robust, adaptable, and efficient solutions results from many years of selection, genetic drift and mutations. Thus, it is not surprising that inventors and researchers often look to natural systems for inspiration and methods for solving problems in human-created artificial environments. This has resulted in the development of evolutionary algorithms including genetic algorithms and swarm algorithms, and of classifier and pattern-detection algorithms, such as neural networks, for solving hard computational problems. A natural evolutionary driver is to survive long enough to create a next-generation of descendants and ensure their survival. One factor in survival is an organism's ability to defend against attackers, both predators and parasites, and against rapid changes in environmental conditions. Analogously, networks and communications systems use cyber security to defend their assets against cyber criminals, hostile organizations, hackers, activists, and sudden changes in the network environment (e.g., DDoS attacks). Many of the defense methods used by natural organisms may be mapped to cyber space to implement effective cyber security. Some examples include immune systems, invader detection, friend vs. foe, camouflage, mimicry, evasion, etc. Many cyber security technologies and systems in common use today have their roots in bio-inspired methods, including anti-virus, intrusion detection, threat behavior analysis, attribution, honeypots, counterattack, and the like. As the threats evolve to evade current cyber security technologies, similarly the bio-inspired security and defense technologies evolve to counter the threat. The goal of this feature topic is twofold: (1) to survey the current academic and industry research in bio-inspired cyber security for communications and networking, so that the ComSoc community can understand the current evolutionary state of cyber threats, defenses, and intelligence, and can plan for future transitions of the research into practical implementations; and (2) to survey current academic and industry system projects, prototypes, and deployed products and services (including threat intelligence services) that implement the next generation of bio-inspired methods. Please note that we recognize that in some cases, details may be limited or obscured for security reasons. The competition is for novel and innovative mobile applications utilizing any computing architecture (stand-alone, client/server, client/proxy/server, peer-to-peer/ad-hoc, cloud/mobile, others). It is intended as a platform-neutral Contest. Applications can be developed for, but not limited to, Android, iOS, Windows Phone, Blackberry OS 10 and HTML5. The competition consists of three phases. Only Finalists advance to enter the third and last phase of selecting the three top winners. These types of networks consist of a number of autonomous or semi-autonomous wireless nodes/objects moving with diverse patterns and speeds while communicating via several radio interfaces simultaneously. Examples of such objects include smartphones and other user mobile devices, robots, cars, unmanned aerial vehicles, sensors, actuators, etc., which are connected in some way to each other and to the Internet. With every object acting as a networking node generating, relaying and/or absorbing data, these networks may serve as a supplementary infrastructure for the provision of smart, ubiquitous, highly contextualized and customized services and applications available anytime-anywhere-anyhow. Achieving this will require global interworking and interoperability amongst objects, which is not typical today. To overcome current shortcomings, a number of research challenges have to be addressed in this area, ranging from initial conceptualization and modelling, to protocols and architectures engineering, and development of suitable tools, applications and services, and to the elaboration of realistic use-case scenarios by taking into account also corresponding societal and economical aspects. The goal of this special issue is to bring together the state-of-the-art research contribution that describes original and unpublished work addressing the wireless communications and networking issues to support moving objects. Potential topics include, but are not limited to: Topics of interest include but are not limited to the following: WiNeMO Techno-Business Models WiNeMO Performance Modeling and Evaluation Protocols and Architectures for Moving Objects M2M Aspects of WiNeMO Synergy and Cooperation in Heterogeneous Networks WiNeMO Security Issues Applications and Services for Moving Objects WiNeMO Testbeds, Prototypes, and Practical Systems WiNeMO Case Studies Societal and Economical Aspects of WiNeMO Submission Details All received submissions will be sent out for peer review by three experts in the field and be evaluated with respect to the relevance to this special issue, level of innovation, depth of contribution, and quality of presentation. The Guest Editors will make an initial determination of the suitability and scope for all submissions. Papers that either lack originality or clarity in presentation will not be sent for review and the authors will be promptly informed in such cases. Submitted papers must not be under consideration by other journals, publications or conferences. The submission must be clearly written and in excellent English, with a maximum page limit of 20 pages. Furthermore, social systems are evolving with cyber systems and physical systems along with the popularity of online social networking. With the advent of ubiquitous sensing and networking, future social networks turn into cyber-physical interactions, which are attached with associated social attributes. The emergence of the cyber-physical-social computing will significantly change the way we see the world. In the mean time, the convergence of the physical, cyber, and social spaces will exhibit a variety of complicated characteristics, which brings more open issues and challenges for research communities. Scope and Topics A. Networks and Networked Systems where intelligent entities exchange information to achieve improved overall performance for both cyber and physical components. Particular areas of interests include: ? sensor, vehicular, robot, camera, aerial and social smartphone networks ? wireless networking technologies and autonomous ad hoc networks ? internet of things and machine-to-machine communications ? networked infrastructure management with applications such as smart power grids and transportation systems ? network enabled computation, coordination, and actuation ? scalability of complex networks B. Modelling and Control where mathematical and computational methods are developed and applied to facilitate innovative design, in-depth analysis, and novel insights of the fundamental principles. Particular areas of interests include: ? control theory with a clear cyber-physical tone such as networked control, distributed optimization, and distributed learning ? autonomy with applications in mobile sensor networks, internet connected cars, etc. ? modelling of tightly integrated physical processes, software, computation platforms, and networks C. Data Management where novel methods are developed to reliably gather, store, transfer, and analyse large amount of data and dataflow. Particular areas of interests include: ? data management and processing (e.g. big data, cloud computing) ? location and tracking based services ? smart cameras and computer vision based context management ? web of things. D. Software and Hardware where novel designs and implementations of test-beds, platforms, and software will significantly improve the speed, efficiency, and reliability of next generation CPS. Particular areas of interests include: ? embedded systems applications (pervasive computing, real-time control technologies) ? resource-constrained systems (low power, energizing, device miniaturization) ? standards and middleware. E. Other Emerging Areas where new challenges, new ideas, and new principles are shaping. Submission Guidelines Submissions must include an abstract, keywords, the e-mail address of the corresponding author and should not exceed 8 pages for main conference, including tables and figures in IEEE CS format. A rich algorithm and protocol ecosystem has emerged too, enabling various applications with very different requirements. At the same time, real deployments of wireless sensor networks still prove to be cumbersome and not sufficiently automated. Even the best known and used algorithms and protocols need to be carefully manually tuned, in order to adapt to the environment and the application. Recently other sensing networks and applications have emerged, such as mobile sensing, crowd sensing, smartphone sensing, cyber physical systems, the Internet of Things, etc. Even if their concepts and approaches differ from each other, the real-world problems apply similarly and even extend to challenges like keeping up the interest of human users, enabling privacy and security, etc. Thus, this issue of RealWSN will extend its focus to include all relevant sensing applications. The purpose of RealWSN is to bring together researchers and practitioners working in the area of sensor networks, with focus on real-world experiments or deployments of wireless sensor networks. Researchers and practitioners are invited to submit original contributions which aim to tackle the problem of development and deployment of sensing applications in the real world. ================== Workshop Scope: ================== The targeted topics of the workshop include, but are not limited to: - Experiences from real-world sensing application deployments - Software tools for characterisation, parametrisation and automatisation of sensing applications - Datasets gathered from real sensing applications - Negative results and unsuccessful deployments - Works in progress and not yet solved issues - Management of faulty and malicious data in the real world Sensing applications include, but are not limited to: - Wireless sensor and actuator networks - Mobile sensing, smartphone sensing - Crowd sensing - Cyber physical systems - Internet of Things ================== Submission Guidelines: ================== Short papers (max 4 pages) together with all relevant documentation (source code, trace files, etc.) should be submitted by July 26th, 2015.
