AIMS AND SCOPE
----------------------------
The main goals of a smart-city are to improve sustainability and livability,
to ease city government and organization, and to increase services to the
citizens. The primary role of ICT in enabling this vision is to keep the
decision makers, the stake holders and the citizen constantly updated with
fresh information collected around the city. To accomplish this task, next
generation cities, will be populated with billions of heterogeneous devices
ranging from tiny communicating objects (e.g., actuators, sensors, tags)
able to interact with the surrounding environment and remote systems, to
high-end nodes (e.g., data centers, workstations) capable of complex
operations and to process a huge amount of information.
In this futuristic scenario a very special role is played by citizens with
their smartphones, tablets and portable devices. They are constantly
connected with whatever surroundings them and they are formidable
information consumers. Their role however does not end here. Smartphones, in
fact, are very powerful devices with constantly increasing processing,
communication and sensing capabilities and very recently, a large plethora
of proposals have emerged to leverage those capabilities to contribute to
the information production process. For instance, citizens roaming around
the city may be considered as mobile probes which, by making uses of cyber
and physical data accessible by smartphones, can analyze the situation and
produce reports to the community. Furthermore smarthphones can actively
contributing in creating the communication infrastructure by forwarding data
coming from surrounding devices.
All in all, cities are going to became a new complex ecosystem which has the
potentiality to offer many amazing feature and support innovative
application. Unfortunately, fully exploiting, managing and accessing that
ecosystem are still far to be fully viable and their fulfillment surely
poses a formidable challenge.
This Special Issue aims to solicit contributions on novel algorithms,
methodological studies and experimentation on how to address the formerly
highlighted issues. Specifically on how devise a city-wide networking
infrastructure capable to efficiently guarantee communication in the new
envisaged ecosystem, to manage the complexity of heterogeneous devices and
access technologies, and to guarantee robust, ubiquitous, and secure
connectivity over the urban environments. At the same time, beside studying
the issues of the city-wide infrastructure deployment, the workshop aims to
investigate the potential provided by the end-users devices (e.g.
smartphones, tablets) when augmented in order to turn them into active
components of the smart-city ecosystem, instead of mere connection
end-points. Such a potential includes the possibility to extend the network
access in a pervasive way, to provide ubiquitous computing services, and to
favor the emergence of "collective intelligence behaviors" through
collaboration and direct communication among devices.
In lines with such objectives, the topics of interests include -but it is
not limited to- the following issues:
. Models of network components' interactions on a smart-city
. Novel communication protocols for M2M Communications;
. Device-2-Device Communications (D2D);
. IoT architectures and middlewares;
. Self-organizing wireless networks for pervasive urban access;
. Network virtualization for heterogeneous wireless networks;
. Systems for distributed Sensing and Control in Smart Cities;
. Smartphone-based sensing systems, tools, applications in Smart
City environments
. Crowd sourcing in smart cities;
. Dynamic trust management models for Smartphone based networks and
applications;
. Cooperation incentive models for Smartphone based networks and
applications;
. Reliability, Security, Privacy and Trust in smart cities
ecosystems;
. Business model to promote users collaboration and resources
sharing in smart cities ecosystems;
. Testbed on the feasibility of Smartphone based networks and
interaction with Cyber physical Systems;
. Applications, Business, Standards, and Social Issue;
. Security models to promote Smartphone collaboration and resources
sharing;
. Cooperative systems of Smart Objects supporting Wireless Networks

CCIoT 2016: IEEE Consumer Communications & Networking Conference (CCNC)
Special Session on Content Centric Internet of Things (CCIoT)
Held in conjunction with the International Consumer Electronics Show, Las
Vegas, NV, USA
January 09-12, 2016
*CALL FOR PAPERS*
Content-Centric Networking (CCN) and Named Data Networking (NDN) have
recently emerged as a promising Future Internet architecture that aims to
cope with the increasing demand for highly scalable and efficient
information dissemination. Moving away from the Internet's legacy
host-to-host communication model, CCN/NDN promises a new host-to-data
communication model, by leveraging named data, name-based routing and
in-network storage for caching. At the same time, the rise of the Internet
of Things (IoT), with its rich set of challenges and requirements placed
upon the current Internet, provide an interesting ground for showcasing the
contribution and performance of CCN mechanisms.
This special session calls for recent research, practical experiences, and
development lessons on the intersection of the paradigms of CCN and IoT.
The objective is to promote the integration of Content Centric Networking
and Internet of Things by addressing the unique problems in IoT, such as
mobility, interference of wireless channel, limitation of storage and
battery, security and privacy. Novel applications, practical experience and
solutions on deploying CCN over IoT are also welcome.
The Special Session on Content Centric Internet of Things (CCIoT) seeks
original contributions in the following topical areas, plus others that are
not explicitly listed but are closely related:
* Content-centric network architecture for IoT
* RFID-based naming strategy
* Information publish/subscribe mechanism for data collection
* Routing in wireless CCN
* Resource management such as power, computing, storage, bandwidth, and
user interface
* Context-aware networking for smart home, health care, transportation, etc.
* Novel application, prototype or solution in consumer networks with CCN
* Security, privacy, and trust in CCN over IoT
* Contextual communication in IoT applications

--------------------------------------------------------------------
In recent years, the world of high-end parallel and distributed computing
systems and applications (in their continuous evolving declinations in
the form of high-performance computing, grid computing and cloud) is
generally paying increasing attention to the problems related to quality
of service, determination of the temporal behavior and response of the
proposed software platform solutions, interactivity, and performance of
the communication tools. In the modern computation centers, traditional
distributed applications may coexist with others that become more and
more time-sensitive (cross-border surveillance and object tracking, net
gaming, remote video streaming, etc.), and this tends to happen in a
virtualized infrastructure.
The design of distributed reliable systems must take into account the
selection and evaluation of interaction models, software technology choices,
temporal behaviour, resource efficiency, performance, scalability, and
coordination.
In addition, this track calls for dynamic middleware solutions capable of
taking context-aware resource management decisions in order to enforce the
most appropriate quality levels depending on application SLAs and overall
(possibly clustered) visibility of resource status. These solutions are
particularly challenging when dealing with large-scale open deployment
environments and their associated scalability issues. Novel and relevant
application domains push for evolution and disruptive research in this
field;
only to mention a few, middleware solutions for datacenter resource
management
optimization for quality-aware online stream processing of big data flows,
energy-aware middleware for resource management in smart city/smart grid
deployment environments, middleware for cloud-hosted cyber-physical systems
with strict requirements on latency and reliability.
Topics include (but are not limited to) the challenging issues in the design
of reliable and resource efficient middleware:
-Reliable and time-sensitive distribution models
-Performance of distributed applications
-Cloud computing advances for cyber-physical systems and mobile cloud
computing.
-Middleware for the efficient integration of cyber-physical systems and
the cloud
-Reactive stream processing and on line processing of big data flows
-Efficient integration with the run-time support: operating systems and
virtualization technology
-QoS-aware middleware for datacenter resource management
-Interaction models (e.g., publish-subscribe or event-based).
-Programming models and languages
-Efficient and context-aware server-side management of smart city data
-Scalability in city-wide deployment scenarios

====================================================================================
CALL FOR PAPERS
2nd International Conference on Safety and Security in Internet of
Things (SaSeIoT 2015)
http://securityiot.eu/2015/show/home
26-27 October, 2015 – Rome, Italy
====================================================================================
SCOPE
The infrastructure of large cities is becoming increasingly vulnerable
to natural and man-made disasters.
Complex Information Communication Technology (ICT) infrastructures,
critical dependencies and unforeseen
cascading effects can worsen single hazard events to a threatening
crisis of several entire infrastructures.
With the dense population in urban areas along with the critical
dependency on infrastructures, such crises become
a serious threat to the safety and security of citizens and industries.
When the "unforeseen" happens, public
security comes to its limits Whether cyber, natural or industrial
disasters - effective risk management
must be a continuous process that recognizes new threats and
opportunities, in particular in relation to
new technological evolutions.
Internet of Things (IoT) will have an enormous impact on our future
infrastructures. In the context of
safety and security this is at the same time a challenge (How can we
design secure
and resilient IoT infrastructures?) and an opportunity (How can we use
IoT for better safety and security?).
In particular in urban environments, the increasing deployments of IoT
technologies and the rapid proliferation
of sensored and automated cities are opening up new avenues of threats
and opportunities toward
public safety and security. Although we have seen various deployments of
diverse IoT
systems, our understanding of these systems and their implications in
the context of safety
and security has just scratched the surface. The Second International
Conference on Safety and
Security with IoT (SaSeIoT 2015) aims to explore these dynamics within
the scope of IoT
in the context of Safety and Security. The conference solicits original
and inspiring research
contributions from technology experts, researchers, designers,
practitioners in academia, authorities
and industry, and promises to offer a highly interactive forum to share
knowledge, experiences, and best practices
primarily in the following main application oriented themes:

IEEE Computer
Special Issue on “Communications and Privacy under Surveillance”
Full paper submission deadline: 1 August 2015
Publication date: March 2016
Computer plans a March 2016 special issue on communications and privacy
under surveillance.
Today, our daily communications are subject to surveillance by
government agencies and private hackers. The purpose could be legal
crime investigation or terrorism prevention, or it could be illegal
privacy infringement or theft of confidential information. There are
often gray areas between legal and illegal surveillance.
Despite the controversy, communications-surveillance technologies
continue to evolve. However, these sensitive technologies have seldom
been reported in the scientific literature, as developers have largely
subscribed to the idea of “security by obscurity.” Now, though, many
realize that surveillance technologies could be improved much faster via
“security by clarity,” with the technologies examined by both good and
bad guys. This could also reduce the gray area between legal and illegal
activities, thereby protecting privacy.
This special issue will foster dissemination of the latest
communications and privacy surveillance methodologies. The guest
editors’ aim is to publish high-quality articles presenting the state of
the art in lawful, mass, wireless, and backdoor surveillance.
Appropriate topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
a.. Lawful surveillance with RFC 3924
b.. Mass and global surveillance programs such as Five Eyes, PRISM,
XKeyscore, Tempora, Muscular, and Royal Concierge
c.. Wireless surveillance via 4G/3G/GSM, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth with
IMSI Catcher, Femtocatch, and Bluejacking
d.. Backdoor surveillance by malware on servers, desktops, laptops,
smartphones, and tablets via server and browser exploits, repackaged
applications, repackaged documents, and advanced persistent threats
e.. Surveillance and analysis tools such as Boundless Informant,
XKeyscore, Tempora, Tracfin, Visitor Location Registers, A5/1, and Tor
f.. Big data analysis on communications-surveillance data, metadata,
and multimedia
g.. Security and privacy by obscurity vs. security and privacy by clarity
h.. Analytical and simulation models of communications and privacy
surveillance
i.. Network and traffic forensics for surveillance
j.. Censorship analysis, detection, and circumvention
k.. Policies and regulations regarding legal and illegal surveillance
l.. Experimental studies of and testbeds for communications and
privacy surveillance
Only submissions that describe previously unpublished, original,
state-of-the-art research that are not currently under review by a
conference or journal will be considered.
Articles should be understandable by a broad audience of computing
science and engineering professionals, avoiding a focus on theory,
mathematics, jargon, and abstract concepts. All manuscripts are subject
to peer review on both technical merit and relevance to Computer’s
readership. Accepted papers will be professionally edited for content
and style.

Workshop on CellulAR Traffic Offloading to Opportunistic Networks (CARTOON)
Dallas, USA
October 19, 2015
Co-located with the 12th IEEE International Conference on Mobile Ad Hoc
and Sensor Systems (MASS) 2015
http://www.ene.unb.br/cartoon/
================================================================================
Scope:
The emergence of powerful handheld devices — coupled with the
proliferation of cloud-based applications and an ever-increasing
dominance of multimedia content in today’s Internet traffic — have
ignited an unprecedented growth of mobile data traffic in recent years.
Such a fact has posed significant challenges to mobile network
operators, who are now pressed to maintain satisfactory quality of
service under exponential traffic demands. To complicate matters, it has
also become apparent that traditional approaches to expand network
capacity may not suffice (e.g., new spectrum licenses and/or technology
upgrades), and they can soon be outpaced by aforementioned traffic
growth. Because of that, new ideas to cope with the so-called “data
crunch problem” have been sought, and mobile data offloading has
appeared as one of the most promising solutions: the routing of
macrocellular traffic through alternative networks. Although mobile data
offloading is generally th!
ought in terms of WiFi hotspots or femtocell networks, recent
developments in the arena of Opportunistic Networks — one of the most
interesting evolutions of traditional mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) —
have paved the way for researchers from both cellular and MANET
backgrounds to work together in the development of new network
paradigms, architectures, and techniques that can leverage the
potentials of both “worlds” to promote and enhance mobile data
offloading. Motivated by this vision, we invite researchers, engineers,
and practitioners from academia, industry, and the public sector to
submit original contributions to the Workshop on CellulAR Traffic
Offloading to Opportunistic Networks (CARTOON) 2015 in any of the
following topics (but not limited to):
+ WiFi offloading
+ Hybrid operation in licensed / unlicensed spectrum
+ Authorized Shared Access / Licensed Shared Access
+ Incentive mechanisms for offloading to opportunistic networks
+ New architectures and paradigms for offloading using opportunistic
networks
+ PHY and MAC-layer issues
+ Routing protocols for data offloading through opportunistic networks
+ Resource allocation and management
+ Game-theoretical studies for mobile data offloading
+ Multi-radio access technologies (RAT) co-existence and support for
data offloading
+ Content and data dissemination, replication, and caching strategies
+ Mobility models
+ Data flow management and load balance
+ Machine-to-machine support in opportunistic networks
+ Internet of Things in opportunistic networks
+ Cooperative and non-cooperative approaches for mobile data offloading
+ Backhaul support for mobile data offloading with opportunistic networking
+ Network measurements and testbeds
+ Capacity sharing strategies
+ Traffic engineering and quality of service for mobile data offloading
+ Dynamic spectrum sharing and access for data offloading to
opportunistic networks
+ Performance evaluation, simulation studies
+ Capacity studies and analytical modeling
